@WisecrackEDU Sorry, but people of color and marginalized groups are not going to break bread with people (especially the racist bigoted majority of white people) who voted for a fascist like Trump. People like me don’t care how much these people have been propagandized and fed misinformation to. We don’t care that they thought they could save 50 f****** cents on groceries and gas. These people still made the conscious decision to vote for fascist politicians who have promised multiple times to take away rights and terrorize immigrants without even batting so much as an eye. Some differences are irreconcilable, and sometimes there is no helping but to fight and stand against people that support evil things like fascism, racism, and misogyny. Talking it out is not always possible or the answer, especially when vile people like this have made it clear they have no intentions on doing better or helping anyone else but themselves. The election result is an indictment on the US as a country and its white majority. The US and its white majority has voted consistently for vile people like Trump in the past because of them peddling the same racist bigoted rhetoric (i.e. Bush, Reagan, Nixon).

I wonder how the parenting trends of the past 100yrs have impacted this process at a societal level... I know A Lot of people who had insecure and difficult childhoods, especially emotionally, and they seem to fall into one of two camps. Either they're stuck in the depressive state internally and the schizo state externally or vice versa. Myself I can empathize with someone while they're stabbing me, I often say that I have love for everyone no matter the good or bad they've done and only hate ideas, circumstances and bad choices caused by those. However I have a very hard time applying that to myself and I was raised by people with the opposite dynamic. Anybody else notice or have thoughts on this?

So my takeaway is 1. Americans hate each other 2. Because of the paranoid schizoid mentality that creates a binary good/evil view of the world. 3. This is based on an evolutionary trait to react to urgent emergencies 4. THe answer to this is the depressive state where the human mind creates a nuanced view of the world 5. The nuance comes from the concept of determinism that attributes someone elses actions to various influences outside the control of their free will 5. The paranoid schizoid mentality manifests itself into things such as whiteness and European colonialism.

06:18 Klein’s work seems to pair well with Norman Brown’s psychoanalytic notion of the Oedipus Project, which describes an unconscious process we all go through as children where we stop solely relying on ourselves to fulfill our needs of safety, satisfaction, and self-perpetuation, and instead root our power within the artificial symbol system of society. It goes something like this:
1) A child realizes that their “animal instincts” are insufficient for ensuring their survival, and accepts that their bodies are fragile, fallible, and “liable to vanish as a body just like other bodies vanish.”
2) The child turns from this position of isolated vulnerability to one of greater strength. They realize that self-perpetuation is not guaranteed, see that the people around them also want to perpetuate their lives, and starts to trust that participating in and relying on the existing cultural-symbolic system around them will make them more durable than they would be on their own.

Crucially, this all takes place unconsciously, operating largely as “a pre-symbolic or extra-symbolic conditioning process, fairly complete by the age of six.”

From this, Ernest Becker argues that the goal of human communication (meaning making) is to feel a sense of belonging. With that feeling comes power, and power means safety to our lizard brains. When individuals come together to form groups, they are not communicating with one another for the sake of communication, but rather to uphold the cultural symbol system which they have trusted themselves to from a young age, systems which provide them the means to satisfy their selfish appetites.

Conflict arises between bodies of power because viewpoints that differ from their own are seen as direct threats to the symbolic systems which the members of the group have entrusted themselves to since childhood, a system that provides them with safety and the satisfaction of their desires. Any threat to this symbolic system must then be shunned or eradicated. Coupled with Klein’s work, this process of power-rooting might help to further explain why Americans hate each other now. Source: Becker (1974) "An anti-idealist statement on communication."

That as soon as someone mentions your baldness (you grew a beard to compensate for it), you go into deadly mode, trolling anyone who even mentions that name. 9 minutes and the point hasn't been made. A few problems here: A) MAGA doesn’t engage with non-MAGA. They HIDE from us! They demonize us! B) MAGA TRUSTS Trump over ANYONE else (studies found recently!), and Trump is a pathological LIAR! C) Being “curious” or “empathetic” doesn’t mean anything when MAGA refuses to engage (see A). D) RELIGION plays a much bigger part in all this than you (“Wisecrack”) are willing to explore for fear of “offending” said religious loons or being called "bigoted". Trump LIES! Creationists LIE! The faithful (be they Zionist, Christian, Muslim) LIE! You break through this not by seeing the ENTIRE country as a Schizophrenic (WTAF?!!), but PRESSING THE LIARS on their obvious lies using LOGIC - something RELIGION doesn't handle well. HOW do we do this when “They’re eating the dawgs!” is still believed by the cult45 faithful?? We can’t. What you do is use the Socratic method. Go look that up (Wisecrack did a thing on it). You ASK QUESTIONS that highlight their own illogical thinking, and then ask more about those answers to get to the problem. The "Tumor" in their minds! That’s it. There’s no “very fine people on both sides” as this overly-intellectualized video implies. IT’S ONLY MAGA WHO ARE WRONG!!!!!! Go ahead, MAGA….(you watching this? READ this far, did ya?!!) Change my mind. PROVE you can debate rationally and logically right here and now. Think you can handle that? Or is it YOU who's the schizophrenic loon in this scenario?

As someone who suffers every day because of lead poisoning in utero, when my mom was pregnant with me involving where she worked, f*ck those people that said f*ck Flint. I shouldn't even be alive, and while me being alive is a miracle it comes at a cost. I was born with vacterl association (and then some). I don't care who Flint voted for. No one deserves lead in their water! Edit: I commented that at the beginning of the video. The ending, yes. It infuriates me on a deeply personal level. I was born with chronic pain, surgeries etc. born with rare medical issues... saying that is saying they want miscarriages and medically complicated disabled in pain babies and grieving parents and you get the point.

I mean, this is all great and shit, but please let's not pretend that "seeing everyone as complex" applies to fascists. And yes, every single person who voted for Trump is a fascist or too stupid to notice fascism when it hits them in the face. And NOT disowning family members or ending friendships over this would be an absolutely moronic thing to do. Mainly because entertaining them LEGITIMISES behaviour which is objectively, unambiguously, entirely wrong. So.... get a better example of something that isn't pure evil or unfathomable stupidity next time.

Love the video and love the discussions. This is an important topic and maybe a bit late to have; but better late than never. While I picked up on the nuance it leaned against the right’s views more than the left’s, I understand people are heated right now and very tired of the “both sides” view points (I know I am). I hate to say it, but the left can act a bit “fascist-like” at times and being aware of that is important. The right is very “fascist-like”, and thinks that is somehow the same? No it is not, it is worse objectively. A little bit bad is better and different than almost all bad. Which ties back to the nuance of the video: recognizing both how we got here and where we are gives us the bases to start finding the way out of this mess. That involves discussions like the one in this video and some* of the ones in the comments.

1:20 I mean, honestly, man, we're at a point where you can't feel sorry for people who repeatedly make these kinds of bad decisions. If they're going to ignore all logic and past precedent, how many times must the rest of us bend over backwards to get them what the people THEY voted for don't want to give them? My district went red this election (not a big surprise, although it was blue four years ago), and I'm already making plans to move to an area that more closely matches my viewpoints (possibly outside of the US). I've been politically active for more than 20 years, doing canvassing and phone calls, talking with people in community, and all of that. It's exhausting and for a long while I felt it was worth it. I'm not so sure I feel that way anymore. I'm tired of fighting and fighting only to have ignorance and hate win out time and time again. So, that's fine. You get what you paid for. It's that old (at this point) saying: "I didn't think they'd eat MY face screams man who voted for the Leopards Eating People's Faces Party". They knew what they were going to get; they knew exactly how this guy operates; they knew things would not get better for their water quality under his "leadership". They knew and said "we're fine with that" so why shouldn't I be?

I think my issue, as it expressly applies to Trump, is that NOBODY engages in an honest back and forth. After a while you just start to believe they ONLY care about “winning”. “Politics and politician’s are bad, he’s not a politician” seems to be the most Ive gotten. I genuinely understand that, but then I respond with, why him though? Specifically. Maybe they saw him in the news, or the apprentice or a magazine, and have somehow taken him to special pedestal and elevated him so much that their own humanity is on the line with him. Some think he was sent by god. That in and of itself is insane to me, but then they believe the founding fathers were as well, and the constitution is divine. I can’t connect with someone who can’t apply Occam’s Razor to anything they see or hear. Everything seems to be a large conspiracy. They have created a world where they are helpless and only one specific thing can save them. God or a president. They have their bible but toss out what they don’t like or contort it to fit their wants and desires. I will ALWAYS open up dialog with someone willing to help me understand, but it’s getting to the point that I am not capable of understanding. Logic didn’t help them arrive where they are and logic seemingly won’t get them out either.

The problem I see is that bipartisan mutual understanding and compromise is not as compelling as the paranoid-schozoid position. It’s the same reason KZbin videos that say “this was the worst game I’ve ever played” get more views than the more honest, “this game had some good points and some bad points and I’m left feeling kind of mixed on it.” People are more moved by the emotionally manipulative sexy headline than the honest one

Myeah that's a hard no from me Wisecrack, it's a bit too early to start whinging about how we need to forgive and forget to move on for unity and all that BS that just lets Trump and his ilk continue to destroy America and all it once stood for. I don't know how much more apparent it needs to be for people to stop enabling these people, but y'all need to stop enabling these people. If they wouldn't vote for you to have the right to stay alive because a rotting baby is stuck inside you, then you probably shouldn't worry about giving them a place at Thanksgiving and what pie they like.
