Princess Margaret, played by Helena Bonham Carter is incredible in this episode of The Crown...this scene in particular. Finding out about a lesser-known part of the royal family's history...and how also she felt she was treated by her family.

Well for starters the progressive views of the Prussian Royal Family were unusual for the time. People with disabilities were only seen as people with rights very recently. The way these family members were treated is not unusual for the time. Add to that, the British Royal Family were worried about the tenure of their position. Many royal families had fallen in recent times, including the Germans, and the Brits were doing everything to ensure they didn't go the same way. They had already had a family member abdicate. If they were seen as to be weak or defective- because people with disabilities were something of ridicule and a possible sign of defectiveness inthe bloodlines- it could harm the strength of their position even further.

Well my theory is that It might've had something to do with different levels of democracy in Prussia and the UK. Pre WWI Prussia was more absolute than 20th century UK and the royal family held a considerable amount of power and authority and was thus less dependent on public opinion. Post WWI UK was on the other hand a monarchy that tried to prevail during a time when monarchies around them were abolished. They had to come up with anreason for their existence andnthat reason was impersonating stability and the perfect family to set an example. As such "imperfections" were a threat tontheir existence. Prussia on the other hand had cencorship of media and the thought of republicanism was treasonous. To criticize the King for openly displaying a disabled member of the royal family would've been a no-go.

I think one of the most telling parts of all this is that when Nerissa died in 1986 only hospital staff were at the funeral and her grave stone was a simple plastic cross with a serial number and surname written on it until the story hit the news and blew up. Only then did Nerissa's nieces and nephews bother to buy an actual (though very simple and unadorned) headstone. The RF can claim ignorance or insist the 5 girls in the hospital were still loved and considered family but the facts speak for themselves.

Easily one the most satisfying scenes in the show, there towards the end. The Royal Family did not want anything disturbing the crown, their Royal image and their duties. Margaret was a good woman to call out the cruelty that that family displayed half the time. And to think her mother (who I’m sure in good will really had some somewhat understandable reasons for doing it, considering the times back then) was one to justify just about anything.

Not so fun fact: the Bowes Lyons, Queen Elizabeth’s maternal family, the Queen mother’s side of the family has a long history of genetic and physical disability most likely due to rampant inbreeding in order to maintain family wealth. In fact during the 19th century a child was born to the family which was said to be so deformed it was barely recognizable as a human. With flesh as smooth as porcelain and a head as round and bulbous as an egg. He was said to have died at birth as a stillborn but the midwife from the local village who was witness to the birth reporter that he was very much alive. Villagers at the time held the belief that the monster child survived and was locked away in the ancestral home of the Bowes Lyons, Glamis Castle. For years rumors circled about the true heir of Glamis castle and the title to the earldom of Strathmore. It is said that the egg man of Glamis was bricked into one of the rooms of the castle and was only allowed to interact with the guard in front of his room. The one window being his only connection to the outside world. The rumors were so prevalent they even reached the inner circle of Queen Victoria herself. Years after the heirs of the earl of Strathmore decided to see if the legends were true and tried to find the secret room. She had the house staff put up white cloth over every window in the castle to see if there was a room that was unseen from the inside. When all the clothes were put up, the countess noticed that there was one room with no cloth a room she had never seen before in one of the castles towers. She never was able to find the room and left it alone. Until years later when a surveyor and conservationist was looking at the house and found a secret room behind a brick wall, inside were a small cot, a chair, a small table, and a toilet more of a closet than a room. And considering the Bowes Lyon had a history of hiding afflicted members of their family maybe the legends just might be true.

Margaret had struggles with her mental health all her life, and I think she's a very conflicted character. She resents the Royal life, yet she was never able to give it up and holds on to the power and respect her position gives her. She falls in love with men below her "station" but then acts snobbishly towards Diana and Margaret Thatcher for not knowing the correct protocol. I think she shows a state of learned helplessness. Her heart knows that the system she's in is inherently toxic and cruel, and yet she doesn't believe she has the power to change it. She doesn't take her cousins in to her own home to look after them after this scene, noteably. She feels like her position as the Queens sister is the only thing that gives her worth, so despite hating it, she constantly bends to fit the role.

She was a product of her own upbringing and environment, raised to be a pretty, simple minded, submissive wife to some high ranking royal, and so she ended up being exactly that, no one ever expected anything else from her aside of giving birth and being a symbol, so she ended up being a self absorbed, simple minded, prejudiced person. Very unsurprising.

A well acted scene. I often come bacn to this scene because of it. Along with the truth about the hidden family. I was curious and dung into the history of them. The hard truth about those poor women hidden away because they were not born right and not perfect. It is honesty wicked, cold hearted and cruel. I’m glad I was not born in those times. I was born at ADD and OCD. I am better now as an adult off the medication than I was on the meds as a child. I felt like a walking ghost as a kid, didn’t remember a thing about school. I still got looked down on because I was different. But to be hidden away, declared dead like those women were makes me dislike that part of the Royal family in real life. Not the current members of the royal family but the ones who had a hand in hiding away their own family members. Thanks for uploading.

Let me explain it like this. Royals were extremely threatened if royal blood wasn't pure, especially since mad king George III. They thought mental health could be used an excuse for the monarch to finally be thrown out or replaced by a people's revolt. George V hid one of hus children moved at sandrighham House because of a combination of mental defects and epilepsy. The queen mother at the time would have him help tend hee garden and Mary of teck went to the workers children and asked them to be friend prince John who died at 13. Mary of teck was more humane and George V then queen elizabeth the queen mother was with her family. But when the child died, he too had all royal accounts stripped of his birth record. It is interesting that Queen mary who eats breathed and slept everything royal and often tended to be cold because of it was more humane than Queen elizabeth. The first of the modern century

it's so easy for all of us to point fingers at the royal family that lived a hundred years ago, you know (and really, anyone who lived a hundred years ago). it was different times, and looking at no one specific, but there still is so much stigma around mental illnesses, and physical illness, and chronical illness, and disability going on, a hundred years ago things were so much worse. that doesn't make it right, and i'll never say it does!, but it makes me happy that times have changed, and still are.
