Mount Kilimanjaro's extreme altitude is the primary hurdle for reaching the summit. If you acclimatize well, then there's a high probability that you will be successful in getting to the top.
This video discusses what you can do to boost your acclimatization and increase your chances of reaching the summit, safely and successfully.
Acclimatization Guidelines on Kilimanjaro
#1 Ascend slowly. Your guides will set a slow pace throughout your climb. Because it takes time to acclimatize, your elevation gain should be gradual. Statistically, each additional day spent on the mountain generally increases your chances of getting to the top by about 20%.
#2 Don’t overexert yourself. Mild exercise may help altitude acclimatization, but strenuous activity may promote altitude sickness. It's important to be properly trained for the route you intend to climb so that you aren’t exhausted at the end of each day.
#3 Climb high, sleep low. This is an old adage of mountaineering. It means that you should climb to a higher altitude during the day, then sleep at a lower altitude at night. Most of our Kilimanjaro routes comply with this principle and include optional acclimatization hikes. But some routes are better than others.
#4 Eat and drink enough. It’s recommended that you drink four to five liters of fluid per day. Also, eat a high calorie diet while at altitude, even if your appetite is diminished.
#5 Use Diamox. The FDA approved drug is effective for the prevention and treatment of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
#6 Avoid tobacco, alcohol and other depressant drugs. These further decrease the respiratory drive during sleep, resulting in a worsening of altitude sickness. And, alcohol is forbidden in the park.
#7 Know when to descend. If you begin to show symptoms of moderate altitude sickness, don't go higher if your symptoms don’t decrease. If symptoms get worse, descend.
