I am a breeder and think you did a great job describing an OES. Just two things I would like to mention. Usually smart and active go together and females tend to be that way more than males.Males can be much more laid back and can be great for apartments as long as they have human companionship during the day. Select your pup based on their personality as right for you. Poopy butt is less of a problem when they have tails because lifting their tail up helps the you know what not to get on them. Thank you for letting people know more about them!

The tail tidbit is interesting! Good to know! I have a sheepadoodle that came out 90% sheepdog and now I need a purebred OES. Once I am out of this townhome I am getting a purebred to go along with my pup. He has been a lot of fun. Ambles and everything. Grew up with Shelties. Fun dogs as well. I love herding breeds.

Molly exhibits every characteristic that drew me to the breed. They are smart. Sensitive. Friendly. Loyal beyond belief. I'm glad you pointed some of the challenges. Poopy butt, mats, need for grooming, clingy behavior, etc. I've shaved a Sheepie butt more times than I care to remember. And I wouldn't trade that unpleasant procedure for anything.

Yes Tom nobody really ever talks about the poopy butt, but I really tried to make the video useful for past, present and future OES owners. It's not always unicorns and rainbows, but we learn from them and adapt.

@@HiddenSpringFarm Molly and poopy butt and grooming. Try as I might, and kudos to the ex-wife, grooming was a challenge. One of the 3 tolerated it. She knew she was hot shit after a one hours' combing/brushing. The ex was extremely patient. She'd comb out enough fuzz to fill a pillow. Baby would just relax and let it happen. Other two? Not so much. Jenny was adopted at 10 y.o. as dad's new girlfriend didn't like her. I must stop.....

Yeah I don’t know if the jumping has to do with the herding, but Molly jumps on everybody except my wife and I. I always scold her not to do it using the word NO. I love your video! ❤️ I'm on my 3rd Old English now. Owen is an absolute doll. Last year I had a terrible car accident, an aerial rollover. I’ve been researching old English sheep dogs for 3+ years and trying to figure out if they were good livestock guardian dogs with chickens and I haven’t seen videos of a actual oes on a farm ! So Thank you for sharing !
@HiddenSpringFarm2 жыл бұрын
Well Molly does have protective instincts, but we didn’t really train her for that. I’m sure they could be if properly trained. OES have true herding instincts, but again I’m not a pro trainer and we tried to stop her from herding cause it was annoying. If one wanted a herder one would encourage the behaviour. Herding is really hard to train anyway, but a true livestock guardian stock will need little training. They just need to be kept outside with the animals and they naturally bark a lot such as a Maremma sheepdog or a Great Pyrenees. With the chickens, ducks, geese, cats and now rabbits I just trained Molly from a young age to NOT chase them by discipline and saying NO whenever she does something wrong. Now I can have her around all the animals and she just wants to sniff them and be friends with them. She enjoys life on the farm, but I’m still building infrastructure and such so I’m not ready for a true lgd. For now Molly is the best farm companion I could ask for. Chad.
@RMS1292 жыл бұрын
I don’t have a farm, but I have an Old English Sheepdog that came to me at 5 years old. So I can only comment from an untrained instinctive behavior perspective. He instinctively herds people and other dogs. They were bred for herding sheep and cattle, so I don’t know if they’d be gentle enough for chickens. Mine barks and circles the neighbor’s chickens in their coop, which the chickens obviously don’t enjoy. But i think if trained properly they might be good for chickens because my dog is pretty protective and barks at strangers approaching the house.

My daughter is bringing an old English sheepdog, born February 1, to me from New Jersey from her in-laws. I lost my Standard Poodle to Covid a month ago. I’m nervous about taking in another dog so soon. I have ptsd military related. Watching your video addressed separation. My poodle went everywhere with me. The sheepdog looks a bit large to go everywhere. I am thinking crate training when I go to the hospital or grocery store. My poodle didn’t tolerate a crate. Your Molly is beautiful and seems to enjoy herself, simply being outside. I have a horse that she can bond with. Thank you for the sani tips and the grooming tips. Love to you and Molly.

This is a great story. I’ve talked with several people who were training this OES breed as support dogs, they are very sweet natured and mature nice and calm. They crate train just fine, that’s what we did. They are a decent size, big enough to cuddle (they love that) but not too big…they don’t shed and don’t slobber everywhere. They do need a good amount of grooming though. Best of luck.

I dearly loved my Nana. She was my best friend and constant companion. People who were actually afraid of dogs would approach Nana. She was a magnet and loved nearly everyone. I lost my dear girl in her fifteenth year. It has been that long again since she passed. I still reach down in the morning to find her. Looking around for a successor to her it was rudely apparent that they were far too expensive for me! So my dear girl will likely never have a successor. I did have a problem with changes in her dog food, or diet. The slightest change would produce diarrhea. For instance, when Iams changed their formula in '04 she was sick for a week. I ended up changing brands to solve the problem. I was told it is a common problem with the breed. I had to keep Nana clipped around her backside. When we moved out into the countryside of Northern California there was a serious problem with wild celery which we call Beggar Rice or Velcro burrs. I had horses for years and used my clippers on her to trim her coat. She could be more work to keep groomed than a horse ten times her size!😆 As to obedience, she was as Molly, very smart and easy to train. All except potty training. She was the hardest dog I have ever had for that. She picked up quickly what my problem was, but just had no control of the process. She eventually became completely dependable, but it did take a frustratingly long time. Nana excelled at everything else. Oh how I miss her!

Beau will be two Jan 6. You're right about the breed. He is the best dog I have ever had. He loves to run but does great indoors, too. He is attached to me wherever I go, total loyalty. The hair though is omg, a chore. I'm told to try to keep hair at least an inch or too because it protects them from cold and heat where they don't have the pigmentation to protect them without. I would love to see the breed expand but also understand the upkeep. Has to be a way to keep them comfy and not overly time consuming to groom.
@HiddenSpringFarm2 жыл бұрын
2 yrs old already eh. Molly's hair is so dense I can't keep up so she goes to a groomer every 6 weeks or so. Olive's hair is not so bad and is easily brushed. The extra grooming is just about the only neg about this breed though right. Their personality more than makes up for it plus the hair doesn't shed like most dogs. They are very adaptable as you can see with Beau.

Best snowball trick, use a real wire cooking whisk, the thinner wire the better (cuts snow better and softer), use like a brush were snow can drop safely. You still have to towel dampness but the snowballs come off quick and easy. The wire we think, as a heat conductor melts through. We have a 2+ OES female and it's the best solution we've found.

They are incredibly sweet but can be protective too, I'm sure one could be trained to be an LGD but would have to start from a puppy living outdoors otherwise if they become house dogs they are too nice lol. A big dog bark is all it takes to scare away coyotes, but in our case Molly doesn't really bark that often, maybe it depends on the personality of the dogs too. Did you catch today's episode? Having 2 , female 3.5 years old, and a Male just over a year, they are awesome dogs, and anxiety is alot more pronounced with a male in my experience so far , big sucks, but currently working to help my boy with getting past that, other then that he love to cuddle up like a teddybear .. My OES's are from southern Ontario breeder(same breeder of over 30+ years of OES) as I live in the north and I hope the breeder is still around in another 10 years as most breeders are getting up in age and retiring with no one to take over.... Going anywere with these 2 gets so much attention, and they just love it, its like they know it too....

That's amazing, our Molly is from southern Ont too I wonder if it's the same. Our farm is in Horseshoe Valley area. I'm so impressed with this breed I hope one day to be in a position to breed, but for not I just help promote them on our channel. Olive was given to us from a viewer because of it so now Molly has a little sister. There's not enough OES in the world and far too many people have never seen or heard of the breed. That needs to be changed. Thanks for the comment & Have a great day, Chad.

That’s great news she must be getting so big now eh. Molly was spayed around 14 months old. I think I waited until her first bleed then booked it. Molly just turned 4 years old and is a really incredible girl.

Did you consider a Bouvier des Flandres? As a herding dog, they share similar traits as the Old English Sheepdog. But I feel like the Bouvier is better in protecting farm animals.

Where did you get Molly? I’d love an OES, but want a big sturdy girl like Molly!
@HiddenSpringFarm2 жыл бұрын
Oh we got Molly from a breeder here in Ontario. Molly is very strong and sweet too and has a great pedigree. If you want details send me an email. There are only a few OES breeders in Ontario and we were 14th on a waiting list, but got Molly early cause most of the people ahead of us wanted a male. I wanted a female as I feel they're easier to train. Best decision ever as Molly just makes our lives so much better. Chad.

OES are the best - without a doubt. Their personalities are amazing! Whoever said they aren't smart simply has not spent time wth the breed - heck you don't need to train them, you just have to talk to them. Mine loved to talk & we had some interesting conversations. After a time, she could ready my body language and I learned to read hers as well. A nieghbor or ours enjoyed taking her for a walk from time to time, he used to say she was a "chick magnant." Everyone wants to say hi, and our dog loved to respond in kind. And yes, when I used to come back from a business trip, I could expect at least tne minutes of hugs and kisses. Just the best!
@HiddenSpringFarm2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree, its the national kennel clubs that mark them way down the intelligence list. I find ours to be extremely smart, they even apologize when I've scolded them. It must be a subjective score though cause every dog is different, even in the same breed.Molly will watch me like a hawk when I'm eating a snack and she's looking for my mouth moving and listening for the crunching lol gotta sneak in some snacks here and there or she will whine cause she wants some lol,.

We’ve got a 4 and half month old old English sheep dog really good in most areas temperament is excellent, house trained …..almost apart from the nipping this is a very stubborn trait to get on top of.
@HiddenSpringFarm Жыл бұрын
Yeah once I realized to teach ours “NO” the training became easier, I must have said NO ten thousand times before she stopped. It’s in their nature as a herding breed and does take patience and persistence to stop. Molly is 3 years old now and is a sweetheart, she even learned to ring our doorbells in two weeks. Now if she wants to go out she rings the bells.
@Robcatist Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you’ve got a lovely well trained dog….ten thousand times??!!! Thats roughly how many times my wife has said no to me 😁, to be fair Archie’s only 4 and a half months old everything else training wise has been very easy as he’s very food motivated so I think we’re expecting just a bit to much for the puppy trait of nipping to stop just yet but OES I renown for taking it in to adult so perseverance is required on our part.

Do you use that wax stuff for outdoor dogs in winter? protective cream or what not so their pads do crack and bleed etc. I forget the name. Cheers!
@HiddenSpringFarm3 жыл бұрын
I actually haven't use any wax yet but I do in fact have an order in from Amazon. It's called mushers wax. I tried booties, but they didn't stay on all day maybe they're good only for a quick walk but not for running around. I'll try this mushers wax and chat about it in an upcoming video.

Mine is nearly two. Was weight are/ is yours… wondering if she is overweight at 32.2 kg. Although my dog is nt as muscular. Also what do you all feed yours ? I am feeding cold pressed kibble at the mo
@HiddenSpringFarm2 жыл бұрын
Molly just turned two May 17th and she is 86lbs or almost 40 kg. She is a solid dog that is living a great life on the farm. Her pedigree is also good as she is the pup of a show dog breeder here in Ontario. Molly is lucky enough to be on a farm so she eats well with tons of exercise as she free roams. lots of eggs, dry kibble along with wet canned food, but we also prepare lots of meals of fresh food that my wife cooks up mostly chicken with carrots and gravy over white rice. Molly never overeats though, if she's not hungry she won't eat or she doesn't finish her food. We only feed her one big meal a day with many snacks throughout. She's weird too cause although we give her food at 6pm she doesn't eat until around 9 or 10 at night. Molly is amazing though, we love her to bits.

You say they don't shed, how would the dog be for someone with allergies?
@HiddenSpringFarm8 ай бұрын
Well, no dog is really hypoallergenic. That said, my brother has a lab that sheds and I can only last about two hours inside before my asthma really kicks in. Don’t have that issue with these dogs in my own house. They have hair not fur so I think that makes a big difference. Their hair does fall out especially when grooming and they will collect in hair fluff dust bunnies in the house but nowhere near the same as a shedding breed. I brush them outdoors anyway.
@Lucky_feather278 ай бұрын
@@HiddenSpringFarm thanks for the response! There is so much conflicting information out there with regards to this. My girlfriend has mostly minor allergies but enough that it's a concern so perhaps this breed is still a good choice if we commit to brushing daily and keeping puppy clean

I have 2 OES. They both love everything that's alive, basically. Always have done. Even if another dog is snarling, they still stand there smiling & wagging their tails, not understanding why the other dog doesn't want to see them. You seem to have a dog that's not too many generations away from a working dog. In the UK, they haven't been used as working dogs for decades, and my 2 are definitely not the most intelligent dogs! Their heads are too full of nonsense and fun to remember to use their intelligence! My older one has always been happy to be active or a couch potato. The younger one needs a good, long walk, weekly, on top of his daily walks, but still has some couch potato traits. Neither of them really try to herd except when they walk in between our legs so they can get a butt scratch! They are so much fun to be around. I wholeheartedly endorse that everyone should get one and make them popular again!
@HiddenSpringFarm Жыл бұрын
Molly is like a couch potato now too lol, but we also have Miss Olive (given to us by a viewer) and she is as high strung as it gets...if she doesn't get a few hours of running around the farm forget about it lol she fidgets all night long. Thanks for sharing.

Only one observation that many OES' exhibit. Drippy chin/slobber. Shadowsky, my goofy male, reacted to TV commercials with dogs featured. I had to clean the TV screen every time those commercials aired because he attacked the screen. Slobber everywhere. I thought nothing of the drippy chin, but the uninitiated were put off by that common trait.
@HiddenSpringFarm2 жыл бұрын
Oh yes Tom that's right...when they're drinking they get the wet beard.
@rebusdan2 жыл бұрын
I think it is just plain stupid, that the OES is so low on the intelligence list because for what i know it's about the only dog that can read the clock.. Hahahaha ( they know exactly what day and around what time a certain person will come, especially if it involves treats)... They like to be the center of attention and often the dog tries to act as the guesthost when receiving visitors.. i think they are also big comedians and practical jokers... The last is one is something you might experience in the future but the OES stays playfull for a pretty long years ( so around 8/9)... Good luck for and with Molly
@HiddenSpringFarm2 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. I've had several breeds before the OES and I find Molly to be the smartest. How would they even test their smarts anyway, it must be so subjective. Molly knows when my car is pulling in the driveway and is always waiting to greet me with excitement like she hasn't seen me for years. And she knows my wife is the one giving her dinner cause she'll give her a little nudge in the butt...she never does that to me though. After dinner she comes to my office and moans for a treat everyday. We now have another oes named Olive given to us by a viewer so I'm in double trouble lol. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
