So, I used to be huge into geocaching. There are times where you could find yourself in somewhat sensitive areas. Not illegal, not trespassing, but certainly looking suspicious while trying to find a cache. To the point where you could be questioned about what you are doing (perfectly legal and, in my case, any time I was asked by authorities, it resulted in a positive interaction. YMMV). Wearing jeans, a flannel shirt, work boots, was standard. I would also sometimes wear a high vis vest, and carry a clipboard. This worked GREAT in larger cities. Never once questioned-or even looked at. If I was, on the clipboard, I actually had some printouts about geocaching-so that, in the event I was questioned, I could explain AND hand them a flyer. In more rural settings, this doesnt work so well, as this isnt a normal sight (I live rurally, and someone in a high vis vest is either a town worker, or a solicitor-and is immediately noticed). Also, the way you carry yourself helps as well. If you LOOK busy, people dismiss you. Walk with a purpose. This was a tactic I learned years ago, from a buddy in SF who went through spy school. Always look like you are in a hurry, and that you are important. Human nature is to dismiss those who look like they are purposeful. They belong, in our society. We notice those who look adrift, or lost, or unsure. We notice those who are TOO aggressive (running, physically parting crowds, etc). We DONT pay particular attention to those who are purposeful. It playing on our psychology.

I actually saw cops do the construction vest thing. I noticed for like three days the same dude in a high vis park on my street and set up one of those surveying scope things, hang around for a few minutes then leave. Turns out the building across the intersection was a meth lab and he was taking pictures of who was coming and going. The only reason I noticed is cuz my landlord made me walk off the property to smoke and our timings just lined up so that I saw the same guy do the same thing three days in a row.

Good call on the clipboard. I can say as a guy that works construction, if a dude isn't a tradesman guys on site will spot it immediately. Construction workers are typically on the lookout for safety, inspectors, and engineers, and most become pretty decent judges of whether a guy belongs on site or is a "visitor".

I live in one of cities you showed by a lake. I can tell you what we tested to maximum effect. Bought a 3 D leaf suit, largest size. We spray painted the legs in different shades of grey, less than 50. We were able to hide right in a crowd with nearly everyone thinking it was a security potted plant. Even police walked by, within feet, not paying any attention. The few who did stop, struggled to figure outwhat they were looking at. The larger suit size eliminated all shape when crouched or kneeling. Which was the easiest way to move openly without anyone noticing. Standing, not so much. It was funny though.

I once didn’t want to draw attention, what I would do was wear dirty clothes, dirty work boots, went unshaven and and adopted a bit of a shuffling walk while looking somewhat downward. I was invisible and many of the people who looked like they may be up to no good would actually avoid me. An oversized dirty torn up Carhart will provide you the ability to conceal other items. Another thing that makes you invisible is a beat up small truck with rakes and shovels sticking up out of the back. People are so used to semi-shady lawn maintenance private businesses. Everyone assumes you are broke in everything but bark dust and assume you’ll try to sell them a crappy lawn mower and avoid you. When choosing a normal everyday vehicle get a cheap common car in a common color. Never put stickers or other identifying markings on it. An assortment of magnets may be useful though. By the way, never underestimate the awesome power of a nice aluminum clipboard and or a counter. If you look like you know what your doing with a clipboard you can be in almost any decent clothes and as long as every few minutes you look at your clipboard for a few seconds look up frown, look at the clipboard and take off walking you can go almost anywhere. Add in a laminated ID (even if it’s a picture of a chimpanzee and says bikini inspector) on a lanyard or from a pocket clip, and some keys on one of those retractable clips and I’m pretty sure you could walk to anywhere unchallenged. If you are challenged though (by a non authority) ask their name, check an imaginary list on page two mutter “damnit” then look up and ask them if they’ve seen a tall thin bald man in blue “Enviro-mesh Solutions” shirt (enviro-anything gets you cred with the left, something mesh implies blue collar and solutions sounds private businessy which gets you cred with the right). If it is a cop, quickly ask directions and say your looking for 703B Division or 523 Main (there is always a Division and a Main) so you can meet the manager to discuss magnetic door locks. Always talk fast but confidently and ask the time give the impression you are late, remember you are not nervous you’re late, lost, and are probably going to loose the costumer. If the cop knows it’s a bad address check the clipboard and say “damnit... a simple not interested would save everyone time” then ask directions to you car and leave the area

I once read in a spy book that if you’re being surveilled while walking in a commercial setting.Using large glass windows to see if being targeted including keeping an eye on your target.Pick your nose because it gives the illusion that you don’t realize you’re being watched. One thing works wonderfully if you don’t wanna be bothered while on surveillance work or with a coworker that relies on you to do all the work and take credit for. Before the shift starts have a nice spicy fish burrito with a partial to a full can of Pinto beans. Nobody will be able to stay in the same area YOU. Including YOU! This worked better than I ever imagine. Needless to say I told the coworker if he gives me any crap he will smell it.Ha ha ha

Comment on construction workers: engineers, and other office dwellers wear shiny hi viz vests over clean office clothes when they visit construction sites once per year. They also loiter around being useless and nosey, trying to justify their presence. If asked, you're doing an insurance survey and your boss didn't tell you who's the client or what's the scope because you got pulled off a different project last minute. If you care, look up your city's public works project roster and rattle off real projects.

An addition to this video I would add stand/sit at a bus stop. You have an unquestionable reason to be there. A sheltered seating bus stop is best because passer-bys only register the sides and not the person inside. Two videos I would recommend your developing are: 1. Analyzing the constructed flows of foot and vehicle traffic in cities and towns. Assess how traffic is channeled, impeded, and forced to move faster. Where are spikes used to inhibit loitering? 2. Analyze where the homeless sleep. Everyone focuses on the tent cities and under bridges. Most of these inhabitants are men. Women have a security issue and either have a man or a hiding spot. I watched a woman check bushy areas in back of stores. The gaps between building, cyclone fence barriers, and between zones like highways and businesses , have a lot of concealment sites.

One thing I think is worth mentioning is dazzle style camouflage. Highly contrasting angular lines can make it difficult to identify not only your form, but more importantly, your movement. Most shots at moving targets require the ability to anticipate where your target is going to be. Dazzle "camouflage" is particularly good at messing up that ability to anticipate.

Another useful tool I think perhaps you'd like, is just wearing clothes under your clothes. I did this as a younger man and only had to use it once and but it worked! I would wear a hat, plane white tee, and basketball shorts under every outfit. I got acclimated to the extra heat caused by the extra clothes. Within less then 20 secs I could remove my outer shirt, pants, and hat. Stuff em in a bush or behind a dumpster and be a new person. Also. To add another reason to always have a undershirt, I have used shirts countless times to apply pressure to wounds. If I ever needed to I could make a sling or tourniquet. I used my extra T as rope, fire starter, toilet paper. Everything. Useful to have a rag for free.

I think the reflective vest thing is more for operational camouflage and the opportunities that affords a team (ie being able to halt traffic at a given intersection or gaining less suspicious access to infrastructure) vs e&e camouflage or individual camoflauge. That being said, such operational camouflage would also involve the use of other more elaborate "props" such as a worktruck, sawhorses or road safety cones as well.

Anyone wearing military style camouflage clothing in a densely populated area will be highly noticeable. The best kind of camouflage clothing in the city is to dress like the locals in clean, dull colored clothing, preferably darker colors, and appropriate to the season. And it is also good to have an obvious and innocent reason to be in the location just in case one is stopped and questioned by a curious local. No matter how well one blends in with the local environment, movement will attract the attention of watchers. The alternative to remaining immobile in the shadows is to have an obviously innocent reason for moving around -- such as walking a dog or delivering pizza. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time will also attract attention. Walking on a busy sidewalk in a business district during the day will not attract much attention, but walking on that same sidewalk at 3 a.m., when businesses are closed and most good citizens are at home sleeping, will attract the attention of any watchers. The best way to hide a large object, such as a concrete machine gun nest, is to build it to look like a suburban house or a city townhouse. The Swiss have excelled at doing this.

The hi-viz vest thing doesn't need to be so complicated, throwing on a work jacket and putting a pair of work gloves in your pocket, where they hang out and are clearly visible, while carrying a toolbox-ish looking thing, might be enough to transform a regular street appearance into one of some electrician or something. A lot of maintenance people don't necessarily wear a full set of construction ppe. At least in my eastern european experience. There are also pieces of clothing that are up to work safety standards, while looking quite casual. To look like you belong in some place and you know what you are doing, you don't necessarily need to look like concrete golem.

In 1986 surviving FBI agents involved in a Miami shootout very nearly were shot by police responding to the gunfight. After that, "raid jackets" became standard equipment for all undercover activities. British police wear high visibility clothing because it is more important to be seen and positively identified as police by other police than it is to blend in with their surroundings--there are armed criminals in England, but generally police fratricide is a bigger issue. Some means of positive and instant identification is required for urban camouflage. Hiding in plain sight is an effective urban camouflage tactic. I have worked in the security industry as a guard for three decades and I retired from the military a decade ago--which makes me at least two of the types of people urban camouflage is supposed to fool. "What is out of place" is the primary question. If the camouflaged person and clandestine activity "fits in" then it will probably be ignored. Those Taiwan "cranes" were genius! During World War Two, many British blockhouses and bunkers were painted to resemble the shops, pubs, and homes in the area the fortified structure was defending. During the Battle of Britain when sandbags were everywhere to limit bomb damage, a sandbagged emplacement wasn't as obvious. Camouflage under that circumstance might start with painting a bunker to look like a sweets shop, but then the fake windows would be taped up and blacked out and sandbags stacked against the wall so that it looked like the rest of the street. Security guard operations often use camouflage even though a large part of security work is "physical presence." A plain automobile is a very common surveillance platform. Using "bug net" inside the car or dark window tinting disguises that the car is occupied. Modern commercial paint jobs often cover the windows as well, allowing the occupants to see out without being seen from the inside. These hides are being replaced by surveillance cameras. Concealed sally ports and one-way doors, entry screening points that are not visible until after entering a foyer, planters or decorative bollards to achieve VIEB stand-off are all camouflage techniques.

Having been both a security guard and a construction worker, I already have most of the gear for those two "disguises". I even found a hard hat with a "US Army Corps of Engineers" logo on it, which might offer an even greater air of authority in some situations. Also, having done a lot of underground utilities locating, I know that's an activity that's not uncommon in all but the most rural areas and seldom rates a second glance. At least 90% of the population would probably be fooled by a regular metal detector, if you want to try that role-play.

All you need to go with your hi-vis vest is a manilla folder & a cellphone. In fact, a hardhat is much better than a vest. Pretend to be on a call while carrying a folder of papers, and you become the architect, or other construction manager. You can even wear your 3 piece suit with that hardhat. You’ll be questioned less than a laborer, and multiple contractors are often on a jobsite at the same time. If you want to really go crazy, carry a tape measure, or, if you’re a team, carry a laser pointer and quietly discuss things high above with your partner. Super after the fact, but if you're still paying attention, the easiest high-vis act to pull off is probably an electrician (utility type) - they often work alone, very few people know anything about electricity, and it gives you an excuse to carry around electrical-looking test equipment. Plus, most electricians wear casual (jeans and button-up or polo shits) but their clothes don't get too much wear and tear. If you can pick up stuff with the right logos, you can get into places you wouldn't be able to otherwise. Similar to the whole gas company thing but doesn't alarm people as much

The best way to hide anything is to hide it in plain sight. People once took solid blocks of silver, painted them white and used them as door stops instead of locking them in a vault because no one would know to look for them as a door stop. My military doctrine for an urban environment for camouflage would be simple: casual clothes with a UV id. Concealable weapons and/or weapons you could put in a backpack. Many modern short barrel ARs or take-down ARs are very easy to deploy from a civilian backpack. Everywhere I go, i take my NorthFace backpack mainly because it has my necessary medical supplies in it for a chronic illness I have. I see a lot of people now, who carry backpacks everywhere they go, too.

What I have used in the past was a hat with medical patches on it.... and sometimes a high vis vest would help...... Of course being a nurse helped with that. Others have commented about walking or behaving as you BELONG in the situation helps too..... I recall one BIG hospital I worked in, few people actually knew each other. This one guy needed a medical bed for his grandmother and had been told what kind ect.... this one was powered and would shift the patient from side to side which removed the need to turn them every 2 hours [to prevent bed sores] at the time 1980s those new beds went for $50,000.00 and insurances would not pay for home use. SO this guy got a clip board with a picture of the bed on it and went hunting..... found one unattended and took it. He even convinced security that he was taking it to be serviced and they helped him by opening doors ect.... it was only when he tried to go out the front door of the building instead of the loading dock was the heist blown. lots of questions and he was arrested.

I've done a bit of travel all over the world. One of the first things I do is watch and see how the crowd is dressed. I'll often go out and buy local clothes even if I brought my own. In Europe you can walk around in button down shirt with tie slacks and good shoes and no one will even look twice at you. However; if you dress like that in Great Falls Montana people will take note. Here in the Northwest some jeans and T shirt when the weather allow is great. It is advisable in some NW city's to dress down and not wear anything that makes you stand out. Some gangs have shot people as away for a new member to come in.

I've transported for funeral services and have never been stopped or checked. Dress clothes and cleaned up. Here is the thing. I've passed authorities running radar and have been well over the speed limit and not stopped. I've tested this and also pull your hearse up beside another driver on the interstate. See how long they will stay paced with you? Most everytime even in the passing lane and the other vehicle in the slow lane, they will abruptly excel away. No eye contact. My old chief of police used to say, (before the checks like now. Early 90's) dress like a lawyer with brief case or utility worker and no one would give you a second look in this courthouse. Be the judge, dress raggedy pushing a cart full of junk and see what happens. He was right on all accounts.

I’ve worked a pressure washing business that cleans hoods and exhaust systems for commercial kitchens. The job obviously requires the business to be closed, so we would show up around closing time. Hours would range from anywhere of 6pm-2am when we would arrive. Walking into the back door of a kitchen full of cooks during closing obviously used to scare and freak people out, my work attire was obviously dirty already but I found having a rag, already wearing gloves, and putting on a headlamp stopped people from even asking wtf I just walked through the back door for…

Don't be so sure that no significant advances have been made in the area of multi-environment camo. DARPA and others have been working on flexible meta-materials that alter light by refraction and other methods that actually slow down light or bend it around objects. My information is over 10 years old so I'm certain that it's gone much further than we know. There's also been significant advances in defeating thermal imaging. When civilians or even soldiers become aware of new technology, it's because the secret is already out. By the way, love your channel. Not certain of your background but it's not working at WalMart.
