Oh my gosh, what a video! That was so informative and oh my, those beautiful homes. I grew up in a Victorian home that was not as Grand as those, but no money was spared in quality. How lucky I was to grow up in such a home.

those trees were even older than 1000 years. As recently as the 1960s or 70s, the Sears and Roebuck catalogue had an add boasting about their "2000 year old redwood patio furniture".

Great video and commentary. The Carson Mansion is the crown jewel of Eureka. The Pink Lady is also a timeless beauty. I am so happy that these two jewels have been so well cared for and I hope they always will be.

Eureka is actually a very nice place to live other than the homeless situation everything else is doing pretty well. PRETTY nice really. The roads are right now being repaired and improved. I live here and I really really like it. Like I said the only thing that is a little scary is the homeless population. A lot of them are on drugs and they can be scary at times.😢 Old town is close to where I live and the shops are amazing the ice cream down on the pier is fabulous. The views are magnificent so many wonderful places to visit right here close to Eureka. This video showed three of the nice victorians in the area but there are hundreds. Driving through the streets you will see so many beautiful victorians and a lot of them are very well maintained.

Those Victorian houses are absolutely stellar! I was a docent at a small, by comparison, Queen Anne in Los Angeles years ago. I dressed in authentic Victorian clothes and wore my great-grandmother's necklace and brooch and my grandmother's rings to add to the authenticity. It was great fun! Loved this episode, Jeff! Pretty creepy, those emptied vaults. I wonder what that's about? It took place early in wartime... hmmm. Looking forward to the next adventure!

I live down the street from the Carson Mansion / Ingomar Club, and I get to look up there every year at the pretty lights on the building during the holiday season. It is lovely and it's nice to see out my living room window. I do know some experiences that some people have had. They have been able to go inside other than members. Someone in my Christian congregation is a waitress there.🎉❤

Nice video. The inside of the Carson Mansion is amazing with lots of wood paneling and inlay work. The newer part in the back is a large dining room built for group events. The tower was said to be used by Carson to look out over the bay and keep watch for any of his ships coming in. When you were at the maritime museum you looked right down at the museum where I volunteer. The Timber Heritage Association Historic Samoa shops and roundhouse. Lots of history there as well with old train and logging history artifacts. If you ever get back up to the area I could show you around. Great video, thanks!

The condition of the headstone and the mausoleum broke my heart. My mother was laid to rest at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma, CA and when I was walking the grounds one day I noticed that most of the old graves from the early 1800s were in a section on the outskirts of the cemetery. Many of the headstones were broken, and the grass in that area was not watered. It broke my heart to see the graves of babies, soldiers, and the early settlers of San Francisco being neglected. From that day forward, I would always bring extra flowers to put on the graves of the loved ones who had been forgotten through time. Most people don't know that the graves of the early settlers of San Francisco were uprooted and moved from San Francisco to Colma so that the land they were originally laid to rest on could be used to build neighborhoods. Some of the time, they didn't even bother to move the graves. They just removed the headstones and built right on top of the unmarked graves. I will never be able to understand the lack of empathy some people have. I cry just thinking about it.

Not a member, but I've been inside the Ingomar club. There is a picture on the hallway wall looking north east of Arcata. And there are huge redwoods as far as you can see. No highway, no houses, nothing. I appreciated your innocence as an outsider to the area, seeing it though a different eye.

My husband and I went inside the Pink Lady when construction crews were trying to repair it several years ago. It was in bad shape, but still some of its former beauty remained in the fireplaces and stained glass. Unfortunately, Eureka has a very bad drug addiction problem and we saw lots of homeless people there. We love Ferndale and saw your episode!😊

no kidding, who knew, but you can't even see it apparently since it's privately owned, Jeff couldn't see it. I think it's something the state should buy and open as a museum. The pink house across the street is a bed and breakfast from their website. That also would be interesting to see, they are both classically Victorian.

Eureka has/had several Victorian homes. Somehow a couple, the Squires, obtained a lot of them. Unfortunately they didn't manage them and they were set on fire by homeless or became so bad they had to be torn down. Recently the Lloyd Building, named after actor Lloyd Bridges, another Squire property had to be torn down. Did you eat at the Samoa Cookhouse? We used to have class reunions at the Ingomar Club, but I heard a classmate who was a member passed away not long ago so we can't get in anymore. I joined the Coast Guard in '61 and when I came home I found they had built two pulp mills at Samoa. The emissions, which they claimed were steam, blew right over Eureka. We called it the "Purple Fog." It got so bad it made us sick and we had to move.

Love the Carson Mansion... My dad was a member. Been all through the place several times and what a Dream House!!! I have a painting of it and one of Squaw Rock that was near our house in Requa CA. Both paintings were done by a local Native from Klamath California. Also have a few native baskets from the same Yurok family. How sad to see the cemetery totally unkept now, back yrs ago when we were living in the area it was well kept!! Most of my family is at the newer Eureka cemetery.. my aunt Elizabeth Fehely who taught Ronald Reagan in grade school and Herb Fehely who's parents were some of the first families to settle in Requa in it's first dsys of becoming a town. He was one of the early managers of the Golden gate Bridge. They settled in Klamath Glen and had a bar, restaurant, trailer park for traveller's and motel back then before the 64 flood took most of it out. Love your channel, wish you'd come visit Chico someday on your journeys..... 👍🏻 🎃👻🦇

I once owned a calendar of 'painted ladies', and after a particularly hot & trying survey at the long-term care center where I worked, I decided to cool off by going to Eureka, where the weather man always seemed to show cooler temps. I was disappointed in the town, with limited viewing of the painted ladies I went to see. I did fall in love with the free zoo (after FINALLY finding it), and the lovely, mind-boggling dahlia garden discovered right next to the zoo. In disgust, I headed back home, but stopped in Ferndale to see the antique fair being held, & wished I'd known about that place first. Sigh!

Cool ! I've been to Eureka several times. There used to be an exclusive "Gentlemen's Club" in an old Mansion there. I believe that it had a canopy which extended down to the street. My father was a commercial salmon fisherman in Trinidad. I also liked going to the Samoa Cookhouse restaurant. I guess it was set up for the loggers in the area. Kinda set up like a Basque restaurant with long tables and food was served family-style. If heading South, West of 101 is a small Italian town of Occidental. There is a multi-generational family-run Italian Restaurant called Negri's. It serves family-style. South of there, on the road between Petaluma and Bodega Bay, is another family-style restaurant, in Valley Ford, called Dinucci's. If you like traditional Italian food, these 2 restaurants are worth a stop. Dinucci's is closed Tuesday and Thursday.

What a nice surprise, you visiting my home town! Even though I lived there the first 36 years of my life, I still learned a few things I didn’t previously know from this video. I was raised in a house just behind the Myrtle Grove cemetery. Kind of ashamed to say all us neighborhood kids used it as our playground for many years. No vandalism, but plenty of scares as we tried to see inside the spooky crypts! And you’re correct about the Ingomar Club not letting us riff-raff folks inside ever! Years ago, however, the Club apparently allowed police officers in. I know this because we lived across the street from one and he took us all to swim in the pool there one time. What a thrill, but we weren’t allowed inside, which didn’t bother us as long as we had the pool to ourselves. Thanks for the memories!

Another great amazing post, Jeff. Victorian style houses are so beautiful. There are some here in Knoxville Tennessee where I live. It's like going back in time. Thank you Jeff, for another incredible episode. Hope you and Sarah have a great week ahead. God Bless you both. 😊

Well done Jeff and Sarah! I should like to commend your bravery for flying the drone in the drizzle! I stop by the Carson Mansion every time I'm in Eureka just because it is THAT cool. Cheers!
