Today’s video, as the title suggests, is all about high altitude backpacking tips. I’ll go over how to prevent altitude sickness, and how to spot the signs for it while high-altitude trekking. I’ll talk about acclimatization, high mountain hiking tips, altitude training, hydration at high elevations, high-altitude nutrition, and more to ensure safety in high altitude, mountainous terrain. There are many altitude-related challenges that can arise on backpacking trips, and I want to share my experiences in order to help you be more prepared for when you venture into the high country!
Nothing in this video is medical advice, always talk to a doctor before taking any medications!

Solid, updated tips! Also, each exposure to high elevation can have different effects; never having altitude sickness does not mean your immune and being sick once does not mean you'll always have it. So enjoy the days you have without difficulties.

great point!! anecdotally, I struggled a lot with atltidue as a kid (remember being so sick on top of pikes peak ha) and now not so much, but I know it could change at any time!

didn’t realize I needed to watch this video until I watched it! Thanks for the tips, particularly the one about doing a short day on the first day to acclimate. I tend to be overzealous, so it’s a reminder to hike smart.

ah thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it!! I am also the overzealous type on occasion so I need that reminder too.

Great tips. I did exactly this on my JMT thru hike. It was so helpful to acclimate first and go southbound too since the climbs get bigger and bigger

This is SUPER helpful. Thank you! I’m 60 now and I know I have issues with no appetite on trail many times. I am starting the JMT this summer going NOBO and I appreciate the fact I’ll be camping before my hike at 9k ft, then a short bit up to camp again and then another at Guitar lake before Whitney, but some of that still worries me. I’ll be training as much as I can at high altitudes before I start to hopefully better know what to expect from my body.

Great advice. I was debating whether I would attempt Mt. Whitney this year when I am on the PCT. This will give me a few things to consider. Thanks. Plant Papa

If you have the time and energy, I think it's definitely worth attempting! Good luck on your hike and (hopefully) Whitney attempt!

I took Diamox for Peru. Besides what you mentioned, it made my face and hands tingly. Once I mentioned it, other people commented about it, too.

I have a trip in April planned, had to shorten trip so im alittle worried... Wisconsin based, then head for the Eclipse in Texas. Then gonna head to New Mexico to summit wheeler peak 13.1k elevation. If that goes well give myself a day to head up to Colorado yo attempt my first 14er, Blanca Peak outside Great sand dunes. Plan to camp this one at one of the higher lakes... we'll see what happens, solo adventures are alittle more risky so ill see how i feel...

Sounds like you’ve got a good plan in place! I’ve heard great things about Blanca but haven’t climbed that one myself. Good luck!! April might still be challenging with some snow but maybe you’ll get some good packed trail.
