Nice to hear all these quality banjos alongside each other. I like the Yates and the Huber RB-75. This ad was paid for by a Gold Tone OB-150 owner.

They both sounded great to my ear. The Huber seemed to have a little more tone and the Deering seemed to have a little more presence. Its so hard to judge without actually trying them out. I wanted the Huber, but now, i seem to feel that the Deering is looking good. I'm in no real hurry except that the longer i wait, the more expensive it is!

I would love to see some comparisons of low and mid level banjos against high ends like this with one person playing the same song on each. I have an 82 Alvarez bluegrass special I bought when I was a teenager, and am just starting to play again after several years. It would be great to see what the differences are.

For sure, great request! I will say that the span between the banjos is not near as great now as it used to be...folks are making some really fine and affordable banjos nowadays!

Deering makes good banjos now but it took them til 2010 to do it. Their earlier rings and flanges were not slip fit amongst other issues, until Kruger worked w them from the Swiss foundry.

Why do all Deering banjos sound like they are playing through someone’s nose? Precisely why I play a Gibson and a Stelling.
@luminawarren8132 Жыл бұрын
Deering makes good product it just took them awhile to get their specifications together after 2010 their banjos sounded better.

I have a Huber resonator that came from that batch of veneers. They all have that odd little figuring near the bottom of the reso, where the figure goes a little against the purely lateral trend of the grain.

I bought a Huber Kalamazoo but had to swap out the neck for a wider one made by an Independent Luthier. The Huber necks are too narrow. Also, the strings sit to low to the head up next to the neck.

I have a banjo given to me by Jim Rae the Mayo Clinic engineer who designed the HR30 tone ring, that is the "R" on the tone ring. While it is a great banjo, I think a good Stelling is as good as any. I don't think there is any perfect banjo. Earl said that the new banjos are just as good as the old pre-war ones. When I played in the park in Ocala, Florida , a few years ago, I heard a good Derring played with a good Gibson. While they didn't sound the same, the Deering was just as pleasing. There was a Stelling there too and it was a good banjo, but it wasn't the best Stelling I ever heard. It's time to forget about the pre-war sound and move on. I heard a pre-war what looked a RB6, a beautiful bajo, that didn't sound as good as a banjo I built myself. I think the sound of a banjo depends on who is playing it more than the banjo itself.

I agree with a lot of this.

@rarebasses3 жыл бұрын
I can tell you for sure Ben and Adam and the crew are not in the selling banjo business for the money. They ain’t selling in bulk here buddy. Lol They do this for the students and the fans and as a service to us players that do not want to buy from a cut throat big box or guitar center type store. They honestly care about their customers. I like just a hour from the store and I know how much inventory they move… if they wanted to “play salesman” and sell in bulk they would need a much larger facility and staff. These guys are NOT salesman just selling merchandise but professional musicians doing what they love to service their fellow musicians! - Steve Workman
