Wow your attention to detail is impressive I believe even “the car care nut” would be impressed with your work. I just bought a 03 gx 470 (230,000 miles) and this channel is going to be a huge help.

Would like to point out a few things. Your attention to detail and proper procedures are awesome. It shows that doing so WORKS. Shortcuts don't serve anyone. Do it right; do it once. Wow are we (Dad) lucky for all the time working on this. You (seem) to do it most alone and in silence (for the video). My buddies/friends ask why I don't have more videos of everything I do. I am ALWAYS listening to something, often podcasts. I guess I could do it silently and over-record. Let me think about that. Uh no.. LOL. 2 WEEKS FOR SHIMS!? Oh my! And those reminded me of my youth and shims for the valves in my Cosworth Vega. Oh the memories. Great job! Appreciate your fine work!

Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate that 🙂. I only work in silence for videos, otherwise I always have music going. Not the most fun thing but it makes editing easier! I was a bit disappointed with Toyota's part fulfillment this time around. Oh well, we got there in the end. 2 weeks is definitely enough time to start forgetting how it all goes back together. 😆

you did such an awesome job. My head gasket went out. I might as well check valve clearance and lap the valves and rebuild the top end. God Bless. Also the screw to secure the spring loaded cam before removing the camshafts is the same screw as the valve cover. You can use one of the valve cover screws.

Gotta love the 2UZ I had my Timing Belt done at 181K as well and also overhauled the cooling and radiator system while at it as well. I recently dumped more money into it replaced the CV axles, wheel bearings, lower control arms, sway bars and upgraded to Bilstein 5100 all 4 corners and actually lifted her 1.75 front a teeny bit squat but made the truck much more aggressive looking and stance as well

You would want to check the starter on these, either rebuild em or replace them. They're under the intake plenum and can be a pita when they go out.
@PracticalEnthusiast Жыл бұрын
Had to do that job on an LS400 before. Good times!
@willamtaft5899Ай бұрын
Yeah they’re in the intake, so they’re a huge pain to get to, so why would I be “checking/rebuilding” it? Just pray it doesn’t fail and when it does, then begrudgingly go digging for it

Great video - apparently there is a filter built into the power steering fluid reservoir. Maybe that could stand to be replaced, too.
@PracticalEnthusiast Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I was wondering if there was a filter. I didn't see anything that looked serviceable in the reservoir itself. Might just have to replace the whole reservoir.
@GM-sk2wk Жыл бұрын
No problem, thanks for the video. Will come in handy when I change cam seals. And yes, from what I’ve read, the filter cannot be changed without replacing the entire reservoir. I’m about to change the one on my Sequoia.

At some point you’ll see the VSC Trac, VSC Off, Check Engine lights… that could mean time to replace your secondary air injection valves. There are two 10mm bolts on the driver side that’s a pita to put back in. While you’re in there, it might make sense to replace the starter as well. And the alternator will definitely go out some time after 130k miles. So plan on replacing it before it dies on you while driving on the highway at midnight in the middle of no where like that happened to me.

should have set cams on the T marks before removing belt to relieve rollover tension. Do you notice how the cam rolls over when you take off the belt?
@701Builder2 ай бұрын
I just did this job and yes that T is provided to unload the cams. When I removed the belt the cams didn’t budge. I have the service manual and it doesn’t mention it, it does say to do what he did. I found a similar comment as yours on another KZbin channel and after further research verified it and it helped so much. So thanks for commenting to help others.

anybody know more about the fitting type and hose size he made for the return line?

This is my first time learning about valve shims. Do small adjustments like this help with fuel consumption? Negligible? Would too much or too little gap cause noise?
@PracticalEnthusiast8 ай бұрын
I think fuel consumption would be fairly negligible. Too large a gap can definitely create noise but it doesn't usually damage anything. Too small a gap is what can cause damage.

Anybody here knows where do you find the Toyota service manual for this vehicle or an LX 470 etc? Considering purchasing one that's a bit older like 2003-2005 range but definitely need the service manual to do a lot of this work properly would help immensely to save some money and do it yourself.

you should of left it on the T mark than removed the timing belt, I saw the instruction on the toyota and they are confusing, the cams jumped because you went back 50 degrees.

Unless the engine cover had some sort of sound deadening material, I'd honestly just leave it off. The engine bay looks a lot nicer without it.
@PracticalEnthusiast Жыл бұрын
There's some noise suppression material on the engine cover, but it's mostly cosmetic.
