The key takeaway is that Hidradenitis Suppurativa or HS is not just at skin or hair follicle level disease. It starts with a malfunctioning innate immune system, causing the long lasting and relapsing inflammation. The research on HS is ongoing, and this video summarizes what we know so far.

Thank you so much for raising awareness on this disease. It means a lot to us sufferers that people know what HS is. At the very least, it helps when a doctor is aware of this. Thank you!

I have HS and this is one of the better videos on the disease but it's still not really including really important information. HS has been recognized by the medical community worldwide for over 100 years and we still don't have even a basic treatment plan, a consistent basic understanding, or Drs who have access to the actual facts about the disease to treat HS patients and not kill them because they don't understand the complications. Thank you for saying that it's not a skin condition because it's definitely not. It's debilitating, excruciating pain constantly, and nobody knows what to do. I am constantly told it's not rare and yet I have been trying to find the community IRL and not just online and I have never met anyone else with HS in person. I am severely disabled because of this and I am fighting for my life with the complications. If you have HS and you read this please try to use legal cannabis medical products topically to treat it. Along with the care and supervision of your Dr. This doesn't get you high but it is immediate pain relief and comfort and anti inflammatory and I have found it will help an abscess drain faster for me. Thank you to anyone who takes time to learn about this and actually care about the suffering of their fellow human beings. 💜

This is such an easy to follow and informative video. I hadn't heard of this condition before. Being exposed to the science behind this disease helps me, as a member of the general public, have a greater degree of compassion for sufferers of what must be a distressing condition. I would like to see a series of "Helping to Understand...." videos that address conditions, such as this, that draw attention in public.

You probably would never meet someone with it, and if you did, they do not tell people. It just isnt information that is easily shared. Many go their entire life without getting accurately diagnosed.

I live with HS . Only in my groin area . My mom as it also. When my weight is down its better and when I'm eating well and refraining from alcohol and stress. Looking at options . Surgery, humiria injections, or continuing to deal with it .

What worsen hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is the fact that you don't know if there is a cure yet, I got cured from my HPV after using (Dr ALUDA) herbs. You can get more information by contacting Dr ALUDA on KZbin Channel.

This was interesting. I had no clue that this disease existed. It seems to be very painful and I can see how this disease can come to dominate your life. It’s one of those things you don’t even wish your greatest enemy to suffer from. I hope that there will soon be a cure for it.

Thanks so much for covering this. As a health science student with HS, it's rare to find such a comprehensive overview of its pathophysiology. Antibiotics still seem to be the first Rx intervention. As you mention the treatment targets should be IL-1, IL-17 and TNF-α, what do you feel the first line treatment should be for someone, especially if flares occur with monthly hormonal changes?

You're welcome, I am glad to be able to provide some insight. It's great to know that science students are watchign this. Where do you study health science? I have heard that with hormonal-related HS, you could discuss with your dermatologist the possibility of going on contraceptions? Hope it helps.

@@youre-so-wonderful8455 Thanks for your reply :) I'm studying down in Melbourne :) I am considering contraceptions, but still exploring a few other options before that going down that path (we're our best guinea pigs, aren't we :)). I haven't got my hormone levels checked, but some study's show that the majority of HS patients don't have hormonal dysregulation, What are your thoughts on the studies indicating that flares maybe due to an overreaction from either androgen receptors on the hair follicle, or a post-androgen receptor response, that results in escalation of symptoms, especially around ovulation and mid-late luteal phase. Androgen receptors are also sensitive to dietary changes, especially IGF-1, potentially providing a mechanism to the correlation between IR and HS. If that is the case, contraceptions would provide some relief due to their suppression of sex hormones, but is it really targeting the underlying issue? I also wonder if excessive systemic cytokines, due to a comorbidity (I also have an autoimmune condition) prior to the blockage of the hair follicle, may cause an overreaction of the immune system, resulting in symptom escalation. So instead of reducing the acute inflammation with corticosteroid injections, or suppressing hormones that activate these receptors, look at decreasing the systemic inflammation, with as you said anti-inflammatory diets, etc, and of looking at any potential dysbiosis in the gut, contributing to that underlying inflammatory response as well. I don't get much of a chance to discuss these concepts, so thanks for engaging with me :) Are you guys actively research HS, or is your video more of an overview of the current state of the condition?

There is a lot of great research going on looking at HS now. First line I suggest topical agents but if they fail and you’re getting hormonal flares then I’d consider anti-androgen therapy such as specific oral contraceptive pills or spironolactone, of course not all meds suit everyone and they can have side effects so suggest see your Dermatologist for a tailored plan

Is there any relation to the cytokines released in HS to the cytokine storm from Covid-19? Is someone with HS going to be more negatively impacted by Covid-19?

This is just my anecdote, bus since going on humira for my HS, I've been sick less, even though the rx is an immune suppressant when your immune system is attacking your body its not exactly doing its job.
