It's recently been confirmed that the Gravemind doesn't have an actual head. What we see in Halo 2 was a tentacle altered and reformed into a mouth to address his captives directly. After he sent them away, he returned it to normal. Being a Precursor, the Gravemind still retains the ability to alter his appearance and, of course, speak telepathically.

In the Cortana and Gravemind moments in Halo 3, there are a few biblical references. Fascinating. Edit: I'm more obsessed with the voice two years later. It's so powerful and yet soothing... Well the story of the humans and forerunners shares some similarities with the story of Cain and Abel. The Precursors(God) favored Abel (humans) over Cain(Forerunners), and thus Cain turned against God, and his brother.

Yes, the Logic Plague for Cortana is the only way to salvage the story. The best way would be if it isn't entirely Cortana, but merely a leftover fragment of her that allows the other logic-plague-infested AI (possibly composed Didact or Warden Eternal?) to wear her face and ape her personality. That would be the best direction because it would change the story from a Skynet-style conversion to a more infection-like abomination that is more tormenting to Chief. It would give him a motive to fight and destroy the monster, for really personal reasons. Especially if he was forced to watch her undergo a virtual flood-style infection, and be assimilated with other AI into a virtual proto-gravemind (mirroring Captain Keyes' fate). This would be so shocking and sickening, and would make the villain of Halo 6 as evil and despicable as possible.

I think amalgamation is more disgusting. To see her become a puppet isn't nearly as awful to watch as seeing her consumed and assimilated into an AI-gravemind. For the finale, the villain needs to be as evil as possible, so that Chief enters the final battle battle with the mindset of 'I will never see my friend again, but that no longer matters. All that matters now is that you will be dead!' Cortana's death in Halo 4 was well-done, and it shouldn't be spoiled by resurrecting her in any way. Her character in Halo 6 should be a cannibalized fragment infested with the flood. That way, we keep the sadness from Halo 4, and feel no hesitation to kill her (again?) in Halo 6.

PLEASE keep making these! The Flood are a big part of what made Halo what it is(was), and though their removal from the story was necessary to bring the original trilogy to a close, neglecting to reintroduce them for so many games straight was a BIG mistake gameplay-wise IMO. Halo games without the flood in there somewhere just don't feel like Halo at all. Let's not even get started on armor enhancements.

I'm pretty sure most Halo rings have life on them already. Halo CE was originally meant to have wild life on it, like how Halo: Reach had the Moa's and those big... whatever the hell those big guys with the tusks are. The flood infection forms that escaped containment must have infected the local life and formed a proto-gravemind. It probably would've taken longer to build a full gravemind, as they didn't have any intelligent life to infect, as far as we know. The majority of their intelligence would have had to come through normal learning, until it could access the memories of it's oldest flood forms that were in captivity, so it could know the previous gravemind's knowledge.

So a thought on this. When play through awakening the nighmare, the gravemind you face is incredibly massive, but kind of gives the impression of being somewhat simplistic in it's strategy, there's a lot of enemy coming at you, but it doesn't show any real strategy. Would this be because most of the biomass it gathered after the breach of high charity was just the arcs ambient non-sentient wildlife? I'd suppose a gravemind composed less intelligent life would be less intelligent, right?

i think that cortana being infected would be such good story arcing and it would make her sacrifice in halo 4 all the more tragic as it was likely her last sane, individual decision, she did wait 4 years and seven months after being tortured from the gravemind, and then she was revived from the domain now she is an infected immortal ai with control over the galaxy, it's pretty good writing(or fan theory lol) but i think she plans to release the flood as she believes the ai's will be unaffected by a flood outbreak, ultimately winning her war on sentient life forms. if that's true then halo 6 could be the best story in the series.

Random theory, maybe a fully evolved key mind/flood being, becomes a precursor. And it just makes a cycle of the creation of other sentient life to create food for its continuation as a species. And the tech used in the halo rings was also used to kill the precursors as well as the flood which are just non evolved precursors. Once the flood get control cover space time etc. They can use their influence over space time to create sentient life/ drag it in from a separate time to repopulate the galaxy they consumed. Creating a paradox loop of constantly dying and feeding flood.

One thing you left out: A Gravemind can manipulate space, much like the precursors. Recall when The Halo 2 Gravemind is able to pull Chief and Arbiter into the same room, then release them into different locations. The Forerunner Saga says that at a certain point, the Flood was more powerful than the Precursors were, which makes sense since they went from hunting the Precursors down to extinction to being the extinct(endangered imo).

They're basically the same exact thing but the presentation is what makes them unique. The Flood is not so well designed, but better conceptualized - the Necromorphs are shoddily conceptualized but very well designed.

Mid state of the evolution. •Halo Wars 2: The banished encounters a Protogravemind in the late state of this evolution before turning into a full Gravemind, believed to be the remains of the last Gravemind of High Charity. •Halo 2: The Gravemind, seen by Chief, Cortana and Arbiter, this is the culmination of the previous evolutions of the proto, the full Gravemind is capable of coordinate vehicles, pure forms and massive deployment of flood forces, capable of negotiations and convince other species to join forces. •Halo 3: Early version of a Keymind, because of the Biomass the flood consumed from High Charity, the Gravemind began his transformation to the third state, interstellar tier and proto-keymind. Halo Legends: Keymind, most dangerous state of the flood outbreak. Halo ???: It’s believed that multiple Keymind can create a super version, but never encountered save for the Forerunners in the last stand of the war.

Good lord, imagine if the next few games were about a new war against the flood. Keyminds, various species and factions working together (with Cortana too), and combat against the flood in its late interstellar stage, nearing its intergalactic stage. I can imagine the end of the final game having The Master Chief fighting through an infestation on the ark, being telepathically abused by the flood using logical combat against him. He then fires the rings, including one near the Ark placed to get rid of the infestation. He dies, and the galaxy is repopulated by the species that have evacuated to a safe distance. The epilogue shows the repopulation of the galaxy, the unity between species, and a narration by Cortana, who concludes that the mantle of responsibility does not belong to a single group or species, but that it belongs to all living things. It then cuts to a memorial to John-117, the savior of the galaxy. Banners are flown around with his image. His armour is put on display. If the final game was completed on legendary, a scene plays where a family is looking around a museum dedicated to the Chief. They then look at a display that features a hologram of him without armour. His face is completely visible. Holy shit, the feels. THE FEELS.

The flood would definitely win it could likely infect a single individual and be able to gain control of the hive mind wether that be through mental torture or the logic plague and cause the borg to go insane and taking control of a single borg ship would allow it to infect entire planets without worry and flood spores would also infect them at a massive rate by just breathing in flood supercells will infect

Pyroskies that would be interesting especially with Nurgle and his followers. The Imperium can destroy an entire planet within an hour, however if the flood infected them...then the flood could as well.

Well, they can already out-eat the Nids (Nids take 50-100 days to consume an entire planet, the Flood do that shit for a weekend project), so there's that. I'm honestly not sure how well they'd do against the Orks or Necrons though.

A big question would be, if they can pierce through Space Marine armor? On one hand, it's probable as the Infection forms probably had to deal with forerunner armor (That may have been tougher then Spartan armor) and can only be stopped by shields. However, Space marine armor is shown to be much superior when compared to Spartan armor as they can tank hits from Bolter rounds (being rocket propelled grenades) for a short while, essenically being damn hard for Infection forms to pierce through. Tho I supposed that combat forms could break appart the armor, and considering the large population density of each planet, it'd be easy for the flood to over-run Astartes with just 1 planet completely infected.

I love the flood, they were actually created by the precursors as a test to other beings, such as the forrunners to see if they could handle the mantle of responsibility. I love halo lore !
