I've lived near Redding but I have spent most of my life in Humboldt County. I completely get it about the weather change between the 2! Lol! It is beautiful here, though! And I love how dog friendly most residents and businesses are dog friendly! My Hound and I spent a LOT of time on the beaches. He loved it! He lived to be 17. 🐾❤️🐾

Fun video! Thanks for crafting this!! If you come back check out King Salmon for snorkeling in the summer, just mind the tides etc. Also fishing off North Spit is great, just watch your step! I've lived in Eureka for over a year and honestly it's great and may be one of the most beautiful places on a sunny day. (it can feel a little scary on a dark gloomy day hahaha) Sometimes though the rain is so gentle and magical. Also Sequioa Park is incredible for all the trails and zoo. All the best!

Eureka does have an airport, there's plenty of flights from Denver or San Francisco.... coming from Philadelphia where I'm from we had to connect at one of those two airports

It's not affordable . Poverty is a major problem, a living wage is almost non existent here. Rent is low in the awful parts of town, but it is as high as the Bar area in the desirable places.

Passed through Eureka last month and it was quite the pleasant surprise...the historic downtown was delightful... great bagels at Los Bagels, a real Zoltar at Eureka Books (great bookstore), cool murals galore and some gorgeous Victorian architecture.

Our daughter went to Humboldt State University and still lives there. We have been there many times. Whenever we go we see the Trees of Mystery and Ferndale. We live in SoCal so we take two days to get there. We do a overnighter in Clear Lake

I know exactly where to roll the windows down when you head 299 to the coast, right around the curve after Willow Creek. I believe Redding is so hot - the hottest place I've ever lived - because all the greenery is gone, stripped for building an asphalt jungle. Trees make a huge difference.

lol, I just finished a road trip through the southwest, up through CA, ending in Oregon, and I did stop in Eureka, and the tweaker problem is no joke. I was looking for a oil change place, so I parked my car at the end of a street so I could look on my phone, and within about ten seconds, a tweaker came out of the bushes and started circumnavigating my car. It was weird. Finally found an oil change place, and they wanted to charge me $130 for an oil change. Place was called "Down to Earth Automotive", w/ sky-high prices. But anyway, they were everywhere. Everywhere you go, basically there's at least one tweaker in site. I didn't have the best impression of CA. Everything was stupid expensive and either really ritzy or really poor.

I've lived uo in Arcata for 11 years and it's 8 miles between Arcata and Eureka. To go to San Fransisco is about 4 hours. No way is it 6 hours.

Eureka is a "quaint" version of any town. It is filled with mentally ill and or drugged individuals. We stayed in an expensive B&B and were serenaded all night by screaming crackheads and the sound of sirens. We won't go back, only drive through.

Eureka is a shithole. Nowhere to shop, nowhere to eat; boarded-up businesses everywhere; a massive drugged-out homeless population; when the liberals took over and the area became associated with latter-day hippies and marijuana, it took a nosedive fast, attracting bums and druggies from all over the country, and driving out people who wanted a decent place to live and raise their kids.

Humboldt isn't affordable for many of the people. The median income is low because there are no well-paying jobs, outside of the few elite, like doctors and the like. There is a major problem with homeless people in Eureka, equal to LA and SF (per capita). Housing is few and far. We have the most pets up here but few allow animals, so it's hard to find housing with a dog. Living in Arcata is like living in LA, in terms of rent prices. Not always, but it's shocking how expensive it is. You basically have a ton of rich, old white people who bought property all over, and then they rent it out or do Airbnb-in a housing crisis. There is no medical care here. You can't find doctors; you will be on a waitlist for any doctor, dentist, specialist. You are better off driving 5 hours to the Bay Area, which a lot of us do. Preventative healthcare does not exist here, so cancer rates and disease are a huge issue. People are poor and unhappy, so they gravitate to a lot of behaviors that lead to healthcare problems, like drug use, tobacco use, etc. The population is also aging, so all the healthcare systems will continue to struggle. So any affordability of living here gets offset with unexpected traveling costs for healthcare and more. The weather is awful. It rains, then the entire spring the coast has 30mph winds-everyday, basically. Summers are okay, but short. Humboldt has unmatched natural beauty. But in all honestly, the only reason there is a population up here is because extractive industries that are now dead. A university is what keeps the area alive, basically. That and some tourism, niche economies. Eureka looks like a post-apocalyptic nightmare in downtown from the dreary weather, the rundown buildings, and the zombie people wandering around. There are so many young people that come here to attend the university and are shocked to see this area. They are also shocked by the amount of intolerance and racism in the area. The university is a sanctuary for liberals and progressives, but outside of the immediate neighborhoods by the university, you start to see how Humboldt is a red county with a blue dot in it. It's awful. Thus, there really is no culture in Humboldt, outside of pseudohippies and pseudo good ole boys, and all of them are white. No diversity, which rubs off onto the music, art, and food scenes. So entertainment is always a let down. I am not being a negative person. This is the reality. Humboldt County residents die younger, they are poorer, they have more health problems than most of the state. It's worse up north in Del Norte. Humboldt, like most of the north, should never have been inhabited like this. People came in, threw out the Natives, desecrated the land to extract timber and gold, and then people realized that ruined things but the entire economy was based on it, so the area died out and a university was built to save the place. Oh, and growing weed was a major thing. Now NorCal is this area that constantly struggles, not to mention the Native Tribal people in the area continue to suffer while the land that was once there remain in the control of those who took it from them. Generational trauma reeks throughout the county, but Tribal people are always getting the worst. Not trying to be a jerk. I just don't want people thinking this place is magical. It's not. There are amazing people, amazing things in Humboldt. It's just a mess to live here for so many people.
