There is a hidden developer menu in the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S and this is how to access it. Please take care as you can render your device useless with some of the options available here. Make sure you know what you are doing.

It wont damage your console at all. Just turn off Dev Mode and you can play your xbox games again. Source is from Microsoft themselves

And they charged for it because now if jail breakers were to illegal mod the console their is a known about method to legally do it so essentially further prosecution can be brought upon those illegally modding consoles when their is a legal way to access it as opposed to if there was no way to access dev mode

This can brick your system if you don't have the $20 key Microsoft sells. However if you did by the dev kit key, it can be a really handy tool for emulating games from the Wii and below
