I used to live in the U district and I puzzled over that too. In Seattle, avenues run north-south and streets run east-west, so I wonder if it was known as "the avenue" in the generic, like "the big north-south road" before it was formally named.

@@LivingInSeattlePNW This can actually be really important. I was stopped by a woman downtown once who was frantically looking to find the Metro Theater. Never mind that the University downtown is Street, she thought it was Avenue, and had no clue that the Ave, was actually Way. Let's not even get started on the clusterf*ck that are the Light Rail stops. I mean I know the why of the names, but honestly, couldn't they have renamed the downtown stop? Also, I'll love you forever for stanning for Capitol Hill. I only started hearing that other one a few years ago, and it makes me unreasonably angry. I'll correct anyone I hear using that one.

Also as someone who has flown out of Sea-Tac, spent plenty of time on the Ave and visited U-Dub most of these expressions are familiar. The ony one I didn't know was about Capital Hill. I had heard a few locals refer to it as Cap Hill so just thought it was the norm. Looking forward to visiting soon to have my special at Dick's, check out The Market and ride over to Bremerton and hope the mountain is out.

I would say the Native American names are something to brush up on. Issaquah, Snohomish, Tulalip, Puyallup (home of the State Fair) just to name a few. If you have those down, you've really got the local lingo managed! Nice video. Keep 'em coming! I've lived in the state all my life. Graduated from Selah High in E. Washington. Went to Green River Community College in Auburn, and then graduated from Eastern Washington University before moving to the Seattle area permanently. Have lived in Bellevue for 25 years. Oh you could do a Seattle v. Eastside (Bellevue, Redmond, Issaquah, Sammamish) thing too if you wanted. :)

Most of this is spot on for me. I'm fourth gen Seattle. Some things that I caught on though -- I've said The 5 before. But 99% of the time, just I-5. I also go by Exit numbers, but I grew up in Ballard, so I wasn't taking the freeway anywhere inside Seattle unless I was going south of downtown. It wasn't a regular path for me to be on I-5 to take downtown exits (or Northgate or anything in between) I've also said Cap Hill, but more as a joke.

California local who lived in Tacoma for 20 years. Nobody in California says “The I-5.” In California it’s “the 5,” in the PNW it’s 5 or I-5. Sticking the “I” in makes it sound like you’re trying and failing to be both at once. I’m pro both places, CA & WA have a lot in common. They’re also great places to live. And I agree with other comments, people moving there need to know how to pronounce local towns like Puyallup or Sequim.

I moved to Seattle in 1990, and I think you got it pretty good. One minor error, The 'Ave' is University Way NE, and is not actually an avenue. This puzzled me a little bit when I came here. One thing that a native said that proved I was a transplant, was when there was a really nice weather Saturday, he knew I would be home, as any other native on a sunny Saturday would already be out enjoying the day before 10 AM. He needed help moving his boat. It was a nice day to go sailing.

These are spot on. A few I'd add: - The International District is just called Chinatown. 'The ID' is newer slang similar to Cap Hill, Chinatown is how it's known to longtime locals. - Bus routes are generally referred to in "the" form. Example: "I hopped on the 36 and got off in Chinatown." - The Central District is - The CD. "Can you pick me up in the CD?" - The Locks, Fremont Cut, Montlake Cut - Regional portions of the ship canal that connects the Lake Washington to The Puget Sound. - Puget Sound is just - The Sound. - Northend generally refers to the region of Greater Seattle Area North of the Ship Canal Bridge / Green Lake. - Southend generally refers to the region of Greater Seattle Area South of I-90 / Beacon Hill. (These North/South boundaries are often in dispute amongst locals.) - King County Airport is just Boeing Field. - South Lake Union Streetcar was coined the S.L.U.T. (South Lake Union Trolley) by locals. - The Space Needle can just be referred to as - The Needle. - You can gauge how long someone's lived in the area if they've ever attended an event at The Kingdome or Key Arena.

Skagit County is probably the best county in the state imo. This cracks me up. Lived in Olympia for 6 years and drive to Tacoma everyday. I all say i5 north or south. I ONLY use the exit numbers. Makes little sense to call it by the street near it. Only go to Seattle for Showbox. Not worth it otherwise. It also doesn't take 90 minutes. Either 3 hours during peak traffic or 60 minutes. No one goes speed limit and the cops don't care here. You must hate me too. I say pikes and it also a tourist trap. No one really shops here. Now you might wonder where I'm originally from. NY. We the people don't give a $ht what you think of me. I'll call stuff whatever and it doesn't keep me up at night :)

This was so weird to watch. Born and raised in Seattle, specifically West Seattle. But I don't recognize your accent. You don't sound local, unless maybe Everett? But ya, Cap Hill, has been Cap Hill, my whole life. And calling it Pikes, is fine, we used those terms out at Alki lumber for deliveries for generation, since before there was a five or a cap hill. I have never heard anyone call it U whatever that shopping market is, but its new and in a rich part of town that I didn't have the right brand of car to visit. Also, I have never heard anyone say, "the Mountain is out." If I ever heard someone say that, I think I would instantly suspect them to be new. Are you telling people to say this so they "self-report?" Kinda evil really... very Seattle of you with your mysterious foreign accent. 🤣😆 (fun video though)

I was also born in raised in Seattle proper in the Maple Leaf neighborhood. Both of my parents were born in Seattle proper. And my grandparents moved to Seattle in the 40’s and 50’s. My father’s family are original PNW pioneers, so my family has deep roots in Seattle and the PNW. Not sure about my accent, maybe it’s from Seattle Public Schools. U Village was remodeled maybe 20 to 25 years ago, but has been in existence since 1956, even before the freeway. No special car is required for U Village and they even have tons of parking and one of the best liquor stores in town. I encourage you to ask people “what people say on a clear day when you can see Rainier” I’ve tested it and a majority will say “the mountain is out” it’s one of those weird things Thanks for watching
@TravisWebb
@TravisWebb 4 күн бұрын
@@LivingInSeattlePNW I dunno man, Maple leaf being “proper” Seattle. I mean, anything outside of West Seattle isn’t “real” Seattle. I guess, your accent could be a Nathan Hale Posh Northerner accent with its poshness. That would explain you knowing so much about the U-village. Which, I pretty sure you gotta drive a fancy European car to even get in that lot. I am not going to ask anyone about the mountain man, that’s embarrassing, and l if you tested it, you should have asked if they moved here from California in the 90’s and if they dial six or ten digits when they call locals. Cause it sounds like sneaky Cali talk. ;) Honestly it was a nice to watch after being away from home for a year near, and… to tug your chain a bit. Great production, good work. Hope you enjoy the perfect weather and have a great day.

My friend (who lived in Yesler Terrace) asked me what I thought they should rename it, I told her, "Skid Road." And that they should put a huge statue of Henery Yesler in the park. My friend appreciated my sense of humor. I am told SHA didn't.

The official address of the Market is “85 Pike Street” The market runs on both Pike Street and Pike Place When it 1st opened in 1907, the records show that it was on Pike Place which intersects with Pike Street west of 1st Ave. The point is that it’s named after the Street, not a person, even though John Pike was a person and the architect of the original University of Washington which sat approximately where the Olympic Hotel is now located. Pike street was also part of the original downtown platting and part of the “Jesus Christ Made Seattle Under Protest” mnemonic. Thanks for watching !!
