I agree with you about it being natural for your LGD's to take care or get rid of anything that might endanger the herd. You have a couple of awsome guard dogs that do amazing things all the time. This is just another of those things. PS: LOL at the poses you did at the end of the vid 😆

@@HiddenHeightsFarm You will have to watch them, however, to ensure that one of them did not actually attack & kill the goat. Most LGDs will separate an injured or dying goat or animal from the rest of the herd to ensure that that animal doesn't attract predators to the main herd. There is also the fact that Leeskee was guarding / possessive of the corpse which is actually not a good sign. LGDs can develop that trait and become possessive of livestock, particularly newborns to the point of running off mothers. He hasn't done it before but if this goat's death may have triggered some dormant personality trait.

I agree with, the fact that it seems like this goat died shortly after you left leaving room for their regular meal...then Leeskey following untill it got buried WASN'T POSSESSIVE BEHAVIOR ...CUZ HE DIDNT TRY TO BRING GOAT OUT OF HOLE....his tail wagging as you showed us where it was....N NEITHER ONE HAS DUG THEM UP...WHICH POSSESSIONAL HABIT WOULD DRIVE THEM TO. DO...THEY PROTECTED N WITH WAGGING TAILS WHILE YOU FILMED GOING TO BURIED SPOT ...THEY WERE HAPPY THAT GOAT BODY WAS HIDDEN FROM COYOTE'S. N HAPPY THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO WORRY NOR HAVE TO GET RID OF REMAINS...PLUS IF LEESKEY WAS GETTING POSSIVE HE WOUODNT LEAVE IT TO GO EAT HIS DINNER...IVE WORKED WITH SUCH DOGS 4 MANY DECADES N KEVIN YOU HAVE NO WORRIES WITH THESE DOGS.... no killer instinct to eat hearts n other major organs like would happen if dogs we're going to be a problem ....you are on the rite track... A deer had a stillborn baby on our property back in the spring and our German Shepherd, that was only 6ish months at the time knew it was a threat to the farm animals. She was eating it and when she heard us come outside she came to us asking for help, running back and forth to make sure nothing else had found it. She’s, obviously, not intended to be a LGD, but her ability to do that job still amazes us.

My uncle had a cattle ranch and his dogs would eat the dead cows. The dogs never attacked the cows but if one passed they would take care of the cow until my uncle found the cow. This happens when you have live stock and LGD's. It is a natural. A LGD will also eat the after birth of a new animal. Thank you for sharing this.

Kevin, thank you for teaching me something new. My sister has had Great Pyrenees for years and I knew of this trait of protection by removing death. What I didn't know was that the cyanide found on some fruit pits could concentrate in the brown leaves. I've always enjoyed fall and spring color shows of fruit trees, but now I know to keep them out of pasture areas. I'm glad you mentioned that in protecting your goats, you removed the wild cherries where the goats graze and left them in the yard where they would be important forage for wild migrating birds. A part of wise, balanced land stewardship.

I've watched many a LGD working in the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming. I was always fascinated by them. They would be out in the middle of nowhere.....no humans around for miles and miles....... I would be hiking and come across them. I was told by several shepherds (professional shepherds who lived out there with herd generally in a tent or tiny hut) that the LGDs would do this. If I ever ran across it, not to worry because it's what they are trained to do. LGDs are fascinating critters. I have always been in awe of them. Y'all have a blessed day!

Kevin, thank you for sharing this! Unfortunately, most Americans have become very complacent and distant from Agriculture, and really don't have an understanding of how things really work. Most want to walk in to a grocery store, but their meat in a little package, and not know what really happens. This major disconnect about our food production is the reason we need to start learning more about how to raise our food better. More humane, just like you and lots of others are doing Our health, and meer survival will depend on this!

Kevin, Leeske’s mom Leyla ate the back end of a goat that had died. She had gotten caught in the fence and died of strangulation. She also ate a kid that had died. So my guess is it was him. Plus he was resource guarding the goat, and probably wouldn’t have let Cora have any of it until he was completely finished eating what he wanted.

Thank you for making this video! Very glad you got home and buried that goat! I remember my Dad telling us what happened to a farmer friend of his. He had cattle and there was an illness sweeping through the herd. Some cows were recovering and some were not. The farmer dug a big hole with his backhoe. The vet came and put down the cows that were declining so that they would not suffer. They led them to the hole, euthanized them and just pushed them in. There were 4 or 5 cows they were not sure about so they did not fill in the hole, just in case. Well, that night, the LGD’s got down in that hole and started trying to eat the cows. The next morning the dogs had “the stumblies” and were in trouble. They ended up being ok, but almost euthanized themselves via the cows’ massive by-weight dose. You are definitely right about the risk of cyanide poisoning for Kora & Leeske. Good job! 👍🏻👍🏻

I have a Great Pyrenees and an Akbash. We fostered them through NGPR and ended up keeping them. The Akbash came from a farm and I was told he ate a lamb and that's why they surrendered him. My first thought was instinct that he ate it to protect the others from coyotes. Also when I got him he weighed only 88 lbs. You could see his pelvic bones and ribs! He now is a happy 110lb inside dog that has shown no aggression towards the cats or chickens. I want to add that he was also not socialized. He bonded with me right away, but he took 2 and a half weeks to go to my hubby and 4 months to go to our son. Now they are the best of friends 💞 I think you've done good! I think Leeske was sweet to stay by the goat and protecting him. You do a great job with your dogs and I agree with it being instinctual.
