I discovered you a few days ago whilst looking for Bodhran lessons (thank you for those!). I since discovered this amazing documentary made by you too. The quality of this video is just incredible, it's better than a lot of stuff they put on telly! Great job! I'm going to watch the India episode next. I could honestly watch an entire series of you travelling the globe and spending time with drummers from all cultures. Thank you again.

Check out Mohamed Reza Mortezavi. He's a an excellent Iranian drummer who now lives in Berlin. His hands are exquisite in playing and his solo concerts are magical to behold. He's mostly known for daf and tonbak playing, but th eman could play anything with his hands, and his philosophy of music is so environmentally organic.

This documentary has offered me a beautiful glimpse into Persian culture which has always intrigued me. Always healing and expansive to move beyond the parameters of perception developed through media channels which focus on the political dynamics of a society.. Greetings from ancient Iran. it was a beautiful vlog about traditional drumming in Iran, I am a extreme metal drummer inside Iran and our music is more underground that no one can imagine how hard it is to dodge the misunderstandings and dangers we are facing here. all type of music old and new from traditional to jazz, rock, metal and etc. is practicing in Iran. also I am a hang drummer and have one and also had interest to bodhran many years ago but unfortunately could not have the pleasure to learn it. wish you luck for your future journies.

It is only because some Western country that elected a true fascist has decided that Iran is one of the Boogie Man enemies . The US always needs to have an enemy (Or two to three)to rally behind. this is a wonderful documentary. I just ordered a tombak, and was researching online for videos, and found this. Coincidentally, I also swing meels for exercise, and hadn't made the connection that these are used for that tradition. I can make my own music for it now! (well, or once my tombak arrives). I've also watched some of your bodhran videos, and am learning to play that also!

I'm sure you do understand the power of music & rhythm on the human body & soul.. (and they do too..) .Music unites people too.. No wonder music is restricted... Plato wrote: 'Music is medicine to the soul. justice is to the soul as health is to the body. Through music, the soul learns harmony and rhythm and even a disposition to justice.'. This is the quote I was looking for: “Let me make the songs of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws.” Andrew Fletcher

Thanks so much Dave for the kind words. I'm really sorry but I have no idea how to get a tonbak from Iran to NL - I got both my drums when I was there directly from makers. Maybe a great reason to book a flight once travel becomes safe in the future?!

Personally offended by advertising by Republican Party. But even You Tube has to make money so that’s how it goes. Thanks for this movie. I have had the pleasure of meeting a few Iranians. I myself am also a percussionist, doumbek, tar, riqq. Love this music!

So glad you enjoyed the film Kelly, and Thank you for taking the time to watch. KZbin ads are targeted on each individual so sadly I can’t control those. I visited the e-master music production website once during the summer, and every second add to this day is e-master ( !!!) it’s a strange world we are living in - be well and all the best to you. Excellent video! Enjoyed it very much. If I could change one thing about it would be how the narrator pronounces 'Iran', which is not quite correct. Iran should be pronounced as 'Iraan' or 'Irahn'. Same with 'Tehran', pronounced as 'Tehraan' or 'Tehrahn'. Great job on the video. Thank you.

An in-depth analysis; Tumbakh in Persian (or Tumbukin in Sanskrit) is an Aryan (Indo-European) word for drum. When Avestan and Sanskrit split from a parent proto-Aryan language in Central Asia and merged Indian subcontinent both these languages retained this word for drum. Kashmiri (A Daradic Aryan language) which is directly linked to the proto-Aryan language has a similar tradition referred to as Tumbaknare in Kashmir Valley: kzbin.info/www/bejne/novMoHiFrtl8hs0

Only missinformed people or people with no cultural interests of any kind would think that. Iran is one of the greatest cultural staples of the world. A bridge betweem the east and the west, a language that permits you travelling from Turkey to Taijikistan and wouldn't supriseeven to some western areas of China. I really admire lray and some day l will be able to go there.
