Brief History 👇 (Documentary Coming Soon)
The Molendinar Burn is a burn in Glasgow, Scotland. It was the site of the settlement, Mellingdenor, that grew to become the kernel of Glasgow, and where St Mungo founded his church in the 6th century. It was later used to power the growing town's mills and the name became adapted because the word "molendinar" means "relating to a mill or millers", possibly because that is what the Welsh name Mellingdenor originally meant.
Richard Thomas' 1795 "Map of the town of Glasgow & country seven miles around" clearly shows the course of the burn. The source at that time was a small loch at "Huggenfield" to the north east of the city (the present day Hogganfield Loch). The course then headed generally south west, passing through the virtually undeveloped areas of Craighead, Blackhill and Blochairn, where it passed under the Monkland Canal. Approaching the city, the course turned south past "Kirk" and down the route of the present day Wishart Street, passing under what are now Duke Street and Gallowgate to pass in front of St Andrew's Church. Saltmarket south of Bridgegate did not exist at that time, the burn ran through fields there to enter the Clyde at the present day Clyde Street at Mart Street. Peter Fleming's 1807 "Map of the City of Glasgow and suburbs" shows the city centre area of the burn in greater detail. It can be seen from both of these maps that the burn ran almost entirely above ground at that time.
The present source of the burn is Frankfield Loch in Cardowan. This loch did not exist (or was not mapped) when Thomas published his 1795 map. A short man-made cut connects Frankfield Loch to the 0.9 km (0.56 mi) distant Hogganfield Loch. The route from Hogganfield Loch to the River Clyde is fairly similar to that of 1795. However the majority of the length of the burn has been culverted in stages since the 1870s. Short stretches of the burn can be seen above ground in Molendinar Park (in the Blackhill / Provanmill area) and beside the former Great Eastern Hotel on Duke Street.
The final 250 m (270 yd) stretch from Greendyke to the Clyde was rerouted at some time in the past. The burn now enters the Clyde 125 m (137 yd) upstream of the 1795 confluence point, near the Tidal Weir.

This is the burn that gives Wellpark Brewery ( Tennents) its distinctive taste as it was rumoured to have been full of calcium, having run under the Necropolis. Great video, thank you;)

I read somewhere that the rerouting of the last bit was fairly recent and was because it originally ran under the High Court, it was considered a security risk.

Love that it’s a simple video with no commentary!! Have you experimented with fishing boots/waders, they usually have soft bottoms you can put studs in to prevent slipping - not sure how effective it is on bricks

Tunnels and pot holing can be very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing, eg if heavy rain 🌧️ is predicted etc, also lots of these tunnels were constructed in Victorian times when the population was less, plus you can get disoriented, again if you are inexperienced, Was trying to judge how high the water level actually rises to ? Absolutely totally respect the Victorian Engineers and builders for these amazing structures 👍

In the late sixties there was a flash flood down it and it was the source of water for Thompsons felmongery (sheepskin works)across the street( factory gone swallowed by Tennants). The flood wash quite a few hundred sheepskins away. Men went down the culvert but none were recovered.

Yes, that's the burn that runs between what was the Great Eastern Hotel and what was the St. Kentigern's annexe of St. Mungo's Academy. I went there too, 1967 to 1970. Many of the pupils fell victim to the Mollie by falling in when they had to chase footballs that went over into it trying to get them before the bal😂l carried by the burn reached a point where the ceiling of the tunnel got so low they couldn't follow. It was never that clean in the 60s as sewage flowed in it and the reek off clothes being dried on classroom radiators was overpowering.

@petermcmahon9437 thanks for that. I remember looking down from upper classroom windows and seeing hordes of rats at the burn so it wasn't too crystal then.that was 1960 when I left st.kents.so thanks again and cheers from Melbourne 👍

The rope would have to be a mile or so long buddy so not the best but good idea for safety... its a scary thought yeah being swept away for sure but it's a low tide. I was looking for water erosion marks at shoulder level in the wonder that it may get that high but couldn't determine. Just slow and steady really

What are you talking about? 😅 the River from Frankfield Loch runs towards and under the Cathedral then under the Ladywell and Tennants Brewery and under the Eastern Hotel and Duke Street towards the River Clyde. Culverted underneath the City Centre. I'm not going to argue with incorrect outbursts m8 so think what you wish.
@OssianLore
@OssianLore 27 күн бұрын
This is the Molendinar Burn. It is culverted from Blackhill and functions as part of the city's drainage network (much like this, and Glasgow’s other hidden burns, did before there was a city or even settlement) acting only as emergency overflow to the sewage system which is separate. I wouldn't describe the water as clean, but you couldn't describe it as sewage.
