One little correction from this: Caliban is a 152.4mm gun, not a 160 like I thought (cause I didn't check tanksGG, like an idiot). The overmatch happens up to 50.8mm, not 53mm.

did you know that AP and APCR shells still aren't guaranteed to pen even if they overmatch? this can be seen comparing very low pen guns with high caliber, like the german 105mm howitzer seen at tiers 4-5. Compare a PZ 4 H to itself with 105mm firing AP, and the 30mm plates still can non-pen at a high enough angle. Just like how a 150mm gun shooting AP at plates 74-50mm gets double normalization (double-caliber rule), firing at plates 49mm and lower have triple normalization (three-caliber rule/overmatch), normally this means this is a garanteed pen since its such a thin plate having its effective angle reduced so much, but, some guns (like 105mm L/28) have such low pen that its still not enough. However that gun against 25mm plates is almost a guaranteed pen and 20mm plates is a guaranteed pen, because there is also a four caliber rule for quadruple normalization, and a five caliber rule for quintuple normalization, and so on. This is why the Scorpion (tier 7 american TD) has 0 effective angle. Against itself, it’s nearly a 90 caliber rule.

the AP overmatch mechanic does not absoluely guarantee auto pen since it simply only means a much bigger amount of normalization than how much the double overmatch guarantees.

Its a fix for HE-tanks, that would otherwise do 25% to almost every tank they shoot at. This way you do low damage to heavy armor and get the satisfaction of doing bigger damage to less armored tanks. Great Video! The Community needs people like you desperately.

actually you can still bounce an ap round even if you overmatch. 3x overmatch only means you cannot _ricochet_ i.e the shell will always _try_ to penetrate. thanks to 2x overmatch however your normalization will be way more and you will almost certainly pen anyways. but if you take a low pen high caliber ap shell like in the kv-2, you can still easily bounce off of very thin plates. you can see for yourself on tanksgg

I have a short on my channel from where I get 1213 damage roll in the Death Star during the snowballs arcade cabinet. HE shells were "made more effective". So I must have got close to max possible non pen damage.

@@lncoming If it helps I do have some preliminary data. Also I would like to know the exact formula for credit earnings, I think that would be really useful to know. What I have found so far is that almost all prems have the same coefficient, with the exception of like 6 (I prob checked 1/2 of all prems so might be missing a few). Those 6 earn between 3-6.6% more credits base (if my assumption is correct that all credits earned are multiplied by that multiplier. Interestingly the BZ 176 is one of those 6 tanks and earns 5% extra credits than the rest XD.

Interesting. I wonder how spall liner interacts with frontline artylike personal reserves - I love to play KV-5 as a capper in this mode, with spall liner equipped. I am mostly shrugging off arty strikes but now you made me wonder whether the spall liner plays a role in that at all, or shall I replace it with grousers for more speed

Edit: now that WG has added Reliable Placement, can you redo this test with it? In typical WG fashion, the flavor text in game does not explain how the skill interacts with HE overmatches. It merely states reduced HE damage. NGL this has me shook a bit. I was always under the impression that HE couldn't overmatch, but at the same time, I never understood how post-nerf arta was able to splash my Maus for 450 every single shot. I also didn't understand why the damage values were always in the 350-500 range, seemingly unrelated to where the shell hit me (most arta having 800-1000 stun HE alpha). It made no sense that some tanks seemed immune to arta while others got mogged as if nothing had changed, but now that I know all those tanks getting dunked on are infamous for weak tops/decks/sides and that arta can overmatch without penetrating, it all makes sense. I think WG needs to remove this HE overmatch mechanic ASAP. Arty HE changes were billed as damage scaling relative to armor, but a tank with less effective armor is more arta resistant as long as the plates are thick enough to avoid overmatch, thus defeating the purpose of the arta changes.

That is not new. It was always the way that blocked HE did half damage. than subtracted the armor thickness plus minus 25% Rng was the damage. Bevor the rework it was the thinest armor part considered. After the HE rework it was the armor considered where the shell hit it which was in most cases a huge nerf.

I feel like I've witnessed groundbraking mechanic for HE-based vehicles, but missed the conclusions. Can we get a scenarios where is better to shot for overmatch instead of trying to pen? Like should I shot 60 degrees and over into Type 5 Heavy sides, instead of his cupola when I'm on FV4005?

There's really never a time to load HE instead of AP, if you know you can overmatch a tank. The AP will always do more damage than the HE. Why I show the Gonsalo is because it's the exception, where the HESH is listed as a higher caliber than the AP.

It's not an overmatch. Spalling is an effect where, due to partial or near penetration, the armor material in the area where the vehicle was hit is sent flying. Carry a spall liner.

I already knew that a non-pen was 50% reduction and another -armor thickness(according to wiki, but god knows when that was last updated), but didn't know HE had an overmatch mechanic. Spall liner being about as useful as tits on a fish is about par for WG; its much more noticeable how useless it is when being tagged by sky aids as compared to the whole 1-3 tanks still using any amount of HE.

And I am really confused because you say at 1:13 that HE does half the DMG when it doesn't pen and when it overmatches armor doesn't mitigate DMG. But in the shown clip it says -128 blocked by armor. So armor did mitigate DMG? @@lncoming

@@gamingwithluke822 In that clip, it doesn't overmatch. That clip was mostly to show post-mortem camera, which outright tells us that HE shell damage gets cut in half on nonpens. Damage does get blocked by armor if there's no overmatch involved.

EXCEPT if you are in arty then these rounds never pen. I dropped a 155mm arty shell on the top of a Foch where the armor is only 20 mm and all it did was knock a track off Zero damage on something that should have Easily penned and blown the tank up.
