I'm not surprised that an alien couldn't find the actual hidden meaning in this film. Miyazaki himself said that this is not a film about "growing" or "exploring one's inner self". What he was trying to say in this movie is that the power and confidence that Chihiro needed to overcome her challenges have been inside her all along. And instead of growing into a different person at the end of the film, Chihiro actually went back to the same little girl before she entered the realm of the spirits. The scene of Chihiro and her parents entering the tunnel at the beginning and the scene of them exiting the tunnel at the end were nealy identical: exact same composition, almost the same lines except for one word from her mom, and in both scene you can see Chihiro clinging to her mother scared, suggesting that Chihiro forgot about her experience in the magic realm just as her parents did and went back to the starting point. One key difference, is that in the ending scene she still has the hair band she made at Zeniba's, suggesting that her adventure did actually happen, and it also serves as symbol that even though she had forgot about her adventure, her strength is still, and always has been, inside of her.

Bruh... he legitimately pointed out the "coming of age" nature of the movie and the ethos of remembering who you are WITH all the otger aspects. So yeah, he legit said what you are saying he did in other words. You should knock down a peg this "im smarter than you" tone. Listen to the freaking video, geez.

I want to correct one thing, about "love broke the curse" sorry it's not disney princess movie. Zeniba said that Chihiro manage to broke Haku's spell is because: 1. She feed Haku with the herbal medicine she got from the "stink" spirit. 2. After Haku ate the medicine he spit out something black. That thing was put inside him by Yubaba to control him. 3. Chihiro squeeze it out with her feet. That's why Zeniba laugh, and after that she told Chihiro to seat and have a tea. Yes Chihiro love Haku, but her personality here is just so pure, no greed, nothing else except helping someone who helped her.

Something not commented on that's certainly worth noting is the use of water and nature to depict the gap between the human and 'supernatural' world. A big idea in Japanese culture in the shinto belief in Gods existing in all living things. The water that ends up marooning Chihiro on the seemingly newly formed island represents her passage into the 'God' realm, and Kohaku's past existence as a river represents the Gods' places in nature. Another example is when Chihiro goes to the train station, she must use her wooden rowboat to traverse water once more. This usage of water, appearing to be the bridge or connection between humans and Gods, is perhaps meant to symbolize the close connection between us and the Gods. The usage of water in the bathing house to cleanse the spirit on his accumulation of material objects once again depicts water as a mystic beneficial force, natural to both humans and Gods, which purifies us from our perhaps consumeristic tendencies. Nature is the key to understanding shintoism as well as Japanese culture and influence in this movie.

Just because a lot of people seem to be confused about No Face, here are some thoughts: I think as kids we were all kind of scared of no face but if you take off his creepy image you're just left with a child. I think No Face was supposed to represent the way children, or young minds are influenced by the adults and environemt around them and if not taught right or wrong, will do anything to aquire their parent's love (which was kind of Chihiro's position in the film). So in the bath house, the people were greedy and so No Face reflected their greed. I think the way he aquired the frog's voice after swallowing him was also very reminiscent of the way children often swallow the words of adults and copy them. So, it's not like he ever wanted to be served mountains of food or be treated like a royal, he just wanted people to pay attention to him and blindly, he thought that he could buy people's affection with money, but he couldn't. The one person who showed unconditional kindness to him (Chihiro) wasn't interested in his gold and he didn't understand why and thus the whole rampage. By deliberately making him a creepy character, I think that Miyazaki was covering what was at the core of his actions. However none of this was said by Miyazaki nor the film which is exactly what makes Miyazaki's films so great. The characters, the story is just placed there and no opinions about them are stated, not even by the protagonists (who are often neutral) just left there for the audience to question and interpret.

Of course you could stick to your own opinions but I don’t think you know what anime actually is. Even though you may think that Chihiro and Haku’s relationship is wrong, Haku is said to be approximately 12 years old. Secondly, it may be assumed that Haku is very old because he’s a river spirit, but my point is that in anime there doesn’t have to be logic, therefore it shouldn’t be taken seriously. Additionally, this is only kids’ crush, I don’t see what’s bad about that. There are no sexual scenes in Spirited Away because it’s generally aimed for young viewers. I’m not being disrespectful, just speaking out my views.

Haku is a spirit. He's the God of the River which Chihiro fell into when she was younger. When Haku said "My world" it doesn't mean the human world but to the river named Kohaku which is him. And when Chihiro went out the tunnel, she remembers everything as a dream only (a vague one.)

Haku is under 12-13 years old. His clothes are for boys and it used to be treated as an adult from 12-13 in ancient Japan. Also, the Zeniiba's dialogue "Only love can break the spell" is not in the original Japanese version. The reason why the spell broke is a mistery. This movie is affected by the Japanese myth and "The Night of the Milky Way Train" written by Kenji Miyazawa. Haku is used to be think as the dead brother of Chihiro. He died when he tried to save Chihiro from drowning. In the Japanese Myth, when people die near to the dying spirit, they become half-spirits. The spirit of Kohaku river was dying and he became half-spirit. "The Night of the Milky Way Train" is a story of a train which it takes human souls to heaven. A boy took in the train somehow, and see off his dead friend Campanella. Campanella died when he saved a drowning boy from a river. Hayao Miyazaki dreamed that one day he will create a film like this. Haku saw Chihiro grew strong enough to handle her problems herself and no longer needs magical helps. So he finally can get a knew life.

How can we give something a try again, that never came to happen in the first place? Communism breaks apart before it can form, because socialism (a term, where english is a highly insufficent language) still has a pyramid-power structure. So while the goal may be Communism, by imitating the structures of systems before it it will always fall apart.

Another thing that affected Miyazaki's work specifically concerning passing the torch to a younger generation was the death of Yoshifumi Kondō in 1998. Kondo had been pegged as Miyazaki's directorial protege and his death due to an aneurysm, purportedly caused by overwork, affected how Miyazaki made movies and is credited as a leading factor in the announcement of his retirement that same year. Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke which preceded it, are both stories that seem to be about remembering and cherishing the past, but moving forward into an uncertain future, and I personally believe that Kondo's death heavily influenced the themes these two movies had.

You know-- Everyone was commenting about the "Chihrio and Haku in a relationship." So I feel like Is should give my take on it? I feel like Yubba's sister referring to Haku as Chihiro's "dragon boyfriend" wasn't actually serious, feel like it was more of joke or a tease. I think the reason why Chihiro didn't really deny it is because she had a lot of things to worry about. Everyone is saying "its romantic" which not gonna lie on my first viewing I wasn't sure. But after I thought about it the relationship felt more platonic, like friend love. Though I do understand why people are also very confused by Haku's age, not gonna lie I thought he was like 15 based on how he acted and looks. I honestly just watched Spirited away as of yesterday so the movie is still very fresh in my mind. Almost everyone is saying, "their relationship is romantic." Which again their relationship threw me for a loop, but I wanna say near the end I felt like the relationship was just Platonic. Feel free to tell me what you think though! And yes I'm well aware it was a joke but like I made this in response to all the comments about Chihiro and Haku's relationship.
