Strangely enough, the CV collector lineup is one of the best for this level (in my opinion), two riposties, as HWM and frontline support MaA, with Vestal being main healer, and Anti for Dodge bluffs, and forced guard (the rest of which going to preference) in conclusion, I'm fighting the shuffling horror as a mini-collector.

I went into this blind with my team of Hellion, Houndmaster, Vestal and Plague Doctor (armor still lv4 btw). Barely survived with 4 afflictions and Plague Doctor chilling at death door around 5 times in the boss room, despite my Vestal having both Sacred Scroll and Junia's Head equipped (that's an extra 66% healing skills !) and everyone else having a book of sanity with them. In the end it was the blight and bleed that killed the boss (still have no idea how she managed to stack 3 consecutive blight on that thing). Skipped the treasure room but at least everyone got out alive so im happy with that. At first i tried to not spoil the darkest dungeon for myself, but after this and knowing the second quest is gonna be a long one, i think i'm fine with spoilers now.

I run a Ocult, Jester, Highwayman and Man at arms, pretty good overall until the the healer do the mighty Bleed and 0 heal . No deaths but a heart attack on myself.

I found it interesting that once you completed this mission you will find that sometimes the character icons will turn into monsters. Some may found it disgusting but it is just awesome .

It's a little funny: in three trips through here, I have never camped in the recommended room...I always do it in the treasure room or the final room before the end, since I always want to be sure that last hallway fight doesn't pile too much garbage on me before getting to the main event.

This maximizes the fights, however you can keep the campfire as a safety net for sure! I personally like using all 4 fights from the campfire, but it is more risky because it is a main source of stress removal.

I did this blind for the first time, big mistake. Here was my loadout: Arbelast Vestal Crusader Leper Lost everybody execpt for Ravioli the Leper, who came in clutch with a crit. You will all be missed, Belt, Mallory, and SirComplainsALot.

I finished the first DD quest. My team comp was (from rank 1 to 4): -BH: Ancestor's pen + Flesh's Heart -Hwm: Ancestor's Signed Ring+ Gunslinger's Buckle Jester: Tambourine + Bleed Amulet (The amulet went crazy) -Vestal: Bloodthirst Ring (i know you didn't like the ring, but i love it on my Vestal lol) + Junia's Head. It was surprisingly easy! Battle Ballad, Ancestor's pen and the mark synergy with highwayman / BH made the dungeon pretty relaxed. The witch were a little problematic but the bright tambourine helped a lot. I even defeated the boss with Jester's finale for 51 damage. The funny part is that one time i summoned the Shambler with the same Jester. The Shambler defeated Dismas and 1 Hellion. But the Jester had a Virtue and used finale for 50 if i remember correctly. My boi Canaigres (Jester) created 2 of my most beautiful and hyped memories from Darkest Dungeon. Man i love this game so much.

This guide made me realize Vestal is a huge trap in this dungeon. Doesn't bring any damage, and while she can top everyone off, can't do anything about the stress. I think next time I will bring Highwayman instead, focus more on ACC equipment, and make my Man-at-Arms have a more aggressive set-up. Thank you for putting this together! This dungeon is honestly stressful more because I don't want to grind people back to rank 6 and get the accessories I need, hahahahah

I've never tackled this dungeon without a stress healer - in fact I always go with Jester and Hound Master - so it's interesting to see it done a different way. The Highwayman looks perfect.

Just did the dungeon for the first time after watching this, crusader, shield breaker, occultist and vestal. Had 2 on deaths door during the horror fight and then lost two before the horror even died. The last two (occultist and crusader) were BOTH on deaths door against priest and both died before they could kill it. Lost one of my best parties ever... But hey, completed the quest and got like 5 achievements for heart attack death, team wipe, surviving 5 deaths door and other stuff I can't remember.

Thanks for the guide, it helped a lot. Concise and well explained! I finished the quest with a grave robber + occultist + crusader + hellion team, it was a bit sweaty due to rng but still surprisingly easy and fun. The occultist had been in my Hamlet since the first weeks, died, got revived in that town event, proceded to go on many more missions and now survived the Darkest Dungeon itself. Absolute legend. I love these little stories of sorts you get while playing and the fact that there really isn't a "meta" team in this game.

finished this level with Occultist, 2 Highwayman and Crusader yesterday after watching this guide. Got very lucky when my crusader hit 100 stress early on in the dungeon because of The Finger but turned out to be powerful instead of an affliction. Anyway thanks for this tips!

The finger ability can be a little rng dependent because a critical or focus fire can really hurt. I am glad it worked though!

I'm watching this after going in blind (I guess I just like the experience that way) with a Vestal, Highwayman, Hellion and Graverobber. The Hellion (my fav for a long time, her name is Britney Bitch) ramped up 195 stress at the end of the boss fight and I was praying not to lose her! Thank god I got out okay. Great video btw.

3 Highwaymen get this done actually quite well. The raw damage Output is just insanely high. The only downside is that you have to occupy 3 roster Slots with hwm. Hellion is also really good here from my experience

The hellion would be excellent for this dungeon, and I probably would replace the bounty hunter with her if I had a second chance. The only reason why I would be nervous about 3 highwayman in this dungeon is because I really like one for the final and third.

It is the path I choose, but I think it avoids must of the heaviest stress fights, but the path can be subjective depending on your party.

The first time I fought this boss, I went in blind, I had a party of 2 MAA, a BH, and a vestal, 2 of them died on the boss fight (forgot who), but it was worth it. I was surprised, I thought that all enemies there would be immune to stun, tanky, with high prot and hp, and be stupidly high physical and stress damaging, but they were surprisingly manageable. The difficulty spikes up in the next missions. Spoiler for next bosses: Revelation squads strat: Equip 3 with special torch trinket, use a MAA to guard the trinketless hero revelation deals high stress damage, and as stress reduction caps at 80%, revelation hurts your head even with the special torch trinket (but that allows you to use ancestor trinkets or the abomination resistance camp skill without any drawbacks, as 80% stress reduction is the cap, so anything that increases stress up to 20% has no effect on the stress you receive from revelation ) The big cancer beholder thingy strat: The dungeon is big, like BIG There are 2 cancer beholders in the dungeon, they’ll be in specific spots that you can find in the wiki if you are not in the mood to explore the big dungeon, but I’d explore it, it’s the last and only giant mission in the base game, so enjoy it, if you are in radiant and have a full roster of heroes, send a party to explore there before killing the bosses after finding out that the cancer beholder was a coward and had a high chance to run away every turn, I brought a hellion with iron swan to hit and a BH to stun the little guy (the weird little guy is the one that allows it to run away), then the fight was manageable, laser hurts though I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA HOW TO FIND HIM AFTER HE RUNS AWAY, the dungeon is really big, so DON’T LET HIM GO, if you let him go, I’d say you just lost 15 minutes of your life and a lot of food, and supplies, and gold, a lot of gold. Now real spoiler Against final boss strat: you may look at the mission menu and see it is considered a short mission , and you may think that there’s a catch (like the shrieker short mission, where you start in the boss fight), you would be incorrect, so buy food, imagine passing 2 hunger checks on your way to the boss, and pathetically losing 2 heroes in phase one and getting one affliction to top it off, losing everyone, unlocking that cool achievement. The boss has 4 phases, better plan ahead, spend all your money on things to help, except shovels and laudanum, don’t forget to soft reset the mission until you get a critical scout, the devs put a Easter egg in there for you. you’ll automatically lose 1 to 2 (2 is most likely to happen) heroes, unless you fight with only 2 heroes (a guy killed him with only reyrey and dismas, look it up on KZbin) or cheese the fourth phase with a leper or jester (look for guides on KZbin), so don’t be stupid, let your front row guys with self sustain alive and kill the back row healer/ support when they politely ask you to kill someone bring tons of bandaids and antivenom, be prepared as he deals high stress damage, bleed and blight, bring heroes that damage all positions for phase 2 (like the leper, but in all seriousness, I brought a leper and I was fine, self sustain rules in phase 4), phase one is easy, just kill the clones he summons, the real one is invulnerable, but killing his friends will make him sad, hurting his feelings, triggering phase 2 phase 2 sucks (big stress and damage), the boss gets taller (not joking), and he summons the broken furniture from the prophet fight, but the furniture is invincible now and is called absolute nothingness (you can in theory kill them, but it’s stupid, and you’ll get nothing from that, you need to land 100+ hits triggered by the fated quirk, which would probably take 1000+ attacks if you are lucky ), so you’ll have to target the boss directly, and he changes positions every turn, so a highwayman, a BH or a hellion help a lot phase 3 is just a window to heal (just hit him to heal, but you’ll get blighted, no really, it’s weird), so relax a little, his attacks in phase 3 are not annoying, if you made this far without losing anyone, pat yourself on the back, because you’ll shortly have to choose 2 of them. after 1 or 2 turns of easy blights and easy heals, phase 4 starts, you’ll lose 2 heroes during this phase, so don’t kill dismas or reyrey for the chievo, leper and crusader (not reynauld, too risky) are both good here, as self sustain is great, just keep chopping and smiting the boss until he dies. Even more spoilers up ahead: After he dies, he is dead, kinda, and you win, kinda.

I was able to do it pushing with an Abomination spamming rake, a Crusader with healing and stress healing trinkets spamming healing, an Occultist with healing and debuff trinkets and a Plague Doc to buff the Abomination and remove bleeding. Was tense but thanks to the route I made it nicely.

I first did this dungeon with an Occ, PD, Abom, and Hel, actually went pretty well surprisingly, even though I forgot to equip the proper skills. Only problem, is all the stress targeted the Occultist, and he had to tank two heart attacks and some bleed, surprisingly, he lived. So, all in all, I need to stop stressing myself the hell out about high-level areas, else I'm gonna start hitting deaths door.

My plan for the first mission after the catastrophe that was my very first try is: Shieldbreaker, Grave Robber, Crusader (obviously not my boy Reynauld) and an Occultist. The composition is basically one that can hit any rank hard. I locked and unholy hater on the Crusader I’ll take so that he can basically one-shot the Rapturous. Shieldbreaker is to hit any rank especially with her shard trinket as well as ignore prot, move around and hit with blight and shield herself. Crusader is the most tag of this tag team because Holy Lance will launch him into an offensive while having both healing skills in case gamble healer does bad. Occultist is to provide debuffs against the ascended brawlers and priests, with a +healing skill trinket I can rig hid healing combined with his shard trinket to protect him against the Horror snd the priests. The Grave Robber will actually be the heavy hitter because of Shadow+Lunge with one of her CC trinkets she can pull of up to 66 crit which is basically a “Come Unto your Maker” against the enemies there, with her potion buff and pick attack, she’ll pretty much be unstoppable

It worked flawlessly! No one even reached death’s door or the resolve test, they just plowed through most of the enemies without trouble and ironically Death Lash turned out to be a bigger problem than The Finger or Fate’s Reveal

Man I just finished my first try and I was 2hp from beating the boss my loadout was: Crusader Highwayman Vestal Man at Arms To add insult to injury right after coming back empty handed the Shrieker stole 6 of my trinkets so now I gotta deal with that. On the plus side I got the "What is already dead cannot die" and "Valiant Sacrifice" achievements so it wasn't a total loss.

Feels like the Grave Robber should work fine here. Purging Bleed/Blight at least the one time per battle, pierce against the boss and being a flexible 1-2 position so the Shieldbreaker fits in nicely as well. Jester on 3 and Vestal/Occu on 4 seem obvious.

Do not worry, the first level of the darkest dungeon is on par for the hardest next to the second level. My first time through was no cake walk and I had to back out once and almost lost someone my second time through, so it is natural!

I have to go in with stygian difficulty and I’m definitely bringing vestal and highwayman. There is a problem with two other party members. I have a houndmaster 2 crusaders 2 highwaymen 2 hellions a PD an occultist a GR a jester 2 bountyhunters I really need to know which two other party members would be the most safe and efficient way of tackling both the dungeon and SH. I want least risk with highest output, with the least chance of death’s door. I can take any trinket, quirks don’t matter much and I can buy any camp skill. I really need help because losing to it would be a major setback, please help, I’m on week 53 and Vvulf being a huge asshole doesn’t spawn even with a more than 36% chance, my fucking nerves are on fire

So the biggest thing is the mixing. A PD would get mixed and melted too badly. I am almost thinking a 2nd hwy saving the last one for the fourth dungeon. Occultist would be best in the 2nd dungeon. Crusader could have holy lance but may be a bit slow for this dungeon. I would be between a crusader and a bounty hunter with Mark. The biggest flaw would be 0 stress heals with the BH. It would be a safer option second hmw sound good, he is a great damage dealer and riposte will melt SH. I’m not sure about bringing a BH into first dungeon since his mark needs an additional round to place and then to hit, plus SH has two turns in one round, making mark disappear quickly so if the team comp Vestal, HMW, HMW, crusader on cocaine?

I think that would work. You have a tank, 2 heals, a stress heals and massive riposte damage.

I think the wall works better in the other 3 dungeons. Having slower heroes that rely on not being shuffled is bad for this dungeon. I worry it would take too much stress damage before the final fight and then be shuffled too much. The leper and vestal have a high probability of being useless in the final fight. You will want heroes that can be useful at any row or have great shuffle abilities.

@FU6713 this dungeon out of all them relies on speed and versatility. I'm not sure what heroes you have but often I like highwaymen and maa for riposte. I've never tried a GR but she wouldn't be terrible. Having a vestal isn't bad if other people are faster than her and can move her back. The maa and highwayman can move forward so can a crusader. I don't mind a crusader vestal here but the other two can't be slow. So I would do a highwayman with a crusader and probably leave out a maa. The last option could be grave robber, shield breaker if you have the dlc, bounty hunter would be iffy, and a hound master may not be bad due to the row versatility and ability to protect. Abominations, arbalest, abominations, antiquarians, and bounty hunters either don't have the damage or suffer from being shuffled.

You could try the jester here. Have them increase the speed and move back forth with Dirk stab/finale. You can try the wall, it just may take a while for the final fight. The leper will be the key damage dealer and getting him reliably to second position may be difficult. With some decent RNG you could melt the boss via riposte and big criticals.

Idk how you managed stress with a bounty hunter, highway man, occulist and crusader. I went in with that exact team you had and they all got too 100 stress and failed their resolve. Not 1 passed....and 2 died. hmmm

For the most part, cultist witches will have to be killed first (holy lance, riposte, pull, collect bounty) and then stun control the enemies from the cultist robe guys down to regular damage individuals. Finger of death is painful and if you can stun them every other turn as you heal is the best scenario. The campfire is also major in resetting your stress level. The only real campfire skill you need is the more melee damage onto the highwayman, the other 8 points can be stress heal and eat the maximum food. If you have books of sanity, -20% will also be huge.
