I don’t love every Tyler Perry’s films but appreciate his contribution. Some of his critics are lowkey jealous of his success. I grew up watching Tyler Perry. To this day I there are moments where I want something simple and light. I know people who find Tubi movies to be entertaining just bc they’re low budget. I can go on and on. I think he found his niche. I don’t think it’s that deep. His movies highlight some real stuff that goes on in any community and understand it can triggering.

Tyler Perry movies and plays, IMO, appeal to people who don't expect much from life, love or anything for that matter. I thought he was getting a little bit better with "The Family that Preys" (no Madea in that one) but...he seems stuck...and if it makes him and his fans happy, have at it...I checked out a LOOOOONG time ago.

I've always found Tyler Perry's work boring and "trauma based". After seeing a few Perry movies, I wrote off Perry long ago for being predictable and boring. As I told my Mom, "it's all high trauma, someone is beaten, someone goes to jail, someone might die, then the family sings a song and goes to church." That hasn't been my existence and I can't relate. Perry should have stuck to plays, or he should hire writers who are better story tellers. I don't like Perry's portrayals of Black Women. I think Perry hates Black Women, because he isn't one. Perry hasn't launched one actor or actress into superstardom. It's all about him. Perry's repetitiveness doesn't translate to films, to me. Jordan Peele is a more complex, deep thinking director, who defies categorization.

I used to rush home from school trying to catch Rolanda, Ricky Lake, and Jenny Jones enough reminiscing 😊. I believe that black churches and Tyler Perry exploit women's struggles for financial gain. While the Bible acknowledges women's challenges, it also celebrates their triumphs. Unfortunately, Tyler Perry does not consistently offer practical solutions to the problems he highlights in his films.

TP doesn't care. He has a captive audience who like what he's dishing out and they are not making a demand on his writing. That's how I see it. If nobody liked it & consumed his art, he wouldn't be a millionaire. Says a lot about his audience more than it says about him🤔

About 20 years ago I repented of my idolization of Tyler Perry and others. I had no business getting into The Haves and The Have Nots like I did. I’m black yet it wasn’t a race thing for me. It was a moral thing. And I realized that Tyler Perry’s movies were just as reduced as most of Hollywood’s movies. I was raised with higher standards so why settle for Tyler Perry’s level. I shouldn’t have. It was me that was wrong and not Tyler Perry.

Seems like people love to criticize him but will drop his name as soon as there’s a need for money or an opportunity. “Where’s Tyler Perry?” I’m not a fan of his movies because I favor documentaries but he has a successful formula. His name is in stone…especially because of his studio. **It’s never enough…EVER.”**

I agree. In the beginning his material was needed & seeing US on screen was necessary, but he definitely hasn’t evolved or grown in the area of what he puts out. Then again he may have that “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mentality as well.

I used to love Tyler Perry movies. However, I am so tired of seeing the struggle black love narrative or the abusive husband narrative. I know many black people who have great loving marriages.

Thanks for your perspective. I'm from the south too and relate to the language used😂. I was a fan of his plays, some of his earlier movies, and the tv shows the Paynes and Browns. But I fell off with those nighttime soaps he started showing.. They were not appealing. So I haven't watched a lot of his stuff in years, but I did watch the divorce movie with my husband thinking because Debbie Morgan was in it, it would be different (wasn't nothing new) we were like we wasted our time. It's sad because he uses great actors/actresses. At this point, I agree he will not do anything different unless he gets some other writers. I am back to not watching his stuff again. Thanks again, chile😂🤗.

I haven’t watched his movies in years. There was a movie of his coming out where I heard a character got AIDS. I thought ok so diary of a mad black woman but instead of getting beat down she gets a disease. I finally realized trauma porn isn’t my thing

Nope. I said what I said and if you don't like it, you can kiss the blackest most moisturized part!

It’s simple put PEN to PAPER he did 🤷🏽♀️ it’s a lot of room for everyone’s ideas. To be honest people do like NEGATIVE stories so they can TRAUMA BOND as I see it all the time in people blog comments. Those comments get the most views shares and likes equaling to big bucks for the blogs. That is why blog like shade room is so popular.

I enjoy TP stuff, but probably not for the reasons he wants me to. It's a "so bad it's good" thing. I know exactly what to expect. Nonsensical storylines, generational trauma, bad acting (from good actors! 🤷🏾♀️), and bad wigs.

Another ole southern expression.. Why fix what ain't broke? So I get it, why TP has the same type of storylines. He probably has no intent to evolve and yes the people who watch are the problem, he's juat being his unbothered self making money! Great commentary, you're very amusing while articulating your view, your opinion!

Also, I loved his plays he used to do when he first came on the scene. But over the years some of his movies have been something I haven’t desired to see. And 5 minutes into Divorce in the Black, I turned it off. I said nope not going to watch this. Way too triggering and people should really think about what they are taking in.

At this point, radical acceptance is needed. I watch a few of his things not much. I have no expectations of it being good or having depth. It was even reported he has writers now, but the writers are writings under his direction which means he ain't changing nothing. Why should he? He has achieved what he defines as successful. A broken individual is broken regardless of rich or poor.

Tyler ain’t changing what he knows the people will always watch, even if they hate watch just so they can be apart of the online conversations, which is what I feel a lot of people do. I don’t watch his stuff either, I’m just not interested.

I don't watch Tyler Perry either because I don't like the "OH Woow is Me" negative stories about black folks. I love the positive, inspirational, stories. I read Octavia Butler, the first African American female Science Fiction author. At the time, she was the ONLY one.

They said that his movie hit high numbers on Amazon. That does not change my opinion about some of his movies. I always believed in quality over quantity. As a film maker he should too. I understand in the beginning that's what you may focus on, but at this point in his career, why isn't quality a factor?

Some of his stuff I like. Some of it is too much! I started watching The Oval but had to stop when one of the scenes showed the president’s son in a session with his therapist. He proceeded to pleasure himself and SHE ended up needing the tissue is how I’ll say it!

I can't relate to his movies, so I don't watch. So he can't complain if he doesn't get nominated for a Oscar. He isn't going to change his formula because it is making him money. He caters to a certain demographic, and he knows it. He doesn't want to levate his writing, and I think he won't hire writers because he doesn't want to share the wealth. This is a person who didn't want his actors to join SAG AFTRA,because he wasn't trying to make sure they had benefits, so he's always cutting corners, so that's his mentality. Folks need to stop supporting him.

You told NO lie. I did not think of it that way. He hasn’t grown as a writer. He’s stuck. I think Tyler Perry is equating success with money. Because he had a multi million dollar deal with Netflix to produce movies, he feels he’s in high demand. No disrespect or harm to you, but he’ll listen to this platform and see our comments and feel we are the high brows. It’s going to take someone he deems as in his current world to tell him the truth you spoke on this video. To hurt his feelings to the truth and help him do better. But the ones around him are to chicken and in his pockets to tell him his writing stinks and he’s not growing.

The Tyler Perry conversation reminds me of my mixed feelings on a majority of 'urban literature'. While im glad people are reading books, the subject matter isnt to my taste. Its times like these where it becomes apparent that it IS the people because the demand is there. At this point, Tyler Perry is a reflection of parts of his fans. He cant exist without them. That being said, he is very arrogant and while im familar with the uppity phrasing, hes using it as a us (commonfolk) vs them (bougie blacks) set up. He has the right to defend himself but has no problem using his voice to pit his fans against his critics. He is quite manipulative. He knows he can wrangle sympathy because hes a poor, rich black man. And people fall for it.

It's unfortunate that despite having money, his own studio and resources, TP lacks the desire, interest, and integrity to hire writers to craft uplifting stories, and actors, actresses, and directors to bring them to fruition. His focus on trauma and dysfunction in the Black community is depressing and lacks imagination. His formula is profitable for him, so he has no incentive to do better, sadly.

Tyler needs a writer's room PERIOD. I had stopped watching his movies & sitcoms 2015-16. His movies are all the same. I did watch the Divorce in the Black b/c Megan Good & Cory Hardict and their recent divorces but same old same old, no growth. It actually, in my opinion, he got worse.
