I’m actually shocked that Bill Maher doesn’t know, and vehemently denies any connection between Ancient Rome and China. Ever heard of The Silk Road??? There was global trade going back to at least the Bronze Age. Rome used to import goods from China, like silk and spices, and China used to import goods from Rome. In fact, we have the writings of Chinese envoys who were sent to Rome about their impressions. Also, we know exactly what they used to eat in Ancient Rome through one of the most famous cookbooks ever written, De Re Coquinarium, by Apicius.

Bill’s comment at @1:15 reveals his ignorance of the law. A police investigation that ends without charges is not an “exoneration”, it simply means there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him to secure a conviction on the “beyond reasonable doubt” standard of proof. While an accused benefits from a *legal presumption* of innocence in a prosecution, this does not mean that outside of the courtroom we have to suspend our doubts or pretend that they have been “exonerated” if they are not charged or convicted.

Neil Degrasse Tyson was "exonerated" by fox news Corp who had 3 of his shows on 2 of their networks? Yet the public gave him a pass even tho he's a creep, I'm sure Bill did too. Completely agree with separating the art from the artist, completely disagree with that means they are exonerated.

I'm not easily offended, even as a liberal, but I find it appalling that Lebowitz dismisses entire segments of America. This kind of elitist snobbery is exactly why liberalism has a bad reputation. Dismissing people like this is despised by the working class in places like Arizona and Tennessee, which is why many support Trump-because of behavior like this from liberals. It frustrates me deeply. We need everyone in America to come together. EDIT: Yes, I know it’s part of her “schtick”. No hate to Fran, many people are guilty of this sort of banter. I just feel at the moment, each side needs to be extending an olive branch, rather than dismissing each other.

The silk road. Bill.
@Dr.TJ13 ай бұрын
I said the exact same thing as soon as Bill said there was no connection between Rome and China. There was an enormous amount of trade between Rome and China and it could even have been considered a precursor to free trade agreements, which are designed to allow countries to do what they’re good at and then to sell their products to other countries without tariffs and without price gouging. Even though the Romans loved their silk they got from China, the Romans were selling their camels, wine, and gold right back to China.

@Dr.TJ13 ай бұрын
@@WhateverHappenedToHer0331 I had to look it up and found that the Chinese were eating noodles from at least 3000 BC and the Roman Republic from at least 400 BC. But you’re right about marinara, which came along much later (1700s). Before marinara, people were eating pasta with a cream sauce, similar to but not exactly the same as Alfredo sauce.
@D123453 ай бұрын
@@Dr.TJ1 To be clear it was not a direct connection, especially in the early years, that is a bit of an academic invention. Finding someone "not guilty" does not prove they are innocent. It just means the burden to prove them guilty wasn't met according to the jury. Bill was equivocating on the two as if they are the same, and then floating it to the audience as if they must accept that false equivalency or reject "rule of law". Very few people are left who thought OJ was "innocent". But he was found "not guilty". Accepting the jury's verdict of "not guilty" is not the same as accepting that he was indeed innocent.

These were not well thought out answers: USA pulled out of Afghanistan, Vietnam, Iraq, more. Ukraine of course can win, and it could lead to Putin getting ousted. Putin may not get out soon enough and gets himself killed or any number of probabilities that can barely be calculated at this point. One thing is for sure for at least 2 years: there is no quick end to the war by winning overpoweringly, but it can win by one side giving up and it may suit Ukraine to keep going. Ukraine has destroyed months worth of ammo in just the last week, and it's looking likely they will be able to strike Russian cities, as well as take more territory. Russian losses of nearing 700k troops is growing unpopular in Russia, costing their economy, which makes their way even harder to fund let alone fend off rivals. They can't manufacturer fast enough if you've paid any attention, and now that Ukraine has more deep-strike capability through self produced munitions, Ukraine will likely, soon, be able to attack any rus factories. It's not inconceivable that Ukraine could extend it many more years making it worse for Putin, and taking as much or more land than they've lost: they are clearly the better fighting force despite less munitions and men. I doubt Russia wants to give up crimea, but they may give up kursk. That's if Russia can keep crimea. Sure Russia may keep recruiting and putin may avoid a coup for awhile, but how long is anyone's guess, the rumblings grow each day. Taking a personal perspective now: imagine USA getting invaded by China, they have greater numbers, maybe even more equipment at this time.., if you're American, what would you accept by the Chinese? Would you accept anything less than get the fuck out and die? Not easily you wouldn't. I've been to China several times, the people are like any other of the dozens of countries I've been to, the system of government is not. It's the system that matters, which relegated who is in charge. You think democracy is inefficient? Go to Iran, Russia, Malaysia. You think corruption doesn't matter? It's the biggest problem in the world next to bad systems. Russia is the culmination of corruption and inefficiency of managing humanity, and that in itself is worth fighting against, let alone being invaded by them.
@EUMikkel3 ай бұрын
Exactly
@dragonrings143 ай бұрын
Historically Russia doesn't lose. It is nice to think that Russia will retreat or they will oust Putin but based on what history has taught us, it is far more likely that things will drag on, millions will die and the land they're fighting over will be reduced to rubble. The best outcome is a swift and decisive end where Russia probably keeps territories and Ukraine gains more protections in their remaining lands. However if it drags on and Putin dies (he is old) then Ukraine has a chance of getting all their land back. The cost will be high though. As for Crimea, people don't understand, Russia can't give it up. It was the end of the Crimea deal that caused this entire thing. Russia needs that port. It is worth billions to them. Best you could hope for is a splitting of the area. But it may be that Crimea is lost for good.

I read many of the reports. All we really had was allegations from internal to a family where animosities were running on overdrive. Correlation is not causation. Allegations are not evidence. I actually take Mariel Hemingway's comments more seriously than Ronan Farrow's. "Though she declined his advances, she states she continued to "love him as a friend" and was grateful that they stayed in touch in later years." Perhaps he was a typical film industry d-bag, but it falls a long way short of the Cosby or Weinstein techniques. "Hemingway received Academy and BAFTA Award nominations for her performance in Woody Allen's _Manhattan_ (1979)." That's how the very powerful Woody Allen treated a young woman who spurned his inappropriate (but not illegal) advances. I think that woke has become annoyingly ageist. Anyone can now sleep with anyone, unless there's an age difference. I don't think that Millennials and Gen Z these days think they deserve the full power of consent at age 21, long before they are actually adults. Perhaps they are right. But I guess they are old enough to consent with each other (awfully darn carefully, from what I've read on the subject) because that was going to happen anyway, except for the ones who dropped out of the scene entirely, because the new rules of conduct are too galling (some would rather be celibate, so long as they can play Counter-Strike before they wander off to visit rub hub). The glamorous morality of young people in the age of social media is not matched by an equally glamorous reality in their own bedrooms, so far as anyone has reported. Wikipedia: The findings of the judicial investigation carried out during the custody trial between Farrow and Allen determined that before 1990, Previn and Allen had rarely spoken to each other. According to Previn, her first friendly interaction with Allen took place when she was injured playing soccer during 11th grade and Allen offered to transport her to school. Following her injury, in 1990, Previn began attending New York Knicks basketball games with Allen. Previn graduated from high school and began college in 1991. According to the birthdate the Seoul Family Court assigned her, she turned 21 in October 1991. The judicial investigation during the custody trial between Farrow and Allen concluded that Allen's and Previn's sexual relationship began in December 1991. Mia Farrow's friends have said it might have started in the spring or summer of 1991, before Soon-Yi turned 21. Hmmm. That's where this trail always ends: dark conjecture from Mia's faction. Since then Woody and Previn have stayed together, as if this was an affair of the heart all along. If you are ageist about adult sexuality, this alone is intolerable. But on the other hand, half the celebrities in Hollywood eventually seem to upgrade to younger models. Any why shouldn't they? It's a free country. Bad marriage is the great leveller, and bad remarriage is a second kick to the groin.

Why does Bill deny he's Jewish nowadays. His mother was Jewish, so that makes him half. In his early days of stand-up, he talked about his Jewish ancestry. What changed...not his DNA, that's for sure!

He "claims" he didn't know he was Jewish. His Mother never told anyone. Not even her children??? How is that possible? He went to CCD and his mother had nothing to say about it at all? It is very weird......Bill knew his Mother wasn't Catholic......Hard to believe she never had bagels and "Jewish" foods and lifestyle introduced to him at home somewhere along the way.......

Then your problem with Woody is obviously based on a LIE. Since he did not marry his adopted daughter. He is married to Soon-Yi PREVIN, an adopted daughter of André PREVIN as her name so clearly indicates. I don't know why people LOVE to maintain this clear falsehood. But I recommend against it.

Ian Bremmer never fails to be intelligent and super interesting to listen to. He always knows his stuff. He has a very strong and passionate way of speaking that never crosses over to ego or arrogance. For me, he is the standard of a great guest. I liked the other guest too very much but I never saw his name because they don't put it on the screen like they used to. They used to do it a lot, so people who just popped in knew who they were. I have no idea why they stopped doing that.
