High Coast Hav Review: Swedish Whiskey

Welcome back Drinkers!
This week we are traveling a little north and trying some Swedish Whiskey! Ya you heard that right! This week we are reviewing the Swedish distillery High Coast and their single malt whiskey called "Hav" which means sea.
We are always a fan of single malts and we really hope this unique pour lives up to the hype. Time tom put our snow suits on boys, because it is time for some Alcohol Content!

Just had to mention that Absolut vodka is Swedish and I guess that's the most famous product.

Absolut is known. But its not swedish anymore and its not good. Virtuous vodka is the best swedish vodka. Its always winning gold when competing.

If you want a whisky from Sweden with a unique bottle, then you really should try and get a hold of a bottle from Spirit of Hven. I recommend Tycho's Star. The destillery is located on the island of Ven in the Oresund Strait between Sweden and Denmark and beside from whisky they also produce their own vodka and gin, both flavored and unflavored, as well as Aquavit. All the malt that they use for their whisky are locally grown on the island. Ven is also the island where the renaissance astronomer Tycho Brahe lived and worked at the palace-observatory Uraniborg and his underground observatory Stjerneborg .

If you like smokey whisky High Coast Timber is the one you should try.

High Coast Berg is a must try! High Coast Älv is great too. And if you can find a bottle of High Coast Lägereld.... Its the holy grail!

The story goes that High Coast originally was named Box but that Bacardi or some other "Big Guy" knocked on their door and said " Box is a trade name of us, so if you don't want to wrestle us in court you better change name". A fantastic whisky and as a Swede I see no reason to buy expensive Scottish maltwhisky any longer.

I really enjoyed this bottle. Picked it up a couple years ago in MD for about 65+tax… well worth it. It did have a funky note to it that reminded me of a lightly peated Campbeltown. Cheers!

I hope you can find any whisky from Agitator, but especially their chestnut cask one... it's my favorite Swedish whisky brand by far. They don't focus on old rules and traditions - they want to make tasty whisky. And using a chestnut cask? Well, that's illegal in Scotland if I'm not mistaken, but wow, does it work well! 😆

I see a few swedes was here before me. I was gonna mention high Coast berg as well. High Coast core range is one of the best both as swede or compared to big scotch brands.

I live just one hour drive from High Coast in Sweden :). You should try and review High Coast Berg whisky. It is very good, better than Hav I think.

It always amazes me when I hear guys abroad buying alcohol on a discount. Would never happen here in sweden!

I guess we get lucky due to the fact that people aren't buying things like this over here in the US. Unfortunately, id its discounted it means we might not see it again 😢

@@alcoholcontent in sweden all alcohol above 3.5 abv is sold by Systembolaget. Which is a state run store. They have anti alcoholism policies that forbid them to use most known sales tactics. I.E their goal is to sell as little as possible.

@@alcoholcontent Sweden has a monopoly selling anything above 3.5% in stores. Since Systembolaget (government store) has their position, they won't really have any discounts (with that said - there are. sometimes, discounts - like christmas beer during the summer)

Systembolaget actually lowers prices on selected products from time to time, but they neither can nor are allowed to announce the price reductions. However, there are websites that keep track of these price drops. Vinbörsen, for example, lists all discounted wines and also lets some of Sweden's top wine writers taste and review them.

The High Coast is basically the swedish cosst north of Sundsvall for about 200km. Its unusual in sweden because the land is much higher than sealevel. Usualy in Sweden the coast is about the same level as the sea

Fyi. The Letter "Å" is not pronounced "A". It is rather pronounced as the english word "awe". And the Swedish letter "Ä" is not pronounced "A" either. It is pronounced kinda like the "ai"-sound in the english word "dairy". Therefore "Ångermanälven" is pronounced like this: 'Awe'-ngerman-'ai'-lven.

Booked a barrel 5 years later it gone from 45 liters to less than 30. Good taste but I would never do it again with that company.

No, we sold it to French Pernod Ricard but it’s still made in Åhus in south of Sweden, Skåne.

I have the high coast timmer, very very disappointing whisky!... Watery texture, so soft, too soft, not very complex... I need to try the others but not a bottle!
