Having planted a broadleaf woodland in 2017 which is now maturing beautifully we’ve got lots of Hogweed growing and I’m having great difficulty in identifying it with the giant hogweed. I’ll be watching closely as to how big it grows as I’m unsure looking at the stems. Am I right in thinking that the giant hogweed has purple coloured spots?

I always found feather sticks to be a bit time consuming and high effort. I simply make wood shavings and collect them in my jacket for fire starting from the timber I could make feather sticks from. I don't really see the advantage of feather sticks but maybe you can explain?

Rather than cutting something off, wouldn’t it be better (for the tree) to scrape the bark to see if it’s fat wood?

The ragwort at the end looks more like rough hawk’s-beard, crepis biennis, as much too wirey for ragwort.

What a great piece of kit. I like the idea of having it centered on my base town as I live on the cusp of two OS maps which is really annoying. Bet it's a few quid though, but if you include a £20 map case I guess it would balance out.

isaw a garden rescue episode once. the family wanted their kids to be involved gardening and growing edible, so tha's was cool, they planted all sorts of berries, can't remember, but them they made a hedge of taxus around it with pretty red berries once a year and well a 2 year old doesn't know the difference i reckon

Not sure if folk still read these, but thank you Nick. It is not so much the hypervigilance that has stopped me staying out overnight, but the fear of not wanting to come back in to the world. But, my sister has a small patch of land that she calls a garden and I shall be going to north wales this weekend with my tarp and hammock to sleep out in her garden so that I dont lose contact with my real life. You’ve been an inspiration

All great but i feel this content is dated, the rucsac is top notch granted - but this kits is weighted G10 standard issue- as weight is a major condideration, maybe lighter ancillaries would be of some use. No weight on back means no weight on the knees. After living in a tent and out of a rucsac for a year i pretty much got my necesities down too fluid, food, clean/dry feet and sleeping dry, warm & comfy...to a tee, seen many a man dump kit to reduce weight - besides this, the video is very good.

I did exactly what you preach the very first time I entered the "woods". After getting out of that bush, I immediately created a fool proof method of never ever getting lost in the bush. I said to myself: "Don't you ever dare do that again !!!" And so I never went back to that bush ! However, I created navigation systems years later, sun, magnetic many types of compass, BUT THAT BUSH WALK STILL HAUNTS ME and I will stay out of it. I try to listen to people like you and those that go to the Amazon jungle, for a fool proof method, or atleast a guaranteed escape plan like having a homing pigeon in my rucksack !

A great tutorial for a beginner like me. I subscribed because you used Fan Dabby Dozy. I'm putting together a fishing and hunting display for a living history group that I'm part of. Learning about making cordage for fishing nets brought me here. It looks like it'll be a fairly small fishing net.

Try getting some dry sand and putting it in the coals where you are going to set your canteen cup. Dry dirt will work although not as well. The idea is to give your cup a bit of a cushion from the direct heat. There is plenty of heat anyway. I have cooked whole hogs in this way by basically putting out the fire so that there is no smoke rising at all. There is plenty of heat in there to cook the meat after sealing up the top well to stop the heat from escaping. I usually put about a foot of sand on top of a piece of tin over the hole and effectively making an oven.

The tarp is probably the superior option IF you know what you're doing. The tent is just a tent, no more no less.

Use one half of the lavvu to wrap your gear in, making a horseshoe/hobo pack. Now you don’t need a backpack. Next, drape the other half over your haversack/musette bag to be handy as a rain poncho. Now you don’t need seperate rain gear. Finally, make a center pole that doubles as a walking stick, preferably inspired by scout staffs for maximum versatility. Now you don’t need to pack centerpole. The old school gear trades weight for versatility. The right way to do it, I think 🙂

I should like to ask Nick this. If someone just `very lightly` brushed against either Hemlock or Monkshood, are they doomed? I ask as in North America there is a fungus `Fiery Coral` and in South America a species of Hairy caterpillar of whom just the slightest skin contact can be fatal. Are Hemlock and Monkshood like that? Just the slightest touch and the `victim` is doomed beyond hope?

Some people get a bad reaction to garden parsnip sap (a relative of hemlock) so I would take care generally with that whole plant family..( apiaceae).

Might be the best tarp video on the internet. Well done, mate. However, one thing I always question is putting the tarp over the ridge line, because I'm worried friction wear wear down the inside of the tarp. As opposed to have the tarp secured under the ridgeline with the guy-lines. Pro/cons of doing it either way, of course.

Dropping some Vets off after a Bushcraft class I spotted an old lady on the pavement [outside her home, with daughter about to take her out]. Her forearm was broke [dangling down], I jumped in to the back of my van and dug out a homemade sycamore Spatula and an old FFD to bandage it, amazing how much more at ease she was once it was supported and 'looking' normal again!
