Great episode, very interesting to a part of London I have not visited. I live in Sheffield. and the first place I go is St Pancras underground. to get to where I am staying. usually Earls court. the one thing I like is getting from A to B quickly and the tube does that. the first time I visited London many years ago. I asked for directions to where I wanted to go. I asked this very friendly Londoner how to get from St Pancras to Earls Court. his reply was to go on the Piccadilly line the blue line. and then he told me to listen, son, you can,t get lost on the underground. great advice. within a couple of days, I worked out how to use the underground system. it is so easy. that,s why London is a great place to visit. not been for a while for obvious reasons. however, things are starting to open up.so I am looking forward to my next visit. I will certainly be visiting the transport museum of course. Thanks again fantastic four.

Wonderful episode! So sad to have missed the live chat today. I must say, hearing that train come to a complete stop behind you almost brought a tear to my eye as I so long to be back in London for a pop on the tube. I also enjoyed that walk up the street in Notting Hill. Have a great week and stay safe!

Another super episode from the Fab Four! Seeing those posters with their colours still so vibrant in the hidden corridor was just great. I’m with Laura on that one! But Siddy thanks so much for travelling super fast down the road to the shop! I’m a massive fan of Julia Roberts and Notting Hill was one of her best. So to see the shop again and the big photo of her in the window, although not strictly HLH, still added to a great episode for me. Thanks.

That`s a totally different shop to the one in the film actually.

The poster for the film "Too Many Crooks" allowed me to look it up in IMDB. It was released on March 8th 1959, so 62 years and 9 weeks ago! Also, the IMDB site has a piece on that tunnel, focusing on the film posters, linked to each of the films, including "Too Many Crooks".

Regularly used NHG going onto the East bound central line, only just realised that one line was above the other, lot of twists and turns from street to platform level

I'm really loving the Hidden London Hangout series The Chemistry between the 4 of you is amazing, love how you tell the history and most of all getting to disused sites on tube stations that the ordinary public can't reach or most cases never knew about. Notting Hill Gate is also a tube station i don't live to far from.

Some years ago, before the North Concourse at Leeds station was brought back into public use something was removed from one wall revealing the remains of a poster for the 1966 Southport Flower Show. Also, I remember some old posters being revealed at the top of the escalators at, I think, Waterloo Station. Possibly during the works for the Jubilee Line extension.

The fabulous circuit board style tube map (45:00) is a genuine by-the-minute working model and is an ideal candidate for Christmas present sans pareil, I'd argue. They make big and small London ones, as well as the New York Subway and others. Hundred quid plus if memory serves.

20 minutes of my life I will never get back! Just booked a ticket for Monday, but I could not find a way of changing details to allow for phone mounted ticket. So, bought for home printing, just hope they will be able to accommodate me on Monday.

Re the tiling in the CLR booking hall: if it was dark brown/red (like the colour of the rolling stock), I'm curious to know why Holland Park, when refurbished, used dark green tiles as per Leslie Green stations. Any thoughts?

41:14 That bit about how the Central Line stays nice and cool. 🤔
@jacksugden81903 жыл бұрын
The Central line tube tunnel sections that did not run side by side, as on parts of the Bakerloo line was due to the reduction of any damage to known surface buildings, subsidence and the roads above that were part of some rights of way which involved some speed restrictions.

Absolutely loving this channel. No doubt 'smell of an oily rag' budget, but 'chock full o' nuts' (gedit?). Especially love the lingering over, discussion and zooming in on the historical images - being a photo-phile. I think circa-dating each photo would further improve these. Laura quoting Ian Dury & the Blockheads 24:08 - well that is the gold we pan for! Cheers guys! from NZ (Travellers ---I stayed in the Uni digs around the corner in summer of 2018, great area to stay in Notting Hill, as close to economy as you will find. With kitchens.)

18.28 Chancery Lane the Westbound is lower than the Eastbound platform, Holborn the Westbound is also lower than the Eastbound, Like the teams pointed out in most cases the Eastbound normally below the Westbound or Southbound below Northbound which normally occurs when the roads that the tubes ran under were narrow during the early tube era (1890 - 1907).

Another great video. In the photo at about 11'05" there appears to be part of a roundel in the moulding above the Fullers shop. Is this just a coincidence of design or was the entrance moved at some time?

I started wondering while watching this, and even more so after today's announcement that elevators will be restored to Notting Hill Gate station... Was the underground more accessible in the past? Before the lifts were replaced by escalators. Or were there further obstacles?
@chrisnix79813 жыл бұрын
Hi it wouldn't be easy to put lifts back there now. Your guess is correct - on these older stations there were other obstacles when they had lifts - most stations still had stairs from the lifts to the platforms. Four exceptions: York Road, Caledonian Road, Kings Cross and Earl's Court where there was space to design the lifts to go between the platforms rather than to the side.
