In this video we'll cover everything you need to know before buying a high mileage used Lexus GX 460. We'll go through all the extra costs we paid to get it home and all of the expenses for maintenance, repairs and upgrades in our first year of ownership in this long term review.
A big thanks to Big Two Toyota in Chandler for taking care of me on the throttle body and maintenance. Don't ask for the "Jake deal" or they'll throw you out : )

Lexus has/had a customer support campaign for throttle bodies. They’re known to fail. $200 for the throttle body is nonsense, counter price is somewhere around double what he paid. And of course eBay used has the chance of also being bad or failing in the future.

@@duaneafields I meant nonsense as in “you’re way underestimating parts costs”. I would open a customer support case and try and have it comped at a dealer, or at least ask for assistance, with it being a part that was involved in a customer support program.

I will also have Lexus do the 120,000 mile maintenance package it’s around $1,100. I’ll have them do it that way they can give it the once over & I’ll be back to good . I’ll do the little things after that. Thanks again and see you down the road !

You get a standard v8 and more off-road capability than you’ll ever need in the gx yet as of right now about 50% of used gxs’ are cheaper than 4Runners. The rest being equal. The newer gxs, gls and LCs are the modern suv enthusiasts rig IMO.

We own 4 Toyota products. Two GX'S and two third gen 4runners. They have a combined 1,200,000 miles. We abuse our trucks. We change oil every 25,000 miles. Off the top of my head I can tell you we have replaces two radiators. Around 12 coil packs. Two C.V joints. A alternator, plugs and wires. We have never put a timing belt on either 4runner. None of them are sexy. They don't get great mileage and they don't have an abundance of power but they quit.

@WastingTimeInTheWoods

cleaning the throttle body likely for the first time in 150k miles actually broke it. The bushings were shot from working against the build up and when they remover all that , the valve wouldn’t stay put. Maybe they tweaked it during the cleaning but I wasn’t going to split hairs at that point. Just wanted the truck running.

I had VERY similar experiences to yours. Bought a 2012 SUV in 2020. Wanted something a little newer, however 2012 was the last year of this particular model of SUV. Got it from one state over. It was about an $80 Uber ride just to go pick it up. I too paid for a pre-purchase inspection. As you mentioned, it was well worth it. The vehicle was/is in great shape however, as you pointed out, more likely than not, when someone is planning on getting rid of a vehicle, they tend to stop doing any maintenance in the years or months leading up to it. So, fortunately while I have not had any engine or transmission problems, in the past 18 months, I have replaced the radiator, new shocks & struts all around (TWICE.......but that's another story), a set of tires, a new battery, power steering flush, brake flush, transfer case service, front and rear differential service, and recharging the A/C system. I'm sure I might be missing a thing or two that I've bought. Again, all 'routine maintenance', but it has added up to a very significant amount of money, as I prefer to go to the dealer. I have had absolute HORROR STORIES (over the years) by going to (supposedly) 5-Star (Google) reviewed independent 'mechanics' (places that have been in business for decades). You take the vehicle in for "A", and they fix "A", HOWEVER, along the way, they've broken "B", while fixing "A", that you don't even find out about until months later. Just 'do the work yourself' sounds good, HOWEVER, if you're NOT mechanically inclined (and have never been), do you really want to START, by messing with a highly computerized $15 or $25,000 vehicle? Not to mention, I have no 'place' or space to 'work on a car', I don't know anybody who knows about cars (to help me), and my nightmare is to mess something up, be unable to get it back together, and HAVE to walk into the dealer (and be at their mercy), with a bunch of parts in my hand, saying, "HELP!" LOVE my vehicle, and hopefully, after putting all this money into him, I can get 8 or 10 years of relatively problem free driving life out of him. I think your point is............(and MY advice to anyone looking to buy a used vehicle), unless you plan on doing the work yourself, it would be wise get a pre-purchase inspection done AT THE DEALER and to budget (at least) $2,000 for 'routine maintenance' items over the course of that first year or so. $2,000 is a lot of money (for a 9 to 5 person), but my radiator alone was $550 with parts & labor.

That’s pretty close to what new 4Runners get interstate driving. Consistently topped out at 18.5(75-76mph). Because they’re shaped like a brick and really want for a 6th gear at 70+, their mpg does improve a few mpg if you keep them below 70mph.

I have a 2017 premium with 60,000 miles (bought new) and zero issues, mechanically speaking. There are a few areas I dislike. The cabin seems a bit noisy if you press in on some of the plastics or while going over bumps. They creak and make a cracking sound, so to speak. Lexus has mostly fixed the issue (under warranty) by disassembling certain parts of the trim and adding felt or quiet tape. I only take it to Lexus for service. It’s pricey but I feel it’s worth it. Having a well tracked maintenance service record by the dealer will add value, should I ever sell it. Good video and looking forward to more.

We got a 2011 with 123k miles for $18.5 a year ago. Scored a front set of Dobinsons 2" complete struts for $400 and $2.64 for the rear lift using washers on the air bag sensors. Have wheeled it hard a few times and never had to lock the center diff because ATRAC is amazing. Can confirm 11-12mpg with 33.5" Kenda Klever RTs ($800 for 5 of them). 4.56 gears would help a lot but I'm too cheap for that. Got a JW Roof rack ($787) to carry our giant Tuff Stuff Alpha tent as well as their rear tire carrier ($1,061). No maintenance issues so far 10k miles later. Taking it to Colorado for Christmas with the wife. We love it so much we got her an 04 GX470 as well. There is a ton of value if you don't use it on massive commutes. Be careful the GX bug is infectious. My dad has had a GX470 and has a GX460 now. My coworker also picked up a 2006 GX470. Thay are amazing cars especially if you have kids and love adventure.

Nice video. I have the same vehicle; same year. My biggest complaint is a rough ride over anything other than a glass smooth highway. Engine is low on torque too, so the trans shifts a lot at highway speeds. I am getting better gas mileage than you, though. I am 80% commuter and get 17-19 mpg at 70-mph. Drops quickly in town driving to 13. No major problems so far at 125,000 miles. Did have to change a leaky radiator, one side mirror, and a front wheel hub bearing. Otherwise no issues.

4x4 service at Lex/Toyota is fluid changes on both the diffs and the transfer case, plus greasing the propeller shaft and driveline. Sorry, Transmission is a separate service. Transmission service requires a special machine to regulate fluid change pressure, the diff and transfer cases are just a drain and fill service.

I gave that a try when I first got mine. It resulted in a 10-15% reduction in gas mileage for me which is what a lot of people report. That negates the savings for me not to mention the extra carbon build up. They are tuned slightly different, the ECU just retunes it to retard detonation when it detects knocks or pings I believe. Are your new tires larger than stock? That would dramatically lower your fuel mileage. I get considerably better mileage in our ‘15, also with E rated BFG’s, but in a stock size with stock wheels. 15mpg all around average, up to 21mpg on a highway trip, and 10mpg towing our 4500lbs TT. Maybe your driving habits? I’m sure the bad throttle body reduced your mileage, has it improved since the repair?

My tires are about 5% bigger than stock. I work from home and my family all goes to school or works within about a mile. My average trip is about 1.75 miles. I've never taken it on a flat hwy, only up to the mountains so I've never seen more than 18 on the hwy. So yeah, it's definitely driving habit / lifestyle related. I drive like a grandpa though so I would hope I would get a bit better. I've actually averaged 13.5MPG since the throttle body swap. What I showed in the video was that tank, but that's what I typically see.

@@WastingTimeInTheWoods Even in moderate temperatures, that's not enough distance to get the engine fully warmed up. Typically, the engine management system runs a little rich until the engine is fully warmed up. This is to "light off" the catalytic converter so it does better on emissions. My guess is that, even with all of your modifications and your location, if you drove longer distances, you'd see better mileage.
