For HFCS contributing the obesity epidemic, my understanding was that America's corn subsidies make HFCS extremely cheap. So companies are able to sell these very sweet products at a much lower price than if they had to use an unsubsidized sweetener. So we're in a situation where a bottle of soda and a bottle of water cost the same amount.

And because it's so high in calories, it's contributing to obesity crisis. Yes like other sugars, just a lot cheaper and widespread. (Great video as always though :)

@N G ok how about the fact that every living thing on earth is a GMO because of natural selection. It's a catch-all term that means nothing. Non GMO does not exist. The other major society-wide contributors to obesity aside from what you have mentioned here with regard to rising wealth / caloric intake, food chemistry, etc., is the changes in our societies related to an increase in private transportation (automobile) oriented planning and productivity enhancements away from physical labor. Regions within and outside the United States which have bike / public transportation planning that are walkable are statistically less obese in comparison to regions which are not. And, labor over many decades has moved away from physical components towards more sedentary activities due to productivity enhancements - automation. The latter probably can't be changed. But, the former can make considerable differences when combined with positive dietary changes away from processed calorie dense foods.

The reason I clicked on this video is because the title, but what you said did not exactly represent the title. Your argument was basically that HFCS is not any worse than any other sugar, and I basically agree. But the new information I have is that sugar IS bad for you if you eat it all of the time, and has absolutely, positively been proven to be a cause of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Dr Richard Johnson of the University of Colorado has evolutionary proof that sugar does contribute to obesity and metabolic disease. What Dr Johnson figured out is that fructose is a nutrient that most all animals use to gain weight for many reasons including migration, hibernation, and to store a little extra fat to survive the famine of winter. Think about it: Our ancestors would eat fruit which contains fructose, and the fructose would not only cause leptin resistance, energy depletion and prioritize energy for the brain. This is why fructose which is in sugar is so addicting. Our bodies want us to eat as much as possible in the short period of time in the fall when fruits are ripe so we can gain weight. Just check out his lectures. You will see that I'm correct, and you will agree. Fructose is certainly a cause of weight gain and metabolic syndrome.

Hello guys, maybe you can help me out here i remember watching a famous presentation from a MD on this topic from the early 2000s on KZbin (couldn't find the video sry). The point he was making is that fructose results in a higher procent of low density lipoprotein when broken down in the liver compared to glucose. Furthermore the low density lipoprotein then becomes into the veins and arteries ,because its so low density and can lead to blockages of the veins and arteries and therefore cause significantly higher risk for strokes and heart attack. The reason why fruits are still good for you is that you can’t consume that high levels of fructose and therefore your safe from strokes and heart attacks in your forties. Would appreciate a lot if someone can show me where he was wrong or what is missing in the picture Thanks.

Odds are you are referring to Dr. Lustig's presentation. If so, you can look up the articles/videos of counterarguments people have done on the claims he made in his presentation to parse out the information and make up your own mind. Alan Aragon did one a long time ago that I remember. For my own input, I would say that Dr. Lustig's error - and the error of many who ascribe to the carbohydrate-insulin model - is that he has an overreliance on mechanistic research/data and overlooks the real life studies which do not confirm their mechanistic predictions. Study: Effect of fructose on markers of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): a systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled feeding trials Relevant Finding: Isocaloric exchange of fructose for other carbohydrates does not induce NAFLD changes in healthy participants. Study: Metabolic effects of a prolonged, very-high-dose dietary fructose challenge in healthy subjects Relevant Finding: Ingestion of a high dose of fructose for 8 wk was not associated with relevant metabolic consequences in the presence of a stable energy intake, slightly lower body weight, and potentially incomplete absorption of the orally administered fructose load. This indicated that young, metabolically healthy subjects can at least temporarily compensate for increased fructose intake. Study: Saturated Fat Is More Metabolically Harmful for the Human Liver Than Unsaturated Fat or Simple Sugars Relevant Finding: Macronutrient composition of excess energy influences pathways of increased intrahepatic triglyceride (IHTG): CARB increases DNL, while SAT increases and UNSAT decreases lipolysis. SAT induced the greatest increase in IHTG, insulin resistance, and harmful ceramides. Decreased intakes of SAT could be beneficial in reducing IHTG and the associated risk of diabetes. The irony of the last study noted is that those who do ascribe to the carbohydrate-insulin model claim saturated fat has been unfairly demonized and does not have as big of a negative impact on health as has been claimed and that the real demon to be concerned about is sugar.

Humor, 10. Fisiology 10. Biochemistry 0. The claim is not made "for those reasons only", but is deconstructed here for the set of reasons that it can be. The problems are not only "purist" or "naturalist" only reasons. Biochemistry has shown that fructose is not a sugar you want to consume in a excessive quantity because of its metabolism and byproducts. Which is fine for you consuming regular fruit. The problem comes when you have high concentrated fructose which "crams" the sugar of tons of fruits in a one bite food. It taxes the biochemistry by producing residue that is both toxic and hard to chelate, allowing toxic chemicals resulting of its digestion to float around and cause problems in your liver and kidneys. That will indeed cause problems with the normal biochemistry contributing, among other things, with metabolic problems due to the damage to said organs. Any type of fructose concentrate is bad, but the corn is the one USA mostly uses. That is why diets use another ways, more natural ways, to add sugar to things have less of a problem. And I am not saying this is the ONLY reason, but I am saying it makes things worse, much worse, because it does.

100% diamonds and art somehow bypass morality. There’s some sort of justification for taking from ultra wealthy individuals benefiting from the blood diamond industry, but art museums are largely the product of philanthropy and the consumers of stolen art would have to keep that shit private afterwards. But they make it all look so sexy in movies, my brain doesn’t naturally register it as bad lol

Can you do a video on splenda, sweet n low, equal, & truvia? Could you explain which one you use and which you prefer most people to use? Thanks Mike
@muntster2 жыл бұрын
Non-nutrative sweeteners are all about the same really, as far as what they accomplish, which is to make things taste sweeter without adding calories. Just get the one that best fits your budget/taste/use. Sucralose (Splenda) probably has the most utility if you plan to bake with it. Simply put, be practical in your choice but don't over think it.

@@muntster False. Calories matter little. What matters is the glycemic impact and insulin factor, which is highly variable from sweetener to sweetener. Additionally sweeteners have a different impact on gut microbiome

@@brianlauren5618 The Energy Balance Model (EDM) is a far more comprehensive and evidence based model than the carbohydrate-insuline model (CIM). See: “The Energy Balance Model of Obesity: Beyond Calories In, Calories Out” by Kevin D. Hall, et al. Also, consider Liraglutide for example. It is a medication (injections) used for type 2 diabetes and is one of the most effective aids in weight loss despite the fact that it significantly increases insulin. Sorry, countless RCTs and metabolic ward studies, real life observations, and the laws of physics just do not support the CIM.

@@muntster Type 2 diabetes, cancer, and the overwhelming majority of disease can be remedied through ketosis and autophagy which is achieved with a low carb high fat diet. I checked out your resource and it is not credible. Kevin d hall works for the NIH which is not a credible source of information because it is funded by corporate interests such as the industrial food industry (which is reliant upon highly industrialized, low quality carbohydrates) and the pharmaceutical industry (which derives profit from disease). This is further illustrated by the fact that his published research is very low quality and frankly disregardable because of a fundamental lack of proper controls (doesnt even account for basic toxicology and physiological factors in his "studies"). He's an industry shill promoting propaganda that is friendly to major corporations because those major corporations fund the policy decisions and narrative direction of his employer. I didn't look specifically into the "energy balance model" specifically (all i saw was an energy balance model referring to climate change) but already it makes no sense since it is physiologically optimal for a human body to run off of ketones rather than carbohydrates.

@@brianlauren5618 I noticed you side stepped my comment regarding Liraglutide. I included it specifically to address your claim that “What matters is the glycemic impact and insulin factor…” Well, if what you say is true, why do you belive that despite Liraglutide significantly increasing insuline it still has a rather powerful impact on inducing weight loss? Such an outcome contravenes the carbohydrate-insuline model of obestiy.

@@josephpostma1787 no just juice. Too easy to overindulge because it's liquid calories and low fiber content for satiety. You're better off making a smoothie if you want a sweet drink. The exception I would say is celery juice which is one of the least caloric and contains much less sugar

Can you do a myth video about all calories coming from Hyde Lacy makes sources? I don’t understand the separation from high fructose corn syrup and any other sugar either.
@AngryOscillator2 жыл бұрын
Because no one has bothered to check the fructose content of stuff. This is actually one of the few times that 'health food' was a win for me as maple syrup (love the stuff) is like a 70% Glucose 30% Fructose split. Sucrose is 50/50. HFCS is defined as being 42%-55% Fructose according to the FDA. Maple syrup for the win (so long as you don't scale volume to sweetness)
