Well done Flo, I enjoyed this video with a feeling of nostalgia. When I was building my mum's house, I used the exact same tiles design like yours. Your tiles are absolutely beautiful aunt Flo, and you have eyes for quality, how do you even know how to detect these mistakes?
@FloFinance3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. For mistakes: at this stage they are mostly aesthetics and boils down to "beauty being in the eyes of the beholder" and you don't learn that one anywhere. The tile installation I was mad about, every other person did not understand why I had an issue with them. Meanwhile they are hideous to me. 😂 So bad I'm still considering taking them out at a huge cost. For technical mistakes, that one is based on experience. With over 10 years construction site experience, one can pick out these things instantly. At the foundation, blockwork, beams and pillars stages we had a certified civil engr do the job. He knows about the strength of the structure, agregate for the concrete mix, sizes of rods to use etc but I was still there making sure we get what we want in terms of the final look of the house.

They are all the same everywhere. If you are not there to supervise them, they will deliver the opposite and run mouth on top. If I did not return to site to check his work sorry would have been my name. Well done on the progress so far.
@FloFinance3 жыл бұрын
That running mouth on top is the most annoying part. You made a mistake, accept your mistake nowww. No. They will blame everyone and everything else but themselves and be telling you it's JUST a few materials that need to be replaced. Yes o, some steal materials but to not even fix it at all and be asking for money is the height of it. 😑 Thanks.
@ademolaabejoye61273 жыл бұрын
Kudos.... There's alot of "rookie mistakes" I see on your project. I wish I was involved with your project, I would have saved you from some of these, if not all. By the way, wooden internal doors remain better than all those metal "security doors" you have used. Information is power! I'm an architect and project manager with over 15yrs experience in Nigeria's building construction industry. I've learnt how to overcome some of these issues from our "crazy artisans"😁

Building anything encounters hidden and known challenges. What is important is to deliver the results or product at the right time. This is a reason why development don't take place either in families or at national level - workmanship.

For the tiles, they were being lazy. The tiles were continuous. I saw they told you when you bought them. All they had to do was to open each carton and sort true the tiles to find the continuation of each tiles, but they were too lazy to do it because it's a lot of work. I had my electrician, tile layers and painters repeat their works almost 3 times. I gave them detailed instructions and left, to then come back and find them doing the opposite. It cost me money and time, but it also cost them money and time as well, since I subtracted certain percentages from their payments each time they made mistakes after receiving instructions. Could you imagine that in one instance, my electrician scattered my lights everywhere telling me that it will look more beautiful that way lol. It was awful. This was after I gave him detailed instructions, wall markings and even my hand sketches on where each light should be put and the way it should be oriented in space. May be he thought I was stupid to buy those lights bearing in mind where to put each of them. Some of our people has a very serious problem following instructions or sticking to plans.
@FloFinance3 жыл бұрын
You are 100% correct. Sheer laziness! Before they started laying the tiles in the living room, they were still arguing that it is not continuous. I made them open about 10 boxes and they saw the pattern. Still. the laziness in their eyes was too much, I just left them alone with an agreement to at least make similar sides (dark and light) line up. There were 5 patterns and we would have needed to open up all the tiles and form 5 groups then start laying. You would have thought that once they saw the pattern they would be enthusiastic, for where? I am sure that as we were setting it, they were praying for it not to be continuous. 😂 I mean if I were a tiler, these are the things that will make my work more exciting, it will be like solving a puzzle and the feeling at the end of solving a giant puzzle of tiles must be euphoric and fulfilling, wouldn't it? But they prefer to miss out on that. They were lucky that I had the pain in my arm. There's no way I would have stood there for the duration of the work and watched them like a hawk. And guess what? When I told them oya, start laying, they wanted to lay the tiles across that rectangular space! And I was like what??? You looked at this long room and wanted to place the tiles horizantally? There's a pattern on the bathroom tiles and they could not even maintain it. You talk repeatedly to adults they keep making the same mistakes over and over again. You really can't teach people aesthetics. For that, the owner MUST be there to make sure it's done to his or her liking.
@esthershegs86113 жыл бұрын
You are right they have problem following instructions....when i was planning my wedding then i wanted something unique so i told the guy the colour of the wool to knight and design.....what he did was a total change of what i gave him with no similarities..he said his own design is better than the one i gave him....

@@FloFinance Everything na wahala for Nigeria. I found out from experience that the only way to ensure that things will be done the way you want it in Nigeria is either to do it yourself or to watch the people constantly as they are doing it. They forgot that if they had done it exactly the way you wanted it, you will always give them work whenever you have one and most importantly, you will recommend them to your friends, colleagues, and family members. If they keep doing each work to your satisfaction, at some point you will even stop caring too much about what they charge you since you know they will do a good job. That's how they miss out on opportunities. On Sunday now, you will see them in church asking God to open doors of opportunity for them. Meanwhile, God has been opening doors for them and they have been busy closing each and every door lol. Our people lack customer service mentality. All they know is what they can get today and don't care about tomorrow. I saw a lot lol. It got to a point that I couldn't tolerate it anymore and had to kick some of them out of the worksite and warned them never to set foot there again. You tell somebody you hired to do a job what you want him/her to do, and some of them will have the gut to tell you that the way you want it isn't good, that their own is better. When you insisted that it must be done your way, they will counter-insist that it must be done their way, in your own property oooh lol. I even asked one of them at some point whether he's the one who hired me to do a job or vice versa lol.

@@FloFinance I made the assumption because you said that you’re supervising the works yourself and I guessed your not been readily available on ground could stress you and cost you lost of time and materials. Ditto for the plumbing and sanitary ware positions. Well done on the works.
@FloFinance3 жыл бұрын
@@valerieadaezeonuh263 from the look of this building, we have long passed the stage when an architect and a civil engineer were here. We are in the "beauty" stage and I don’t see how anyone will know how I want my house to look, which tiles I want, what colour of paint I want more than I do. Even if I were not here, anybody I pay to stand in for ne will just act like an administrative assistant, passing every fitting and installation method through me for approval which just wastes everybody's time. But since I can be here, no need of a redundant middle man. We are done with the structure, we don't need an architect at this stage.

Imagine if I ask them to pay for the tiles of those two rooms that cost N6800 per 5 pieces? They can't. You won't even have the mind to tell them to pay. You took what Flo wrote about wooden doors literally. Google "who does that?" to understand what that expression means. The meaning is lost on you yet you are here being rude with your haba and madam.

Madam, the problem you’re facing right now is far more manageable than mine. Most of our local builders do not want to improve their skills even when you try to teach them, all you will hear is “ this is how others do theirs” or you hear “ its ok like this”. I have spent 30% more on amendments than what I was previously charged.

My brother, my brother! I'm so sorry to read about what you are going through. If I count the number of times I have heard those phrases you mentioned and resisted the urge to destroy someone's face eh? They will tell you "this is not obodo oyibo", "everybody I did it for this way loved it". To the last one I always tell them that I'm not everybody. They are so allergic to cute finishing. Not open to any improvement whatsoever. But once you see artisans that are open to improvements, their work stand out.

They're not professionals. As a Professional and license general contractor, it makes me a bit upset when people calls a few men that only knows the basis of construction or a trade pros. Unless a Professional in North America and Africa is not the same. You have a beautiful home but too many unqualified trades posing as contractors and engineers. The mistake I have seen have never happened on any of my job sit. That includes the home owners having to and supervise/ over look the work. It it an absolute insult to the real pro's. On the other hand, I understand that many owners choose to hire laborers and trades, to save cost. And end up in disastre

Oh my! I cannot believe how stupidly they laid your flooring!! Unbelievable! And they seemed to have no idea how to match light with light and dark with dark 🤦🏾♀️ And if you were not there they would have laid the whole house so! That was pre - amateur! Good luck with it all dear Flo, i hope they follow your wishes! I sign you with the sign of the cross! 😂 😁 but even I think you should get them to redo that room that they did so badly. I know that it will cost you but I’m sure that they can salvage some of these tiles and reuse them. The thing is as it is you will always see it and you would not be happy. It’s quite annoying. Please tell them to redo it. I know it’s a building site but they could be a bit more tidy too. However in the end i hope that you will have a lovely place. It would be good if somebody could go by to keep an eye on the building works. Good luck o 👍🏾

Just like us in the Pacific Islands.You will buy everything set for a complete house bt those people in the village will nt do things to your expectation at all.Nxt day they will call you bck and tell you they ran out of petrol or fuel for generator,bricks etc.As for my case we on an outter Atols which no electricity so we need generator inorder to use those electric machine etc.They will be telling you all sorts of stupid excuses.Even some are your close relatives.Its so frastrating.They think those of us who work and live in the cities are collecting money frm the trees.So rediculous

This is why I don’t hire people out of pity. First you must know the job or come highly recommended. Just being a relative will not qualify you for the job.

Can you put slide door on bathroom doors Same thing in Papua New Guinea The workmen do stuff to their own mind and don't standardize unless in city
@FloFinance3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can but you need to make provision for it right from when you are making the building plan. You need to make sure there's no obstruction such as shower trays/cubicles in the direction the door will slide.

@@FloFinance very true . . It's important to be present 3very day and plan before y o u get there But if you have a skilled carpenter they will put ranch or barn type slide door on outside of room . In hall way. That way only attachment is the runner above door frame When my cousin built her house back in her village she had some similar problem . And a,solution was to get a local carpenter to make barn door to her room that came off the hall and foyer Using pallets the supplies were packed on . Carpenter sanded back panels and use burn gun to bring out natural pattern in wood. Then seal with lacquer. The door looked amazing and is now a feature because it was different. Didn't look cheap . God bless your home and may you continue to rise up .

Yes, but that's the best place for us to position it. Anywhere further it means it will be under the carpark. But no worries, once it's well built and well covered, no pests or rodents will invade it.

Nothing makes me want to throw myself onto a cactus, like construction. Then I almost always have to use a firm hand - because when you smile, people think you're an idiot. I don't know why men who do construction treat women this way. I once lost it & there was never a follow-up incident. Had to bring out my "I'll put this English aside & show you that I'm mad" self. But well done. Being able to supervise the work (of adults who said they know how to do the work, no less!) means you'll get what you want in the end.
@FloFinance3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Any way they want it, I am equal to the task. All my life I've been working in male dominated environments so I know how to handle men that know nothing yet don't want to take "orders" from a b*tch. That's what they resort to calling women who won't cower at their resistance to doing the right thing. Such attitude always come from those who don't know their jobs. Everything becomes a fight as they try to go defensive because of their incompetence. It's challenging in employee environments but in this case? If you feel I'm bothering you too much, I pay you off and get another person. If we keep pampering incompetent people, we will never get skilled workers. We will keep trying new people till one day we meet someone that is ready and eager to deliver. ☺ Don't let them get to you.

Most building projects in Nigeria needs baby sitting supervision if not most times they do rubbish. Even most of the so called architects don't know any better, you begin to wonder at times if they saw the four corners of any university, based on the way they place the rooms.
@FloFinance3 жыл бұрын
😂😂😂 When I call some of them copy and paste architects they say I am mouthed. But this incompetence cuts across all fields.
