Important to highlight Thomas Gradin's huge role in all this! He returned to the Canucks as a scout in 1994 and has been their top European scout since 1998. He's had a big hand in every Canucks draft selection out of Sweden since Ohlund - he's the one who convinced Burke to move mountains to draft both Sedins in 1999, and convinced Benning to pick Pettersson over Cody Glass in 2017, etc.. Seems like he's quietly started stepping back from scouting in recent years and just retired this offseason, so especially timely to acknowledge the massive legacy he leaves within the organization as a builder in addition to his accomplishments for the team on the ice. Also worth adding that the Sedins rejoined the Canucks hockey ops as advisors in 2021 and have taken on increasing responsibilities to support the coaching staff and player development program for the team. And Nils Aman was another Swede on the roster for the majority of last season, playing in 43 games plus 5 more in the playoffs.
@uncleweed5 ай бұрын
I came here to say all of the above… Thomas Gradin has done incredible work behind the scenes and having the scenes (and was hugely underrated really as a player as he was a slight built guy playing in a rough and tumble conference and era, and would've thrived in the modern game. Having the being active with the coaching staff should continue to improve the skill of so many players, especially as the Canucks are choosing deeper in the draft and have to make every pick count (yes, I'm super aware of the dodgy draft history in years past)

Europeans were thought to be not tough enough to play in North America. This changes first with Salming with Toronto then the influx of Swedish players playing for the Winnipeg Jets in the mid 70’s. This opened the door for other Swedish and European players

Thomas Gradin, Patrik Sundstrom, Mattias Ohlund, Markus Naslund, Daniel & Henrik Sedin twin brothers, Johan Hedberg, Alexander Edler, Elias Petterson etc. Like it or not but the Canucks have really found tallents others either overlooked or underestimated to go for - And that Swedish track record proves solid. Only for some reason, Anders Eldebrink never panned out in the NHL despite on International and European level was a elite level defender (!). It is near legendary how the Canucks earned Markus Naslund for "nothing" in trade and trading drafts to aquire BOTH the Swedish teenage wonders Sedins (in what was beside 5 players in total a very weak draft year). In my opinion, I think the core reason there was a stereotype against Swedish players many decades ago was lack of communication and understanding on the North American game vs. The European/International game. No internet, no websites to research this stuff. Swedish players in the NHL now are prepped since they show promise in their early teens for the NHL game and many come over for Major Junior, if they can. Even if not, from an academic level they get it. Tom Wollander if you've seen his interviews is 100% prepared for the NHL.

I think an important thing to note about the 2011 Riots in Vancouver, is that a large majority of Canucks fans were just as surprised as everyone else watching that night. Vancouver was in chaos. We all felt that tremendous loss that night, but that Riot was the worst part. This was our community, our businesses, our home. and to watch people wear our jerseys, loot stores and flip cop cars. What an awful night that was.
@DB-gr7ch4 ай бұрын
Reverse the premise: Why do Swedes come to Vancouver? First, Vancouver is a lovely, safe city to live in. Second, the pressure to perform in Vancouver is quite low, as local fans are among the least "rabid" of any Canadian franchise. (See: Toronto, Montreal or even Edmonton) So many Swedish players PREFER to Vancouver over many other NHL cities....while many other, more career-driven / ambitious players wouldn't want to go somewhere without a winning tradition. Third, now that there's a real culture/tradition of Swedish players in Vancouver, it's become a natural feeder system.
