Thomas Grendan and Co., the company that supplied the footbridge were an engineering works in Drogheda who also built locomotives for the Dublin and Drogheda Railway. Regarding the signal cabin when it was moved the base was rebuilt with cementitious mortar in contrast to the lime mortar originally used. With mention of this single cabin bearing a family resemblance to Armagh, it is worth noting that the cabin at Douglas station, Isle of Man was the same albeit with a base in vernacular Manx stonework. The stationmaster’s house is a standard design found throughout the GNR(I) system/ network. The bufferstop in the goods yard is an interesting item. It would appear that the curved up rails was a GNR(I) feature as I recall seeing such a bufferstop in Dundalk Clarke in 1990. The canopy supporting columns at Malahide are different to the Manisty columns at Dundalk Clarke, Howth and Dublin Connolly. These chunkier columns with the intertwined initials are also at Lisburn and Skerries. They were also at (the Dublin end of) Belfast Great Victoria Street, Derry Foyle Road and Ballybay. The location of the gentlemen’s toilets relative to the station building is the same at Navan, Belturbet and was so at Newtownstewart. It is likely that this was so at most Mills’ designed GNR(I) stations. The waiting shelter is built of pitch pine. These shelters were found throughout the GNR(I) network. Whilst researching Clontarf halt some years ago I surveyed this shelter to draft plans of those which stood at that station. A variation of this design with a double pitch roof was used in the shelters along the Howth Tramway. I am glad that Siobhán produced this film documenting what has often been a Cinderella subject. Her enthusiasm and expertise are quite apparent in this.

Local lore has it that the arched entrance to Platform 2 was for the private use of Lord Talbot - one of the entrances to his demesne is across the road. A detail of the signal box is that the entrance was actually on the upper level and was accessed by a wooden stairway. I spent ages hanging around the station as a kid and my great thrill was to be allowed to pull the levers for the points and signals - the toughest was the distant signal , connected by a good half mile of steel cable. The reflection garden is in part a memorial to the late station master, Mr McCann, who kept the station gardens immaculate and alive with flowers, and made Malahide a repeat winner of the annual Tidy Stations competition

You must have been stronger than me, as I remember trying to pull those levers as a kid and not being able to shift them! Definitely, no health and safety inspections in those days!
