Andre "Black Nerd" Review of the movie Hidden Figures starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, Kevin Costner, Jim Parsons and Kirsten Dunst. Based on a true story, a team of African-American women provide NASA with important mathematical data needed to launch the program's first successful space missions. It's a typical "Based on a true story" type movie, but it's one with humor, heart and positive inspiration.

Black Nerdy Sistas unite!👊🏼. I'm sure I'll get the "angry white male hating my comment" AGAIN, but, when I saw the preview it definitely hit home as concerns employment struggles. Hired for your mind and kept down because of your color. Whateva'😂. We're definitely going to see this, with my young daughter, who has graduated with top honors since grade school! My field computers, etc...but retired early.

I actually love how they depicted the racism in this movie - It was far more subtle yet still outlined. I think so many see Racism as giant specific things and they miss the small everyday racism that can occur, and by standing by and not supporting those going through the hardship, no matter how you feel, lumps you with the racist individuals - It's hard to stop or call out one person if you don't know who you're stopping (For those that seen the movie, All I'm going to say is Coffee). At the same exact time, I loved how they showed not everyone was racist, and not just important characters, I'm talking background one line characters as well, there are plenty of people who want us to succeed as a society that they won't let anything hold us back. Seriously, It's not an action movie and it's not a "white people are evil" movie, it's just a solid "work for what you believe in" movie. I believe anyone can find a relatable point. Every woman saw the limitations they had and worked past it, and that's a lesson I can 100% get behind.

I am an aerospace engineer with a BSE and MSE in mech. aero., and I'm currently working on my PHD part-time. I have been in the aerospace industry for over twelve years now. I am male, and I am white. I saw this trailer a few months ago and I was like "Yes! I've got to see that movie!" I was familiar with the human computer stories (rooms full of women computing analytical and numerical answers). I think it is a very interesting part of STEM history, and I've been fascinated with the difference between male and female approaches and interests in the sciences. In my arena, there are typically ten maybe twenty percent female engineers, and there are nearly zero percent black engineers. And of those black engineers, almost all of males, former military, and management. I'm really interested in finding out more about how the sciences are perceived and tackled in different gender and racial circles. I've started moving into that point in my career where I have influence over how we stimulate fresh young minds in STEM. Thank you Andre for reviewing Hidden Figures! Huntsville "The Rocket City" Alabama FTW!

my wife and I went to see the movie last night it was an amazing movie very good. it got its point across without having to hit you over the head with a hammer. I'd also like to point out for anybody who's watch the TV show Timeless that the lead character in this movie. the characters Lucy and Rufus get her help to keep the bad guy Flynn destroying the Apollo moon landing. and it's kind of like this movie because they have to sneak in and Lucy can only get a badge as a secretary and Rufus is a math mathematical genius can only get janitor's badge good TV show if anybody's ever watched it.

Anyway, I'm glad I found you and glad you reviewed Hidden Figures! I just got home from the theater, and I LOVED this movie so much! I also appreciated your nuanced review. You brought out a few points that I didn't notice. My favorite elements of the film are how powerful the black female protagonists are, the fact that they are scientists, and how funny the movie is. My least favorite part is how the three main white characters were magically cured of their one manifestation of racism each. But you know what, they made the movie and it is number one in the country. Hidden Figures beat Star Wars last weekend to be number one, and I cannot wait to see the box office figures for this weekend. Thanks again for your review! 🤓📽🚀

I command you to go see Underworld: Blood Wars. It's the best installment of the franchise. It gives the fans of the franchise all the things they love about it while adding new elements with some classic Shakespearean drama/betrayal. Along with the trademark action blending the CGI with the practical effects seamlessly. It's a roller coaster that doesn't go down until the credits roll. So open your mind and enjoy the ride. P.S. it's refreshing from all the marvel/dc movies this year LOL

Academically, I'm "smart" about History, Anthropology and Linguistics, but a lot of people see me brillant about Mythology and Storytelling. It's something I want to combine and write a book with a very brilliant, very unsocialized Holmes-esque figure, well typical nerdy genius who basically knows the truth of the world. That there are things we don't understand and come to find out aren't aliens in the sense we think them as but unique in their regards to combining old mythology with new. That under the UT Tower is a massive underground research and storage facility for the strange and the weird, an Area 52 to if you will right under many people's literal noses. The main protagonist becomes trained and soon a part of these secret world, acting as kind of a liaison between us the Blind and the Unseen. Of course I want it written well, comprehensive, and entertaining, where in some parts you have to ask yourself, what is truly out there?

I read the book but don't know if Andre would want to see it as the book is dark and sad and film stays true to the book(i heard from other reviews haven't seen the movie personally just trailers)

I saw at least one TV spot for this that completely focuses on Kevin Costner's character. None of the three women even gets a chance to speak a line. What's up with that?

Joe Blevins Don't know what you saw. Every trailer I've seen focuses on the ladies. Maybe you saw a TV spot.

Yes. I misspoke. It was a TV spot. I just thought it was weird. It goes way out of its way to focus on Kevin Costner, though, like it's HIS story. The ladies are barely in it.

Joe Blevins I see your point . I love Kevin Costner , he was a Hero in his pertral of All Harrison . the Movie is not being promoted as widely as it should be . Great Hidden Gem .

I am definitely planning on seeing Hidden Figures! I am all for movies about lady scientists. My smartness lies mostly in anatomy and physiology stuff because I'm studying to be a nurse, so I love all that blood and guts and all that jazz.

Great review. I'm heading to the theaters tomorrow. Don't go see Underworld. I saw the first one and I don't know why I'm the life of me there were 3 more movies. 🙃

Saw this on 01/01 for my birthday. Loved it. I would say that my one gripe with your review, as I did agree with so much of it, was the soundtrack. I did feel as though some songs where out of place. And while this is not to say the soundtrack is bad, I would say that it dropped me out of the film to points. Overall a solid 8/10

No, it's awesome that you made the choice to see this movie. With all of the superhero and comic book movies, sci-fi movies, and action movies, we need movies like this one and The Founder, which comes out on January 20.

If you liked the movie, you'll love the book. The books talks about way more than three black women. It shows that the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (NACA; the predecessor of NASA, was hiring black women "computers" as early as 1943. (Yes, I do realize that the movie story had to be "adapted" to a different medium.)
