I like the Israeli bandage for emergency preparedness 👍. I’m not great with blood, particularly my own, so I’d plump for chocolate and a flask of whiskey myself… clearly not aimed at saving me, just to ease my departure 😬😳

I carry Two Israeli's... a 4" & 6". I'm a former EMT & was cross qualed as unit medic so I tend to carry more than I need. I do actually advice people to carry 1/2 - 1 pt of the strongest they can handle - presuming they CAN handle it. Great for an unexpected toothache, and wound/injury anxiety. Also a 4" Ace bandage or 2 for a sprain or strain. I'm not a big field cooker like our R.M. here, but I have a US GI stainless nested canteen cup, a generic ss cup, and a 17oz Triple Tree single wall stainless bottle canteen. I'll see how interested my "+1" is in field cooking. Now we're just Coffee, "add hot water", and civy MREs. ... Great video !!

The kitchen sink was hilarious. I dont have such a sophisticated solution but I always take a cheap round plastic bowl with me when Im camping. People laugh, but having a container that size is useful for so many things: washing, laundry, washing up, water carrying etc. I wouldnt go camping without it.

Your honesty and enthusiasm are refreshing. I watch American Bushcraft videos and it’s often too much Ooo-rah bravado. I’m not learning Bushcraft to conquer nature, but to enjoy and thrive in it. Your videos are great for that.

🏕🎥👍. 'Buy once, cry once' - buy the best quality you can afford. Love that bungalow you built & applaud your addition of a fire blanket by the cooker too👏👏👏. A SILVA sport/yachting compass was a 'must fit' for my small boat...top quality at a moderate price.

Totally fascinating. Every week I look at one of your videos and not only come away with more information/facts than I went in with, but also, I'm slowly learning a new way of thinking and looking at things. It's probably old hat to you, but for me it's absolutely fascinating. Sometimes my brain actually hurts as I look at something where you're providing a solution and I'm mentally working back the stages that make it a problem requiring a solution. Thank you so much for making these videos.

I use a 10 liter MSR water bag. It allows to carry filtered water up to the camp easily. We have a lot of cows here in the Alps. I usually start with little water just to drink, then when nearing the place to sleep, I would feel this in with cleaned water. This weekend 10 liters was perfect, for cleaning, cooking, drinking for the three of us. Shower was provided by the sky though ;)

I've always fancied a Helikon-Tex Poncho. They do make some outstanding gear. From Poland apparently, not USA. Only what I read and I may be wrong. I do like your vids and what you do. Always an education and a "hang on a minute" moment,,, "I ought to change such and such up and swap something out" 👍 Always making us think!

In no particular order. A Leatherman (Wave/Signal etc), Mora knife, Goretex rain jacket, 'vintage' '90s Silva Ranger compass (in Mils), headlamp, water resevoir in summer and stainless bottle in winter. I keep thinking about a poncho. Usually when I am caught in the rain I think about it. :)

G,day nick Like the new shack, recon I could live in something like that , looked good. Checking out your gear, basically the same as mine , all S/S and well used. Just made a bush / hobo stove out of an old S/S billy. 1item I carry due to the tyranny of distance is a Personal Locator Beacon, phone service here is pretty poor once you clear the towns, better safe than sorry. I see so many people who don't carry a map and compass, GPS is good until it dies. Tried and true I think is best All the best. Bluey

The Sea To Summit folding sink also comes in a 5L version, which I use. As you say, it's a great piece of kit, handy and versatile. Because of its tapered shape, it actually works as a sink; it's stable when full of water. The 5L model is big enough to wash pots and dishes up to about 8 inches (20cm) in diameter. To get it back in its case, twist it twice, like a figure 8 with an extra loop. The newer ones have a how-to-fold diagram printed right on the case.

For true reliability you can't beat the good old hexamine stove and tablets. I use a firebox stove and a trangia spirit burner which are both brilliant pieces of equipment, the good old hexy always comes with me as back up. As does the BCB crusader cookset because it's simply brilliant and can always be relied upon. Love the video, keep 'em coming and as always, thank you for sharing your knowledge, it's a bomb to the rest of us. 👍

Good tip about the open bandage. I stuck an axe into my left hand, across two fingers... don't ask - pretty dumb - but as I work with trees I have these types of dressings stashed everywhere. The issue that I found was that self administration with one hand was really difficult. Firstly I needed pressure on the wound, whilst swearing a lot, and then I needed to open it to dress the wound. So I managed to get the first vacuumed layer off to find another internal one which pi££ed me off as it was harder to open and extract the dressing. As it happened it did the job and also acted as a tourniquet, which I left on too long and was agony when I took the pressure off. All healed but blunt force and cutting trauma saw a broken finger masked by the laceration - Oh, by the way I don't get your glove fetish but I do like Stihl simple leather gloves but they are pants in the wet and when wet.

Hi Nick. Another brilliant and informing vid. I’m building a go to bush craft tool kit up at the moment. I recommend the Slinky, as a go to saw, as I have been using the Zubat for the past 3 or so years for my work. They now do a great folding saw in orange for easy identification against the forest floor. Hope this helps. Stay Well.

Good to see you have the tourniquet in the first aid kit. I have no doubt that with your experience you know how to use it. But I see a lot of KZbinrs listing it as an essential item when they have no first aid training. You could literally lose a limb with a poorly applied tourniquet. Maybe I should direct them your way?

love the glove idea. i use bandanas wrapped up..good prep for their next job as char-cloth. but, i tend to have singed fingers a bit. (I have nerve damage in my left arm/hand, don't feel heat as quickly as I do in my right...which means my chances for serious burns are greater. I have to be a bit more careful as a result. That extra caution has save me a world of hurt. I can honestly say that the cut/burn that caused the damage was by no means the worst thing that ever happened to me in the woods....Boy, when I digress, I go all in!) 🙂 I like that 10-liter "sink." I think I'd make a bigger pouch for it, and not stress the repacking quite so much. 🙂Agree about the blades and laplander. For the axe, I'd go for something just a tiny bit longer, if I could. But the SFA is awesome. Actually, I like all your recommendations. Even if I might lean to a different brand here or there, your logic is sound and your ability to explain is very admirable. Thanks and Greetings from the Colonies.

Hi Nick, greetings from the East of Switzerland ,great videos always useful information, as an instructor for a German/Swiss outdoor school we use a knife axe saw from Friskas as its all available from most hardware stores locally, however my personal choices are: the pathfinder cup/bottle set plus the small Vango cook set ( my MSR fits exactly in this) small knife is a Böker Arbolito and my main blade is a Mora garberg in the same sheath as you have, If i am allowed then I also carry my Lofty Wiseman survival tool but as its an improved Machette there are laws here that prevent us from openly carrying such, Hultafors hatchet or the GFB small forest axe, Silky saw, kitchen sink, rope also from local hardware store as are my leather gloves, poncho US military (make unknown) but it has the eyelets, Compas is a Suunto MC2 plus a clear map holder, backpack varies according to length of the trip and I often take a haversack (Helicon), I carry an Israeli in my pocket and the first aid (IFAK) from Tatonka and last but not least the Swiss Victorinox multi tool. Would love to get hold of a Karimor 45L pack but no luck yet but as we have national service here I am surrounded by Swiss Army surplus. Take care and stay healthy. Alpine regards Simon.

Another bottler vid Nick. 👍 Had the same MSR pot ( I think 1600ml ) around 15 years and still good as new. I’ve used it as primary crib item for work on Locomotives. Sit it in the engine room on oil cooler & tucker perfect temp every time. 😋 Have been meaning to reinvest in one for my kit so thanks for the reminder. They are near bullet-proof! Now I’m hungry for some reason…like the Seagull on the pot…ready to swoop on the next chip..🤣🤣 Laplander goes for around $55 in Aus in local h/ware, but worth every cent! Awesome cabin BTW mate…keep ‘em coming and keep up the great work! 🤝🤝👌🇦🇺

Hi Nick! First let me say that video knocked my sox off...Brilliant imo. I'm 73 and been going outdoors since I was a boy of 12-13. No TV back in the early 60's for kids so we were always outside. )) What's amazing about your video is I have most of of your key items or functionally similar(a few identical to yours). I have a Granfors Bruk small forest axe(and a Granfors Bruk camp hatchet) Stanley bottles(and nesting cups) Carbon steel Mora Garberg w/leather sheath. A carbon steel TBS Boar( its leather sheath looks just like the sheath for your HVB) My favorite cordage is a ~50ft green "flat" braided polycord that I bought 30+ years ago. Can't find any now in Montana. I love it because it's "limp" and near impossible to tangle like many similar round items that are stiffer. Great for ridge lines. I use it for hanging my food bag. We have to contend with grizzly bears here in NW Montana. NO cooking, keeping food or smelly items in your tent like in the UK :) My Corona saw with red/orange handle is about same size as yours and came from the local hardware store-$20.00. I'm prone to cutting myself. I don't have a tourniquet but I do carry several types of "clotting" items similar to those combat medics have. Probably my most prized piece of kit is my Silva Ranger Type 15 compass that I bought in the early/mid 1980's. I was going in the woods alone long before GPS's were around. My Dad served with the OSS in WWII. His OSS team spent 18 months in western China behind Japanese lines setting up a weather station in case we invaded Japan. They had to map the region to know where they were:) And they did some sabotaging Japanese of trains . He was inducted into the Explorer's Club www.explorers.org/ in New York for his work mapping the area where his OSS team operated. There were NO maps of that area when they were inserted in 1942-43. I learned compass work from my Dad :) I'm very proud of him. USGS 7 1/2 minute Topo Maps and compass was what I began with. The Ranger Type 15 is longer made but available on eBay www.ebay.com/p/659872104 The mirror makes "shooting a bearing" easy. And also handy for signaling in an emergency. Also has an inclinometer. And I have beat the hell out of it the last 35 years--still works great. I HIGHLY recommend this compass for the guys here to look at. Everyone should learn compass skills. what happens when the batteries die or you break your GPS????? Outstanding video Nick. I really like your style of presenting too. A NO BS style :) So Bravo Zulu from this old former US Navy sailor 1968-74. Sorry for such a long response but this video brought back lots of memories of camping etc. going back to childhood. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌

I bought the British army respirator bag based on your video. I bought it for my work bag. As a tree surgeon, I'm outside all year round. I take a thermos, water, wetterlings small forest axe ( strapped to the outside for wedging, occasional snedding, and fun ! ) Stanley Cup cook kit, knife/ferro + DC4, shelter ( duch army poncho is bigger than UK !, nice to have a dry place for kit and lunch ), cordage, and various other items. That's just my move around bag if I'm away from the van ( frequent ). Overall, I like it a lot. Needed a bigger molle pouch for the thermos ! Don't use your chainsaw alone. Wear ppe. Stay safe, I enjoy your videos. Rob.

Wonderful cabin. Portable sink, ingenious idea! I’ve also seen collapsible ones, I think it would too bulky. As a used to be rock climber we would climb on a dyno 9mm rope. Although your one wouldn’t have the stretch. I’ve also assailed on equivalent of a “washing line”static rope 8mm.

The item I always take with me, whether hiking, Bushcrafting, going for an afternoon wander, is my Victorinox Huntsman Swiss Army Knife, sometimes switching for my Farmer X. Just a very versatile pocket tool that I’ve used to cut hazel poles to make tent pegs and walking sticks, using the SAK to carve them, slicing veg and meat for field cooking, stirring my tea, cutting cord, plasters, tape etc. Twisting cordage, undoing knots, drilling holes, and so on. By the way the GSI or Tatonka stainless steel mug with folding handles nests perfectly with the Stanley pot, so much so that the Stanley lid fits the GSI mug as well.

excellent video! I grew up using the US GI canteen cup, ( I do live in the US after all).. It's interesting how we do not like to stray far from what we are comfortable with. The Silverfire Scout gassifier stove, and it's Chinese knock offs, nest nicely in the 0.75 L MSR pot. Another pair of my favorites. I found some collapsible dog water bowls, cheaper than camping sinks and still hold water! Good solid choices and, as I said, an excellent video.

Great to see your most trusted gear items, it's always interesting to see the gear of the pros, I'm not a pro haha 😂, but I have my favourites to I have a small scouts axe which fits nicely into my molly bag, I prefer to use a southeastern bolo, but here in UK the sight and carrige of anything resembling a machete, is going to raise alarm bells, so I never bring it back to the 🇬🇧 I have a much loved hacking knife, covers most tasks except for whittling, my cooking kit is a very average and cheap aluminium pot with lid that can be found in most markets in and around South East Asia, it takes the knocks and weighs very little, my tarp is my signature,,, haha see it know it and you will know its me haha

If you're looking for very tough gloves I recommend Kinco. I've used the thicker, insulated ones for winter construction and the lighter ones for shooting and they're great. Dexterity is limited in the insulates ones but that are indestructible.

Just a tip to stop the knife falling out ... from ranger survival and field craft ... put an inner tube under the top part of the belt clip. Wrap it around the knife handle. Should shop it falling out.

Spot on video Nick, all the bread n butter covered! The cabin is outstanding what a build that is. Nice rifle n scope not an SLR or a bolt action is it a .22 with mag? Its amazing the equipment you have gathered over the years and i can confirm even though you are based in the stunning Chew Valley with those limestone rivers and wild brown trout and i am in Glasgow but the Cairngorms were my place, i am chuffed to say i have almost all the same gear lol the Kelly Kettle, soldier 2000 MTP backpack, companion knife 20 years old. Loving the channel.

Brilliant video. I would spoil myself with a tin opener to reduce the chance of minor cuts. And a lightweight flourescent jacket with a whistle in case you want to be found by Search n Rescue. But this video does make me realise that I have plenty of First Aid items but.....other than plasters, I don't really know how to use them properly. Maybe you could make a video about using a First Aid pack.

Highly recommend the wide-mouth Klean Kanteen 40oz/1.1L canteen. Nests nicely in my cup and plenty of water for me and the dogs on a short walk in the woods.

I was gifted a Bahco orange saw but love my green models, I did add orange thong though. Love all you gear, it will all last a long long time. With paracord I keep it in pre-cut strands due to the cost; that way I can reuse it over and over without having a ton of odd lengths. Do you have a video on that compass lanyard? I've never seen such concept before.

Hi Nick, an other great video. However, I'm alwais hearing that the current Siva is not the proper old Silva quality. I use Suunto compasses. As well I use the sea to sumit map case, it seals realy tight (you have to breathe on the zip lock stile opening hen it's not about 25 c) its a greate map case so far. Ps. The kitchen sink from s to s is great to cool you drinks. In som lake or stream water! ;)

Another used I found for the sea to Summit sink is an emergency rain hat. I've stopped using knives to scrape Ferro rods as research shows that most of them have some sort of toxic metal in them plus our young friend was testing his children's toys with a LEAD tester kit and his ferro rod showed up positive . Since I may use my knife to gather a cooking stick or other food processing I avoid the posable cross contamination. . I found the best scraper for ferro rods is a carbide paint scraper blade and it can also be used in an emergency for sharpening your knife.

Nice show and tell there Nick I’ve been thinking 🤔 about getting me a Bahco to replace my Fiskars cause I won’t cut like it use to anymore even after it got sharpened, so now you brought it up I looked them up didn’t know there were difference in the Bahco saws 🪚 that orange 🍊 one 396-JT you said, I see it only cuts green wood 🪵 and the on you have 396-LAP it says it cuts greenwood soft/ hard dry wood , plastic , and bone 🦴 I think I’ll Take my chance on the one have. The prices on them are different the JT is $22.77 and the LAP is $32.66 on Amazon you pay 💰 for what you get. My homework was easy thanks Nick 😂👍👌✌️🪚🇺🇸

Awesome video and I am happy I share a lot of your gear choices but if I may pose a question. When you mentioned the Helikon poncho the video showed you in a hammock. I’ve never seen it but it has me thinking. Can one make poncho into hammock?

Still have most of my issue kit, but have you tried any of the dd stuff, been using their tarp for a few years now, great bit of kit! Can't fault you on the axe or the saw, had both now for years, just think the silky are way overpriced, too many gear junkies!

What do you reckon to the DD Poncho Tarp? I hold it in high regard myself. I have had the MSR pot for ages, but these days I use the Trangia 25 cookset, it has everything you need. The crusader for roughing it, I agree with that. Stanley? who is he?
