Higgs Boson: The Inside Scoop

In July of 2012, physicists found a particle that might be the long-sought Higgs boson. In the intervening months, scientists have worked hard to pin down the identity of this newly-found discovery. In this video, Fermilab's Dr. Don Lincoln describes researcher's current understanding of the particle that might be the Higgs. The evidence is quite strong but the final chapter of this story might well require the return of the Large Hadron Collider to full operations in 2015.

I like your explanation how the Higgs Boson field was similar to being in a pool of H20 or particles are moving in a pool of Higgs Boson. I have a feeling that as we get more and more sensitive or powerful tools for measuring we will find that the Bosons, Quarks, Leptons will be made of even smaller elements, then once those particles are measured then there will be even smaller particles that will be discovered.

This is about -starting to use it- becaus its alredy there- Then we start to see the missing link i practice and the fifth element in the real life. When are we going to understand this??? Excellent. Thank you for breaking it down that way. This guys obviously a friggin' genius, but more importantly to all of us at our levels he's a good instructor as well. The one thing I can't stand, whether it's computer troubleshooting (and I'm pretty technical in that) or scientific theories or anything relatively complicated are those who refuse to break things down so that people can understand. As I understood it the Higgs showed barely 3 sigma and at two (124 and 126 GeV) points which is about as close to a fact as I am a horseshoe. I don't think we are even close to done on this topic

I don´t want to be negative or so but no we won´t. There is soooo many things that we haven´t discovered that we need to and so many theories and lack of facts so it will take a looong time. I´ll be waiting for many groundbreaking news before we would even start to make small discovers in this and till will have a unified theory about everything, if we ever.

Glory to the critical thinkers! Put 'em in charge and we'll all be better off. As to your optimism toward a Grand Unified Theory, I have to disagree. The "particle zoo" is still becoming increasingly diverse, and the ratio of questions asked to answers found continues to increase. We're still far from even a general consensus on most aspects of quantum physics, aka The Study of Things That Break Every Rule Just to Spite Our Efforts. My money's on interstellar travel before a GUT.

what you want to prove is the anti photon. Find the balance. What energy is the inverse? inverse energy? See you're talking parity now, so you're answering your own question. Absolutes. No math needed. Just what must be. They're probably all bosons. You just notice changes and assume you're seeing a particle that's unlike the others, but the others can probably change too. And it isn't random. It's a highly sophisticated response system that can change its programming while the program is still running. I dont buy it. CERN named the last remaining energy zap measured after Peter Higgs. between 100kev and 600kev you picked the one at 125kev. Kinda lets the air out of the term "God particle" doesnt it? When you collide two protons and get three from that collision that will be something. Until then your just measuring energy released from a busted up proton. Thats scientific consensus in action! Its a really expensive machine though so Im glad you found another use for it. Cant wait to see the data on the neutrino's through the earth experiments. Although Ive got a few experiments for that machine in my head Id like to try. Protons flinging at near the speed of light! That is something all on its own. Nature does it all the time (in space) but this is an awesome accomplishment of man. And no one has even weaponized it! (I dont think, Have they?)

I hate to make waves (Physics humour) what they found is a neutrino. The missing fourth energy state of the neutrino. Known as the sterile neutrino, complete with a much heavier mass. When the Higgs boson and the neutrino are compared, they have the same frequency,energy and location in the electromagnetic spectrum.

What advantage would there be in keeping it secret? Getting a self-consistent GUT model, even without experimental evidence, would be a massive leap forward no-one would want to keep to themselves.

not really. mass is just a property, not a force.

Well, no. The Higgs field is responsible for the rest mass of elementary particles; as is said in one of the other videos, the majority of a mass of a proton or a neutron (and therefore, of you) does not come from the rest mass of the three quarks. Gravity affects any mass; it can even affect photons which have no rest mass (though it can't increase or decrease their speed, it can affect their trajectory). Also, the properties of the Higgs boson and the hypothetical graviton are very different. The Higgs boson is massive and has a spin of zero. The graviton is massless and has a spin of 2.

My ignorance in this question may be big, but as someone who is just interested in physics, not actively studying them, a thought came to my head: "if the Higgs field "gives" mass to particles, couldn't it be manipulated, like stretched so it wouldn't permeate a corridor of space? Couldn't traveling in such a corridor in space take far less effort?

But what would take up its space? You can't have empty space as it's always filled with something. Even a vacuum isn't what it's thought to be but supposedly made up of dark matter or dark energy.

The Higgs boson, the smallest particle found. Maybe the scientists will find a smaller particle. Wow. After they find that last particle, then what? How small can small get? I think it never ends, like the universe, there is no end to how far you can go in either direction.

I'm no expert, but electromagnetism seems to closely resemble vortex physics, with the vortex ( magnetism) circling around a electric field (warm air and an outside cold air, in the case of vortex physics). Can this model be applied to the case of quarks and the size of the nuclear core and it's ability to attract more electrons?

I can almost positively say in my lifetime a Grand Unified Theory will be accomplished and we will finally complete Einstein's and every awesome scientists works( I'm 30). At some point it will be nice for everyone to share in the glory of these discoveries, and learn about the place they live in, instead of caring what someone wore on the red carpet. Imagine the discoveries possible if every human were thinking and doing science instead of wasting potential. Glory to the critical thinkers
