(Maybe this question is a little too extensive to ask in a youtube comment. Happy to write a mail if this is the case.) When cutting hardened steel up to 72 Rockwell C in hardness, 6mm maximum thickness at speed this high: how big is the HAZ (Heat Affected Zone)? Single digit micron range like in EDM?

A very nice demonstration. Does the laser heat cause a slight taper due to top being exposed more to the laser? What gas is used?
@Avonisys3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes, you are right, there is a slight taper with the top portion being approx. 0.01mm wider as the exit. The system is equipped with an Air-Jet function to blow dry the cutting area and to protect the waterjet from disturbances. As the name implicates that runs with air (CDA)

@Thomas Jefferson home building a cnc machine that can rival company built is expensive too. EDM machines even home built is expensive. the cost of a high power laser is relative to those costs. seeing as you need a fiber laser and not a CO2 laser toy its not going to be cheap either.
@GL-Coding Жыл бұрын
@Thomas Jefferson Thats why you buy the laser diode and then purchase the correct lenses and make yourself a laser source that can cut 80um or whatever your heart desires. Laser building is not that difficult its just hard to find the parts but now that alibaba exists it's like finding hay in a haystack haha.

so the water is just for chip evacuation/part cooling? it doesn't seem very high-pressure. also, are the laser and the water coaxial? it seems like the turbulent flow when the water hits the workpiece would cause unwanted optical effects.

Dayum! 0.05mm kerf thickness! I repeat, 0.05mm! That is 0.001968504 INCHES for all you people not using the metric system. For reference, human hair has a thickness diameter range of 0.04mm to 0.12mm. My 3D printer's standard layer height is 0.20mm and the factory specs allow for printing at 0.10mm layer height using a nozzle diameter of 0.4mm. I have been able to get a few prints at 0.05 using that nozzle but print time is 4 times longer but the layer lines are almost invisible to the naked eye, especially using a white filament.
