Kevin if the 6X6 doesn’t work try plywood and cut a round hole in it about the size of a basketball towards the end and off to the side. I have seen that done before and from what I was told it worked very well. Maybe even cut a hole at both ends if need be. When it comes to the emu’s make a feed out of 4in or larger pvc that you can hang from a tree branch so the emu can still reach it. The feeder would be something similar to a deer feeder so the emu’s could stick there beaks in there to eat. Just a thought.

Kevin, it has more to do with the depth of the tank compared to the pools. We had a smaller one for our ducks and then got a great big kiddie pool (largest ones available here - 3 sizes small, med, and large) and once the bigger one was filled they never went into the smaller one at all, the ducks were able to swim easier and dive a bit with their zooming around. So I believe it has more to do with the depth then color. What you need is a large large round low height one for a temp "pond", I think the one we had was either 150 gal or a 300 gal one (used it for my golden retriever puppies and other dogs) to cool off in the summer. (it was a big round yellow stock tank, like 8 or 10 foot diameter and around 2 foot tall).

One way to cut down on the algae growth is to splash some vinegar on the inside of the water tank. With all the water that goes into the tank the vinegar gets diluted quickly, but it still changes the pH enough to delay or inhibit the scum from growing up on the bottom and sides of the tank.
@voidremoved2 жыл бұрын
Those water trough out in the field. They are in the sun all day, that will make the algae grow. At least if you can look up aquarium, that is how they can say to stop algae. Shut the aquarium lights off to kill the algae, and then try having the lights on for less hours per day...

Make a cover of 4 by 4 or maybe 6 by 6, paneling to cover the water tank. Goats should be able to get noses through to drink bit waterfowl wouldn’t fit. If the goats could get their horns caught in the wire, then a solid top with openings for access to the water will deter the waterfowl.

Have you thought about mounting the emus feeder to either the outside or inside of the pen you kept the emus in, until they were big enough to join the goats, ducks, and geese?? Or maybe to that utility pole, giving less space for the goats to put their feet on to hold themselves up to eat out of the emus feeder? Congratulations on the 100k milestone!! I'm so happy for y'all!! Look forward to all of your videos!!
@davidepool58842 жыл бұрын
You could try feeding the emus on the inside of the fenced in area where you kept the polish chickens. Feed the goats and then lock the emus in there for a little while and then spread out the feed for the chickens, ducks and geese. They eat pretty fast so you wouldn’t have to keep them locked in there long. It may be more trouble than it’s worth. It’s just a thought.
@cynthialopes9172 жыл бұрын
The only other thing I can think of to deter the ducks is to get some material kind of like the lawn chairs plastic or a canvas to be able to hose off if they poop on top. And crisscross it so there's enough openings for the animals to drink from so there'd be four corners and that might deter the ducks from getting in, even though they might climb on top I'm sure the ducks can jump on top. And that would be two-fold if you're covering some of the top it will protect most of it from being worn down or baked from the sun. Idk maybe a raised tent about 10-12inches over it. Would deter ducks hopping up and bigger animals can get their heads in under Tent. What ever is safest. Only problem I see is any animal get in and can't get out. Emu's maybe going for sand in gorilla wagon? Or a table that's tall enough that's not too wide so goats and other can fit heads and ducks discouraged. Ducks lol having fun in the pool! 🦆

I know this might sound far fetched, but I know a farmer that uses nipple drippers for most of his poultry and to keep the water fowl out of the stock tanks, he builds a modified cattle-guard style cover over them. The slots are just wide enough for the goats or young cattle to drink. The farmer has used several designs and various materials, but his main goal was to obstruct the birds from swimming in the water, and that worked. I offered him a few ideas using floatable materials for inside the tanks, eliminating most construction, and reducing the size/costs. You could try the easiest one, connecting gallon milk jugs together and making a floating island. You need to partially fill the containers to prevent wind from removing them, and tie the island to the tank. Another idea uses pool noodles in a similar manner. 😃
@davidwolf24782 жыл бұрын
Kevin for your feeding trough for Yoshi I would attach plywood with holes cut out large enough for him to eat but the goats would not be able to. You could also do this with the water troughs not allowing the ducks to swim in the water. I am worried putting your water up higher during the winter air will be blowing underneath making the water freeze quicker just like you see with Bridges.

You should make a little pin in the front and hang the emu feeders in it so they can eat their own food and then when they're done eating let them out. That'll keep the goats from eating their food. Just like this you want to feed them watermelon you can put it in there and they can eat it.

You could suspend the emu food container from above - like a chicken feeder with a lid that keeps it dry and a tray the food drops down into to be eaten. With no support to put their feet on the goats will struggle to eat any quantity of the emu food. You can put it on a pulley and crank handle to lower it for refilling.

I've not been through previous comments to see if this has been suggested. The emus are very flexible with relatively slim necks and high reach, so perhaps you could combine a feeder with some sort of lid (one they can see the food through, I suppose) that they can reach in through a suitable size hole that is just a bit too small for the goats to get in as well as too high for the other fowl. I was thinking possibly a smallish grid with a hole cut in it and the edges smoothed or covered to protect their necks. They might take a little while to warm upto it, but they are smart when it comes to getting food! I know you, Kevin, are smart at developing ideas/improvising around the place, so you will work something out
