*I'm always happy to point you in the right direction regarding questions about Adobe Captivate. If you need more than a simple question answered, you can purchase a one-hour one-on-one session with me at **bit.ly/Cp1on1**. If you only use some of that time, that's okay. You can bank any unused time (15-minute increments) for future sessions. For example, if you use 30 minutes, you can use 30 minutes later.*

Hi Paul. Thanks again for your valued in-depth response. Reaching out to Adobe as suggested. In the meantime, is it possible to only display the next button once the user has hovered over all of the hover areas I have created on screen. I used the Hint option to create hovers. I want ensure the learner has hovered over all the indicated areas I have incorporated ion the screen. Once they have hovered over all of them the next button should appear. I would like to achieve this without using variables. I don not know if this is possible. But thanks again for your help.

Not possible to track without variables and a hover cannot trigger an advanced action. Keep in mind that hover effects are not considered the best way to have an interaction because of this but also because it excludes being used on devices that don't use a mouse like smartphones and tablets. Better to use click to reveals.

Hey Paul, quick question. When I create my advanced action, following what you demo in the video, I run into an issue. When I save the advanced action, it saves, and I get the script updated box. Captivate then automatically deletes the variable (button name) from the increment command line in both the IF box and ELSE box which renders the action useless. Why does this keep happening? What am I missing? For full transparency, my advanced action contains the following actions: Jump to Slide, Change State Of, Show and Increment. Do I have a fatal combination here that keeps deleting the variable for the Increment command?
@CaptivateTeacher

I'm not sure what's happening in your specific case, but if you delete an object that is referenced in your advanced action, you will likely break any references to those objects. If you need help troubleshooting this and other issues you can reach out to adobe through captivatehelp@adobe.com.

Hi Paul, thanks for all your content! It's been a huge help as I'm learning Adobe Captivate 2019, release 11.8.0.586. I recently used this video to help me create a click to reveal slide with a hidden next button that appears after all buttons have been clicked. It worked perfectly! My question - can I do two click to reveal slides in the same project? I'm assuming I just need to create new advanced actions to execute but, what's throwing me off, is that I copied from my original project. Even though I renamed the buttons, the advanced actions on that new, pasted slide still works. The 2nd, pasted slide does not work. I thought I'd ask before going too far down the rabbit hole. Thanks for your help! UPDATE: I found your video about duplicating slides with advanced actions and variables and have since made two click to reveal slides that work. I did not rename any objects this time, and I noticed that my variables copied this time! I'm assuming the changed object names from my first try are what stopped me? I'm now working on creating a slide with flip buttons and hoping to utilize this video to keep my NEXT button from showing up, though I'm not sure how all those shared actions are going to work with flipping AND a next button.
@CaptivateTeacher
@CaptivateTeacher 2 жыл бұрын
The key is not to duplicate but to copy your slide that's working to a new project. No need to relabel everything as Captivate will do this for you, and then simply copy and paste it into the target project. Not only will your variables, advanced actions, and objects get relabeled to maintain uniqueness but everything will work fine. Hey Paul - I have a few courses with a similar setup on a few slides. For some reason, the next button visibility doesn't persist when the course is reloaded. In other words, if I close the course without completing it, relaunch it, and navigate to a slide that had the next button shown previously, it is no longer visible and I have to review all the content again. Have you found any methods for maintaining the visibility of the shape/button when the user reopens the course?
@CaptivateTeacher

In instances where you expect learners to exit and relaunch your elearning, you will need to add an advanced action to the On Enter action of your slide. This advanced action will check the value of the variables used for this type of slide. If the values indicate that the user has already clicked all the items, you can show the Next button.

Hi Paul: I'm wondering if you could help me figure out an issue I have with hiding the next button on two slides in a Compliance course I am working on. The content owners for this training do not want users to skip the slides that contain links to two external videos. NOTE: I cannot embed the videos in the course; I can only link to them. Is there a way or an advanced action that can be created to prevent users from clicking the Next button before they have watched the external videos? Because the videos are outside the course, perhaps, there is no way I can prevent this. I have watched a few of your "hide next button" videos that use advanced actions and change state of, etc., but haven't found a tutorial that would help with this. Any advice or feedback would be great!
@CaptivateTeacher
@CaptivateTeacher 4 жыл бұрын
The best you can do is make the button click to the video mandatory before displaying the next button. There is no way you can be sure if they have actually watched an external video. Even if you ran a time delay equal to the length of the video, which I wouldn't recommend, there is still no guarantee that Joe employee isn't just texting with his girlfriend.

The buttons in this interaction trigger one of the several states within a multi-state object. Each state contains a different description that explains that example. Once you press a button the multi-state object is changed to the corresponding state that contains the description needed to be displayed.

I however have a problem: I have a Next-button on the master page of the Captivate-template that I am using and this button is automatically displayed after 3 seconds on each slide. I've tried to override this button by placing a Next-button of my own on the slide where the customer has asked that the user should click through 8 buttons before being able to click next, but so far I haven't been successful... Do you have any suggestions as to how I could solve this?

Personally I'm not a fan of forced delayed navigation but I recognize that this is something stakeholders want, as you can see in this video. How I achieve this is based on the content on the slide. If I'm building a non interactive slide when content is merely animated on the slide, I will place my navigation objects toward the end of each slide but on a slide by slides basis. Persistent buttons like my Previous slide button I would put on the Master Slides but not a Next slide button.

Hi Paul, thanks that was quite helpful in how to make concise advanced actions. If you have not done a video on using Shared Actions yet, people may find this insightful. I have 2 queries for your consideration: 1. Making a single custom Play/Pause button which functions like the one on the Playbar, which shows the "pause" icon while the slide is playing, and then changes to the "play" icon at the end of a slide (where there is a pause point). 2.An older problem: If there is a retake and review button on the quiz results page, when the user fails the quiz and then reviews the quiz, the retake button disappears. I normally put the review button on top of the retake button, as they are the same size - however this may not always be the case. One may not necessarily also want to go to another slide which has one button to counteract this anomaly, do you have any suggestions for this? For question 2 I would have though the logic for Captivate would have been a checkbox option in Preferences > Pass or Fail > If Failing Grade - to say "Hide Review Button". Your vid "Change the Buttons on the Quiz Results Slide" does explain your viewpoint on the review button so I understand how you feel about it though.

I’ve only used shared actions a handful of times. I certainly see their benefits but I’ve also seen how if you don’t properly label and set them up just right, you can waste as much time tweaking them as the time they save. I’d like to get a bit more proficient with their use before I make a video. It would be a topic I would want to get right. I also believe that there is a time to use them and there is a time where they may not be applicable as well. With regards to your first inquiry, I have contemplated this one a few times. My current solution only accounts for the user clicking on the button to change its appearance through a multi-state object. I haven’t dedicated much time to it as I haven’t had much need for my own *Play/Pause*. Here is what I would suggest…. I would explore the possibility of setting up your *pause* and *continue* actions through *advanced actions*. This way, just before the pause you could also *Change State of* your multi-state *Play/Pause*. I think that might work. _Hmmm…maybe I will do a video on this idea_. I haven’t explored it because I’m swamped right now finishing some work for clients and getting ready for *DEVLEARN 2016*, but let me if you try this approach and it works. Alternatively you may want to download one of the templates from the *eLearning Brothers*. I know they have several navigation templates. You could look at their *advanced actions* and see if their solution accounts for this. I just now became aware of the second issue. You see, as you pointed out, I’m not a fan of allowing users to simply review a final test so they can turn around and pass the test through memorization. I want my learners to come to their knowledge through discovery and proper learning, _but hey, that’s just me_. I’m not sure if this is a bug or just the way Adobe has setup this set of features to work. I would submit it as a feature request or report it as a bug (_whichever you think it is_) through the *Adobe eLearning Community*: elearning.adobe.com/ Look for the green button labelled *Bug/Feature Request* on the right hand side of the page.

Good Day, I am working on a Demo for a government agency. I have been able to do the "Hide/Show" Next button, no problem. I am pretty knowledgable about Storyline and was able to pick up these advanced actions fairly quickly with the help of your videos. My problem is that when i go through the HTML5 preview, even if I click the area where the hidden next button is located, it still goes to the next slide. I found this out because the first half of my template has no actions, so I was just clicking Next to get to the slide i wanted to test. hOWEVER, when I clicked, by accident, the area where the 'hidden' next button is located on an advanced action slide, it still advanced to the next slide. Is it maybe because I am using an actual button then a smartshape? Not really sure what I am dong wrong. I even tried Enable vs. Disable, Different States, etc. but everytime I click the area where the 'hidden' button is located, it advances.. Any suggestions? i know the gov't wants the student to select all advanced actions (Tabs, etc.) before advancing through. This may just be a clitch we have to work with and hope notbody 'accidently' selects that area. I will continue to do research, but any pointing me in the proper direction would be appreciated. @@CaptivateTeacher Version we have is 11.5.1.499. I will talk to our management to see if we can update. Updating software can only be done by IT, which can take days, if not weeks. I am going to try some other ways. I currently have it so each Tab, hotspot, etc has an a variable/advanced action (Conditional (If/Else) where I increment the tab by 1 and it only shows the Next button if all tabs are not equal to 0). This works fine as far as showing the button, but as I stated if you click in the area where the Next button is located, even if it isn't showing, it still advances the slide. I know Storyline has disabled states, but not sure if Captivate does. I am gong to try several other methods to see if I can lock the navigation Thanks.

What I have found is that if the reason for the update is because it has a cool new feature they will be slow to update you, however if you claim that the software contains bugs and possible security holes they will patch it much more quickly.

Hi Mr Paul. Congrats. I think you are doing a gret job sharing your knowlege whit us, the teachers that want to do a better job. I have a little question for you. I have tried to find a solution for that case, creating a variable named "Cont" that is incremented by 1 when the Next arrow button is activated. "Cont" is in 3 decision statements. In each decision I use the conditional "If" like this: 1. For the first decision (first text caption): If (Cont ==1) Then (Cont = Cont +1; Show TextCaption1; Hide TextCaption2; Hide TextCaption3). 2. For the Second decision (second text caption): If (Cont ==2) Then (Cont = Cont +1; Show TextCaption2; Hide TextCaption1; Hide TextCaption3). 3. For the third decision ( third text caption): If (Cont >=3) Then (Cont = 3; Show TextCaption3; Hide TextCaption1; Hide TextCaption2). The issue is: When I click for first time on the Next Arrow Button, "Cont" counts untill 3 and does not capture the event when I click on the button for second time. Thanks Teacher.

Paul - This tutorial was tremendous, and worked perfectly every time I applied it to my Captivate projects. Just one question. When I make a slide and there is only ONE button, and I need the user to click that one button before the custom "next" button appears, it doesn't work. What normally happens is either the next button doesn't show up, OR you have to click the button twice in order for the next button to appear. Any idea why? It only happens when there is one item to click on per slide. If there are 2 or more, it works perfectly! Thanks in advance, great tutorials!!

If you only have one button you would not need a conditional action. Create a standard action to display the Next button and perform whatever action you want the first button to perform.

Paul: I love your tutorials. In fact this one was the perfect solution to a course I'm working on currently. Where you have 5 states, I have 7, but otherwise the circumstances are almost exactly the same. My additional question now is this: I have audio (narration) attached to each state as well as on the launch slide. How do I keep users from clicking the "state change" buttons until the audio on the launch slide is completed? My tests allow both the new state audio and original launch slide video to play at the same time. I don't have enough experience with scripting to figure this one out myself. UPDATE: I found your tutorial on multistate audio. I am using the stop slide audio check box now. However I turned off all my button pauses in the timeline because that is how yours look in that second tutorial. It isn't quite what I want as now I have to run the slide length out forever to keep it from auto advancing to the next one. I'm a little afraid to do much more experimenting at this point. I am in dire need of advice! (Captivate 2017) Adrianne
@CaptivateTeacher

My rule of thumb with pause points is to have them on items that would take you to another slide, such as a back button, but keep all the buttons that change the states of another object on your side without pauses. You have to remember that buttons with pauses can also continue playing a slide when pressed so no pause means no unpause. You could write an advanced action that is run on entry that first *disables* the click to reveal buttons. Then *Delay Next Action by* X seconds and then *enable* the buttons. So even if they click, nothing happens until the audio is finished. Might anger your learners though, especially if they arrive on the slide a second time to review the material. Forced navigation is often requested by our stakeholders but whenever possible I prefer to allow my learners to be autonomous and self directed.

@@CaptivateTeacher So - your solution for the audio was perfect - I managed to script it properly on the first try. Now my only remaining issue is the pause problem. I think there is something about pause that is escaping my understanding. In my original email, I mentioned that I had to set the slide length ridiculously long to keep the auto advance from happening before my reader could get through all 7 states. I have the pause on the Next button set shortly after the conditions are all met to show the Next button but it doesn't pause. Should I be setting the pause out later? What is best practice?
@CaptivateTeacher
@CaptivateTeacher 5 жыл бұрын
The slide might have played past the pause point by the time you make the Next button appear. Put the pause on the back button or if there isn't a back button, I will sometimes place a click box somewhere on the slide, small and invisible with no action so the likelihood of someone clicking it is next to impossible. Then you slide only needs to be as long as it needs to be. Keep the pause on the Next button though. Once it's visible you still want the Next button to wait until the learner clicks it.

Variables are simply storage for data. You can trigger the change of those values through some type of interaction, a button or text entry box. The answer is yes but it depends on what you want to do with it.

Hey there Paul, Thank you so much for all the videos you create! I'm currently working on a course that has an animation of a card flipping to the back when the user clicks on it (learned the animation effect from one of your videos btw). The slide is designed to prompt users to click on all cards to see the information on the back before proceeding to the next slide. I'm having difficulty with the automatic advancement though so I wanted to reach out to seek your expertise with this. Currently each card has an advanced action for the animation. Would the best solution in this case be to create 2 separate advanced actions for each card? I had originally had the advanced action for the advancement on the slide itself but it doesn't appear to be working. I'm still so new with Captivate so I apologize if there's an easier fix for this! Any direction or help would be so greatly appreciated. :) -Madison

On each advanced action use a variable to track which items have been click. For example Assign v_Button1 with the literal value of 1. Create a second tab on all your advanced actions that checks if v_button1, 2 , 3, etc are equal to 1 and then display the Next button to allow them to more forward.
