A small house coal mine once used by the Elza (1866-1944) and Rhoda (1869-1940) Williams family in Guardian, Webster County, West Virginia was hidden behind a point right behind my house.

Look like the Coal had a high sulfur content.

Most likely that is correct as a lot of coal was not mined in this area due to its high sulfur content.

No buckeye trees in the area of this mine; trees with nuts in this area include oak, walnut, beech, chestnut, and hickory.
