I know this is long but bear with me? 🐻😄 There's one element of the story that has also been left out from the narrative and the viewer meant to build even more confusion. OK as he has stated anything after the incident he cannot remember. Only everything up to the point of him banging his head. He goes on explaining this point to whom he is speaking to saying he told the cops that he remembers everything up to the incident perfectly and that there were two men. But now due to the mental illness that was inflicted on him, they believe he holds no credibility on the second suspect thus dismissing his claim. Now having this disability he is sent voluntarily/involuntarily to be taken care of at a hospital in which he leaves or escapes to pursue his own Justice for the second suspect because even though he may not remember his wife deserves Justice. I back this claim because in the movie right at 01:59:56 he talks about why Sammy always seemed like he remembered him every time he came out to visit him for an evaluation explaining that you pretend that you seem like you know the person, that way you don't seem that much stranger to the person just to get a pat on the head from the doctor. Here in this moment you get a slight glimpse into his past if you can catch it because him talking about Sammy comes from personal knowledge as he has had to do the same and at 01:30:01 you see Leonard in the chair at the hospital pretending to be the one to recognize the doctor and not Leonard. Until the at 01:30:05 you see the sadness in his eyes and on his face as you see he into past before changing what his memory interprets.

That's the only thing I didn't understand. What's the meaning behind the tattoo? He did what? Why is his wife still alive? I assume she survived and he continued his life with amnesia, but why he got tattoed that after??
@shaggyspade2468
@shaggyspade2468 2 жыл бұрын
@@ksendza his wife was graped not murdered, he revenged her and killed the bastard. Then he accidentally killed his wife just like sammy. (Or maybe he is sammy, unclear.) In his grief he gets the tattoo removed, and thus he has erased his own memory, and removed the guilt of his wifes death. Making "John G." his wife's "killer" (because he no longer remembers she lived) the bad guy. In an effort to remove his guilt he's essentially doomed himself to kill guy's named John G.

@@ksendza That tattoo means Leonard's memory can be shaped and changed into anything. He is an unreliable narrator and he even tells us these things about memory in the movie. Natalie also says "you have to question everything". Lots of people were fooled into thinking the ending scene and John G's speech cleared everything up, but they were far from correct. We wont ever know the truth because Leonard probably doesn't even know.

It’s kind of how life is for all of us. We make the same mistakes again and again and we constantly forget our own morals, it kind of also explains the real reasons we should get tattoos, have something meaningful on our bodies to remind us of what we believe we should doing as a prompt. I'd say figuring out Leonard's lack of trustworthiness makes us re-evaluate him more than the other two characters; the point of the film is hinged upon his character's motivations. Why does he feel the need to manipulate facts (as he recalls them) or create a new John G out of Terry? Because Memento is a story about how people fool themselves in order to add meaning to their lives.
@simoneidson21

@urbanoutlaw858

Some spoilers here - The I've done it tattoo is Lenny imagining his revenge that he got John G (who never really existed, because Lennys condition is psychological, not physical. Thus there was no 2nd killer and it was totally invented by Lenny. You can tell by the way Lenny collapses in the bathroom when he falls opposite his wife, and the way he BS's how John G cleaned up the crime scene when speaking to Natalie. The same way he BS's how he got the Jaguar and suit when asked by Teddy. Lenny makes up his own truth.). Back to the tattoo, why would his wife be alive in the shot where his collar tattoo says "killed my wife"? Also notice the I've done it tattoo can only be read by a 3rd person view, so he is imagining, similar to the shot where Natalie tells him to close his eyes and remember. This review missed a lot of points and does not do the movie the justice it deserves. Also missed is the point of the 5 stages of grief, where Lenny is always in denial, because he cannot heal since he cannot feel time. That was a lot. But the movie has several puzzles, they are fun to solve after a few rewatches.
@Avendale
@Avendale Жыл бұрын
Yes there was a 2nd killer, at the end Teddy tells Leonard: "we found him, you killed him" Teddy also tells him: "two junkies too strung out to realize your wife didn't live alone" He says *two* junkies, Teddy also has the Polaroid picture he took right after Leonard "did it"
@urbanoutlaw858
@urbanoutlaw858 Жыл бұрын
@@Avendale The police on scene did not think there was a 2nd attacker. Lenny then invents John G up to deny he killed his diabetic wife by insulin overdose to help him cope and shift blame. He finds a detective (Teddy) who takes his case that there was a 2nd attacker. Again its really obvious when he BS's how "John G" cleaned up the crime scene when speaking to Natalie when Natalie asks about what happened the night of his wife's assault (the scene where he's going through the police report at Natalies house). Teddy takes Lenny's case at his "unreliable" word. Lenny invents John G the same way he invents Sammy Jankis. Why? Simply because Lenny is a psychopathic killer who makes up his own reality (his killer instinct is apparent when killed his wife's attacker at a whim, same with Dodd as soon as he sees him in his own apartment, add in the fact he makes up his own reality with his amnesia and you get a psycho serial killer). The first polaroid was just a John G who happened to fit the bill of Lenny's fictitious story.

Lenny did not kill his wife. You don't apply insulin shots at the leg. That memory was fake, Teddy was lying. Also, Lenny remembers Sammy and his wife, and even talked to Sammy's wife after Sammy's trial. Those memories are true because it was previous of the incident.

Leonard becomes a serial killer with the perfect alibi: he has Anterograde Amnesia. He cannot remember all the crimes he committed. I believe he’ll continue to operate in that town or another but will eventually get caught. Teddy was covering his tracks but since Lenny killed him, the police will eventually catch up to him. There’s no way he could continue to operate like he’s been doing long term without someone helping him. Most likely he’ll end up back in a state hospital or institution.

Help me understand: How did Leonard remember to condition himself to remember what he did to his wife as something that someone else did? If he already had his condition when he gave her the shots, he would have just forgotten. Even if he "remembers Sammy," wouldn't he just remember the truth of Sammy's story? How does he remember to change the narrative if it happened after his accident? He doesn't seem to repress or change other new memories throughout the movie, he seems totally incapable of retaining anything. So it doesn't seem to me that he would remember the insulin at all...
@youtubeepicuser4209

He has the condition, but repetition can train him to remember things. He lied to himself to keep himself on a mission so that he’d have purpose and be happy. He repeatedly lied and twisted the stories so that over time he believed them. In the end, you can see that he is cognizant of his goal to keep the hunt going. That amount of consciousness about lying to himself, plus the type of amnesia he has where repetition beats memories, conduces the mindset that he has in the movie.

At least you dealt with the scene near the end where he is in bed with his wife -- and with all his tattoos, including the "I've done it." That's been bugging me for years and no one has been able to explain it. This has to mean that his wife never died. Chronologically, it must be the _last_ event in the story. He must have gone missing on his vengeance quest. It must have been a long time, based on the volume of records he had in his binder, the number of tattoos, and having killed at least three men. This means that Sammy Jankis _wasn't_ Leonard, but the director made us think that might be the case, just to screw us up. Leonard didn't OD his wife with insulin and she wasn't killed by the attackers. It's unforgivable that the director inserted that clip of Leonard for Sammy. Anyway, the wife finally finds Leonard and they are together again. All is well, except for his memory loss and his murder of three people, at least two of whom were innocent. A drug dealer and a crooked cop, yes, but not the ones who attacked him and his wife.
