Russel will eventually get use to the leash I think he loved playing with Skitter that will be his little treat to go on a leash. It was so sweet as if he was saying, " help mother I am being pulled by the neck". Its fun watching you feed the animals and all the other interaction. Skitter is very responsive to your commands, very clever sweet little dog. UK.

Leash training is important indeed. It is made easier by having Russell hungry and giving him lots of treats for every good command response and good walking with you.

We have them walk at our knee and use a small treat that is high value to the pup as immediate reward with a excited YES at the same time as the treat is delivered. So if he’s walking as you want him to hand down with the reward and YES but don’t stop. Continue to walk. Start with short walks and increase your time. He’s a smart pup. He will catch on easily. Train before you feed for best results.

My 7 year old dog is 86 lbs . I didn’t want his collar so tight not to slip off his head. So I use a harness. Love it he does too cause I can hold the handle on it to help keep him in line when needed.

My advise is to concentrate most on recall as a dog mom of a super sized dogs myself. I trained hard when they were young; the age of Russel and now they will stick to me like glue if I request it. I’m 120 pounds, 55 year old woman and my dogs are Great Dane mixed with something (?) but they weigh in over 160 #’s of muscle so I certainly can’t overpower them if they wanted to. It’s just a joy to see a dog that loves to be with their people more than a rabbit or what have you right? Such an exciting time for you all, I’m glad to be along for the ride so thanks for including us! Russell is darling!

I've never trained a puppy myself but from watching and listening to my dad train three of our retrievers. My dad was a duck hunter and he trained 2 Irish water spaniels and a Chocolate lab. At the end of the training session he would do an easy command and always end it on a positive note if they didn't do the command right he would keep going until he could praise them with a good job. As you know dogs want to please their people.

Great video Kevin. Consistency and lots of leash when first had puppies. Used training treats lots when obeyed commands. Learnt one command first before moving to next. Surprising how quick they pick it up for a treat. Russell will be quick to most things. He is a gorgeous puppy. Have a great day. Hope the storm isn’t as bad as they say stay safe God bless🙏💕

Great first lessons for Russell! 🙂 I was thinking that you could pick him up and carry him to the front yard to train and have Mojo get used to him, etc. After "sit" you can train him to come when using the leash. Say his name first to get his attention, then tell him to "come". Start with very short distances and gradually go backwards the length of the leash. When he comes straight to you, then reward him with a little bit of a treat. He looked so great playing with Skeeter. You could tell how much Skeeter was having. 🙂

Leash training probably needs to be done for a short time everyday and try not to take the leash off when they're pulling and complaining or they'll pull and complain just to get you to remove it. I can't wait to see Russell meet Mojo! It was fun to watch him play with Skeeter! Good luck with the weather!
@Godlover6148 ай бұрын
It's great to see Russell and Smeegle having so much fun together! That should happen more often, so that Russell is well socialized to the other animals (like the chickens and donkeys and Mojo). As far as leash training, it was pretty easy for me to train my dogs, but I live in an urban area. Dogs love to walk and explore things, so my dogs learned pretty quickly that the leash meant they could explore a part of our neighborhood. I think in your case, you'll have to let him think he is in control, so that he'll tolerate the leash, and yes use treats when you think he's ready to learn that you are in control. You get his attention with the treat, and use a command like "look at me" when he starts to get restless about your lead. Then give him a treat to reward him for listening when he does look at you. You should also do some focused training on commands like "sit," "stay," and "come." It's probably better to start with those first, and make sure you spend about 30 or 45 minutes to work with him each session. Once he has the basic commands down, he should be more receptive to learning "heel," which means you want him to walk even with where your heel would be when you are standing still. When you're training "heel" is the best time to start attaching the leash to his collar. Otherwise, he may never stop resisting the leash. There are also a lot of dog training tutorials online. Just do a search on KZbin.

Train on an empty stomach! Use his kibble and treat treat treat! Command to sit, treat then put on the leash immediately treat. Keep his attention focused on you while you hold the treat low and walk enticing him to walk towards the treat as you walk, give him the treat after a few steps and repeat repeat repeat. When talking to him hold a treat up to your face and reward when he looks at you. It teaches focus on you and makes him eager to follow commands. Multiple short sessions daily.

Russell is growing like a weed! He's gonna be a big boy! I just love his colors. If I may make a suggestion I finally learned after my 3rd puppy. Puppies seem to do better on a harness I think because it clips between their shoulder blades so instead of pulling on them they seem to do better in my opinion on the harnesses! Skeeter is such a good boy and just seems to go with the flow with the animals. He's a fast boy and thats sometimes a good thing!😂❤❤❤

Your videos are so sweet. I'm excited to see what MoJo thinks.

Consistency is the key. Like you said, doing a bit each day then the pup will get used to it. Just keep training sessions at about 15 minutes. Pups don’t have a huge attention span so don’t overdo. 🥰🥰🥰

Treats will be a big motivator with Russel. Just do any training before you feed him. Always a big hoot and haller when he comes to u. Try not to give commands when he isn’t paying attention. Treats will help with that. Thanku for being u and for doing what u do 🐾❤️🐾

My Anatolian was 183 pounds and he was also leash trained. He loved walking around in town on the leash because he received so much attention. People loved seeing him walk with me and would come out of their homes to say hello, and he loved seeing everyone. People driving in cars would stop because he was such a huge dog. If he had decided to disobey, there would be nothing I would be able to do about it.😁

Kevin, when leash training, put a few pieces of food in your pocket or even half a piece of cheese and keep him focused on. You and when he stays with you give him a treat every few minutes. H needs to stay focused on you and where you are leading him and not distracted. I had my Shepherd in training with a woman who trained dogs for the ACK shows, she's written books, and during our leash/ training time it was very important to keep him focused on me, what I wanted from him while he was on the leash and keep him busy while training not let him get board. Be safe and blessed

I leash trained my retriever by using Pupperoni treats. To start, I would attach the leash to his collar & have him stand next to my right leg. I held a small piece of Pupperoni in my right hand just in front of him where he could smell it. Then as we walked I kept the treat at my side so he could smell it & would follow along. After we walked 10 steps or so, I would stop, praise him & give him the treat; repeat the process. I repeated the training everyday until he would walk on leash at my side without having to give him the treat. RIP Cooper, my best boy.
