Just so you know, Gujarat is a drought prone State. Rather than focusing on chip manufacturing which is water intensive, India should focus on chip design.

India already has the most amount of chip design engineers in the world. They don't need to focus on something they are already experts in. Indian engineers design most of the semiconductor chips of major companies throughout the world including Intel, Nvidia, TSMC, Qualcomm, AMD etc. What India does not have… is chip FABS and manufacturing. Indian engineers design chips that are manufactured in other countries. It is way more efficient to build them in the same place they are designed.

@@ChiSa123 India cannot afford to build chip fabs which are extremely water intensive. Today every major city in India has a high risk for water scarcity. Also we need to consider the water resources needed to support India's high population. Recently Karnataka gave the order to cut down 100,000 trees for iron-ore mining. With only a focus on economy, we will end up destroying the country.

@@alileevil ...as Mr. Nitin Gadkari often says... there is no scarcity of water... There is only scarcity of water delivery and storage! If all the states would listen to the central government and cooperate with water transport and irrigation solutions there would be no issue. The central government is investing heavily in water resources. The hurdles come up when state governments do not assist or behave lethargic in terms of cooperation with the centre. The government is setting up a green belt to prevent desertification in and dry areas like Rajasthan. if the Karnataka government has done this, then they should look to mitigate this by replantation or transplantation of trees.

There may not be municipal infrastructure or connections in some parts yet... but there is no situation like Delhi or Bengaluru where you have to order water tankers because there is absolutely no water in the city. While I have nothing against India, but there is no possible way India can have a 22nm fab ready for commissioning in 2026 (0:54). They haven't even broken ground yet! For that to happen, India will have to outpace Japan's TSMC 28nm Kumamoto fab in construction time, and that fab was built rather quickly by a company with experience. I believe a 5 year timeline is more realistic as India is doing this for the first time and they do not have the expertise or the experience to build a semiconductor fab at that blistering pace.

the fabrication machine itself is one huge system that is a monopoly of ASML(protected by USA), the technology is refined, the only problem will be getting hold of global supply chain and increasing market in india.

@@DirectorOfTime First of all what you are referring to is ASML’s EUV lithography machine. You do not need EUV for 22nm. All you need is DUV machines, and you can get those from ASML or Nikon. Secondly, you are only speaking about lithography. Lithography is only one step in the fabrication of semiconductors.
