@@chrisbullock6477 The Fives are a totally different animal. You're comparing a powered speaker with all the electronics needed to drive them internal to the speaker whereas the YU Passives need an amp etc.

First off I'd like to say I really like watching your reviews, you guys are great. Secondly I'm looking at a pair of paradigm 800f's which are 3000$ Canadian after taxes but I've also been looking at the BIC ACOUSTECH PL-980'S at 950$ a pair through Amazon saying they're audiophile grade. I've seen reviews for them but I'd love to see you review them if that was possible 😉

Bought a pair with the stands based on this review. So happy I did. Love them. I have mostly vintage equipment including two pairs Magnepan and a pair of beautiful B&W 804s. I am somewhat concerned that the $199 alternatives are making me happier. Really just happy to have them. They are so affordable that I am considering gifting a pair to each of my kids for Christmas. On your question, I for one can be satisfied with a sub $200 speaker. I lived with the Kanto Yu 2 for long time on my desk top and only recently upgraded to the Kanto Tuk after watching your video because i wanted more power and clarity. Love the TUKs! One thing i would be grateful you could consider doing is comparing class d and class a/b amps. I have a Mytek Brooklyn Amp which is a class D but somehow always find that it does not give me the sound that a class a/b amp does - the clarity of highs and mids in particular. Look forward to that....hopefully. Thank you

Excellent video, thanks! Finding good enough is a tough ask for many in the hifi hobby. I inadvertantly got back into the hobby a few years ago shopping for a soundbar replacement. I got a PS Audio Sprout and a pair of Elac UniFi UB5's and am still floored by how good such a simple set up can for the price. Some nights I'll be listening and they'll still surprise me and make me smile. If your system still does that, then I think you're there. Run with that until that feeling goes away, I say! Just got these for the bedroom, I listen to a lot of podcasts and ambient stuff, believe it or not even stuff you sleep too sounds way better with good speakers and a Marantz. The thunder in a rain track is so much more relaxing to me with good low end. These are sounding great!

Over the last couple years I’ve slowly become a bit of a Kanto fan. I needed a new pair of desktop speakers for my computer and I didn’t have much space to work with so I bought the Kanto YU2 mini powered speakers and they’ve been great paired with a mini Fostex 6in sub for my computer needs. Also using the Kanto S2 stands for the YU2’s and they work great as well. So much so that I even bought their SP26PL stands for my bookshelf speakers in another setup and they’ve been awesome too. I don’t have a need for these speakers but I’m really happy to see that they make a good mix of stands, powered, and passive stuff that seems to do well for most people.

I hooked these up with aiyima A07 pro and Aiyima T6 Pro preamp . It is a spectacol of music and sound ! Very happy with them , also i hooked up a subwoofer Eris Sub 8 . Nobody can ask for more in a medium size room , really good quality sound , and i heard plenty of floorstanders . These speakers are really detailed and punchy all the same ! Superb combination !

Got a pair this week and I must say you are right. Really great cheap speakers. They are not as good as my B&W CM1 speakers, but are pretty close. Not fatiguing at all to listen to at all. They pair up really well with my old Onkyo TX2500 MkII receiver. Going to test them tonight on the B&K pre and Adcom 5500 amp with my sub to see how well the sound on that system.

I am currently listening to a 15 year old pair of Paradigm Titans. I think they sell today used for about $80 a pair and they are great. I have finally saved my pennies and have a pair of KLH Model 5’s on order but I have really enjoyed my time with my Paradigms.

The one takeaway everyone should remember from this video is one question Andrew mentioned at the end while taking in Kristi's thoughts -- WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO ACHIEVE? This is the most important question, so important it's in all caps, and it should always be the first one you ask. Not how much it costs. If you ask the first question, you may just be pleasantly surprised at how affordable it is to put it together. And yes, a $200 USD or less pair of speakers are absolutely suitable in terms of both quality and ability. There are plenty of affordable brands out there such as Kanto, Monoprice, Fluance, Mission that provide high quality for the dollar and go far beyond just good enough, punching well above their weight. You overlook gems like these at the expense of your wallet. In my specific case, what I was trying to achieve was a full Atmos 5.1.4 surround system that could envelop the entire living room of my small apartment with sound. That means 9 speakers minimum and a subwoofer which is a darn expensive proposition depending on what speaker brand you choose. And I absolutely pulled it off for under $800 US by keeping an open mind on affordable brands like Kanto. I've been in houses with dedicated home theater rooms and thousands of dollars more in sound equipment and speakers that haven't come anywhere near close to achieving the soundfield I have. Keep an open mind and you'll be amazed at what is possible if you think with your head and heart first and not your wallet.

I still have the Kanto YU5 speakers as my computer set up, and it still sounds amazing. I added an old 10'' subwoofer and this system can surpass any sound-bar at the same price. Love it.

I got the YU6s and greatly enjoyed them so when it came time to set up my living room I was ecstatic to find that Kanto came out with these cheaper passives! I'm loving the sound, though I do wish Kanto's speaker stands were more affordable. They're nice and heavy duty but can't be adjusted easily on the fly either :(

i did start with a pioneer early 70's or late 60's system the speakers sounded good to me but when adding a pair of early 70's celestion ditton series , the receiver seemed to doble the sound quality and power level , to record i used a high-end grundig reels deck that one could use several velocities making a big reel enough to record several Lps at the time was just fine , and where i live almost no one had good systems at least since the 50's wich were old good soundig but needles that damaged sound of a vinil record forever this didn't change much till second alf of the 80's , we had a dictatorship that only rich people could afford good systems , only in late 80's mentality of using anything that reproduce sound changed more with cds this in most of the population. vynil was seen as a bad source of sound for majority but when one played a record in a high-end system with a good thorens turntable seemed witch craft , i used to record cassettes from cds with a akai deck , anyone would choose the cassette sound as being the cd , theres ways of making a cassette sound more dynamic to one that never saw a good equipment and the sound of the cd sounded much better to the ones who didn't understand the concept of a diamond stylus, some would laugh and asked if theres was a diamond on the stylus because they couldn't see a lapidated gem or a valuable diamond in the stylus ..... hard to explain , Portugal only developed it self as a country starting in 74 , being a destiny of youth to untoutched beaches from all over Europe , even roads were frightening i remenver roads on mountains or hills not enough for two cars and no rails on the road to protect from a fall , regular speed 40 km/h , and in the south alf of the country ,only two lanes on a highway at the most 50 kms all together , but thousands would travel those roads with sucsess , bmw 2002 , the death car or widow maker , i had 7 of them till the 90's , lots were stoped and sold cheap after a real scare , in 95 while camping kids from germany would stop at a mint 2002 and ask if it was realky a bmw , a guy with a 70's opel senator from germany wanted to buy it from me, this for you to know how we were at a more simple level , this reflected most of the population , if i had a 74 mercedes i had to ve rich wich i had but cost me from a old woman who kept it pristeen 1.000€ today a full extras version of the w115 this in 95 , with less than 5€ of diesel i would drive for 490 kms this with 4 persons in the car at 120 km/h average speed with regular almost no trafic roads

I'm getting a par of these for my PC desktop 2.1 setup. Pairing them with a Kanto Sub6 and an Ayima D05 dac/amp. I also own a set of TUKs for use in the bedroom and I was so impressed with Kanto's sound and build quality that these YU's seemed like an easy slam dunk for my pc speaker upgrade.

I just got the passive YU4 speakers for my desktop a few weeks ago. I am so impressed with sound. These were supposed to be stop gap speakers until I could afford another brand that are 10x the price. But now that I finalized the pairing with my sub I don't feel like i'm missing anything. I am driving them with a Keces E40 integrated amplifier and an external DAC. I could have saved a few hundred dollars if I had made this purchase a year ago. I like the size and sound of them over the Emotiva B1+ speakers (that I tried first) in a near field set up. I wanted to replace the powered speakers that I had recently been using with passive ones to hear the full capability of my DAC and Amp. The Kantos were an economic decision, the size was right for my desk and the low price meant a low tariff for shipping my US Amazon purchase to the country where I currently live.

I run my desktop into a Schiit modi 3+ and into an older Adcom 535II I am very happy with them and bought them in large part due to your review. Hello Andrew and Kristi, I really enjoy your honest content and contrasting views on the products you review. This is my second buy after your Samsung Q70T review. In my case I picked up the 4" model to replace some vintage Koss M80+ speakers I have on my desk that although deliver some decent bass with dual 4" never sounded great at the top end of things with digital music. The 4" sound great and sparkle the top end nicely. With all the big sales going on I went ahead and ordered the 5.25" to compare since they should fit on my desk just fine. I am powering them with a loxjie A30 which @ below half volume is plenty loud enough in nearfield listening. Thanks

I bought the YU6 actives a couple years ago so I'd have some real speakers in my kitchen. Even with the crummy placement I had, I was still always amazed with how great the imaging was. I could point to specific instruments and know exactly where they would be if I were listening to live music. They are now out in my workshop as my shop speaker where they are still great (although white speakers in a metal shop was a poor choice). Kanto are some great budget speakers.

I'm not surprised that you really like these because the YU6 are really good, I bought a pair based mostly on your review. As for the question, there are many reasons or many ways to phrase an answer which all boil down to the same point. Price/size/perception are sadly, reflections that we put upon ourselves which isn't realistic.

For the past few years I had been dreaming about a new amp and new set of speakers to replace my 20 year old Sony home theatre receiver and KEF Q3s. I picked up a B-Stock Marantz PM7000N and came to realize that I had no reason to replace my speakers. The old tired Sony was the problem, with Spoty connect in the new amp I'm perfectly happy now. It really is true, if you like the way it sounds there is no reason to change something that isn't broken. I'll treat myself to a new set of DIY speaker cables and that will calm the upgrade bug for another few years hopefully. Thanks for the videos

I absolutely love reviews on products like this!!! I am currently looking around for a pair of more casual silk dome tweeter bookshelf’s. While I have a fairly impressive sound system fully built out right now. I am really interested in taking a break from Klipsch high efficiency, and wanting a warmer, smoother sound for media/casual listening. Andrew, I ask if this would be an excellent speaker to introduce my taste into silk tweeters? Will these give me that smooth warm sound that I am searching for? I’m kind of thinking character similar to Wharfedale Dentons.

I was considering the YU Powered (4 inch), with a 10 inch ELAC Debut sub as a soundbar replacement, the cheapest most decent combination I could figure out. But having seen this video and the one with the YU6 a couple of times has convinced me to consider these with a Sony STR-DH190 stereo receiver, and an 8 inch Monoprice sub, the cheapest most decent combination I could figure out. I really like the Matte Black as that makes them less distracting as a soundbar replacement.

I've not tried Kanto's passives, but am a huge fan of their powered speakers. I have the Walnut YU6 for my bedroom TV's audio. They'll blow away any sound bar. Nice video, mate!

Nice review and discussion of what is “enough”. I noticed last night that Costco has Klipsch “The Fives” for $499. Admittedly they only have the black finished version. Same price as the Kanto yu6s. As someone who has gotten off of the hamster wheel a few times but keeps finding themselves drawn back to the spinning madness I have found that The Fives (with the ports plugged and a sub) are really all I need. Mostly playing lossless from Apple Music through the most recent iteration of the Apple TV. I have been happy with this setup for over a year. That may be a record for me. At some point I may hop back on the wheel but for now I am content to listening to the spinning from a distance.

kanto really makes some great speakers! I'll never get rid of my YU4's; they were great as my first speakers for my vinyl setup, and now as my desktop speakers. I can absolutely imagine these passives would be perfect for most. to answer the QOTD, I think it plays a big part in our perception of performance, because virtually everything in society always associates that anything expensive is luxurious, and if it's luxurious, it's amazingly high quality. I do feel to some degree that more expensive can in a lot of instances also mean high quality, but there's so much that is good quality and cheaper, especially with speakers. Everyone likes something different. a speaker that is thousands will sound bad to someone, and a speaker that is 100 will sound good to someone else!

They are made in Oregon and primarily used by custom installers. I have them in a 5.1 ( soon to be a 7.2 when my new reciver gets off the damn boat) set up. Great review and reflections, Andrew/Kristi. There is such a thing as "good value", and these little guys seem to belong in that category. If they offer what a listener wants/needs, why spend more? As you note, it's the matching of components that produces the sounds, and you make clear that some pairings of amps work quite a bit better than do others. It might - might - make sense to spend more in the interest of longevity. I shelled out what for me was a lot of money back in 1991, but I'm still using the Conrad-Johnson amp and pre-amp, the VPI turntable, and the Snell E-IIII speakers that Evan Fusco at Stereo Exchange in the Village put together for me way back when. Both speakers have needed foam replacements, and cartridges have been swapped out, but other than that the components have continued to work well and sound great. They're broken in. My Sony DAT recorder/player gave up the ghost, though; pity. I don't know that I'm "happier" with the resulting output than I would have been with something less expensive, but I've received thirty years' worth of good times.

I'm really tempted to build a 2.1 system around this speakers for my bedroom just because of this review (of course, after listening to them). I don't care how much a speaker cost but the way my music sounds through it. Even though I have spent lots of money in audio in my life, I like to find special and cheap products that I can recommend to other people that are scared to spend too much without knowing the results. I think it's very important that this kind of product exist, because they reaaaally show how the law of diminishing returns work.

I don't know what the size of your living room is, but maybe look at the M-Lore too. It's is surprisingly capable and nearly as good as the Lore Reference for less money. Also, maybe stay tuned for Sunday's video before hitting buy now on bigger, sub $1000 speaker. Just sayin'. 😉

I have the Kanto YU powered and love them. I ended up returning the YU6 due to size as I needed a true bookshelf speaker for our cabinets. System was not the cheapest route as I got a sub8, Schiit DAC and Echo Link…but it allowed me to make it a smaller footprint to blend in with our living room. For me I would much rather spend money on furniture than speakers. I often see very expensive setups that are not aesthetically pleasing. If you can get good sound for 500 bucks, put the rest of that money towards the room.

I think the kantos have a beautiful design. Very understated and the curves are beautiful. I have a set in white coming as my desktop system paired with a jamo 808 as that’s the only sub I can reasonably fit in that area. I also have a full Sonos atmos surround system in that room and so the kantos will be 90% for gaming and KZbin, and 10% music. It’s just too easy to airplay to Sonos and it sounds so good. I’m really excited to get these kantos. These are the third set of speakers I’m trying in this setup.

When I saw the title, I thought it was a new CheapAudioMan video! Glad to see more wallet-friendly options for us more budget-minded enthusiasts. I've seen and enjoyed many of these, but I guess our definition of 'budget' gear might differ a bit :) For example, right now I'm looking for a replacement receiver for my setup, and have resorted to looking at tech over a decade old to find something that fits my 'how-much-I-wanna-spend-right-now' budget vs 'features-I-need-right-now' checklist. Yes, it's not future-proof, and I'll be missing out on a lot of bells and whistles, but with the current chip shortage / price hikes / shipping costs to one of the most remote places on earth / general icky-ness around - it currently seems to be the 'best' option available.

If you like the Fluance XL8S, you'll like the SX6. They are similar to the XL8S' sound signature, but rear ported, so you can obtain better boundary gain.

I've watched this over and over. I'm trying to decide between these and the Q3020i. The Q's only entered the conversation because I'm in the UK where the Q's are £30 cheaper. But I saw some measurements on Audio Science Review and the Q's have a very jagged Estimated In-Room Response compared to the measurements for the Kanto and the Kanto's appear easier to EQ properly. Kristy gave the Kanto's dialogue high praise, so that's definitely edging me in that direction.

THANK YOU for reviewing affordable components. For similar sound and better looks, maybe consider the Jamo S801PM, especially with the magnetic grills off? The little Jamos start rolling off at around 70Hz, which may be a deal breaker for some, but for powered speakers under $150, a screaming deal. Thanks again for a great review.

Then conduct a shootout with speakers like Snell Type E ii or E iii KLH Model 5 (original) The Advent Loudspeaker Klipsch Heresy 1 or 2 ADS L710 or L810 JBL L100 Century Bose 901

When I was looking for a budget speaker, really doubted to get the Kanto YU 6 based upon your review. But I already had the ifi Zendac to drive my sennheiser HD 660S I got as a gift from my wife. I eventually ended up buying the Jamo S801 PM speakers for the look and your review of the bigger brother of those speakers, for about €199 (included with taxes), which was a better offer than the Kanto's in my region (€460). Still doubting if I should have gone for the kanto's, (looks and your raving review) but the price gap was just too big to explain to my wife why we needed them to build out my home office. I looked at passive speakers, there is more of a choice, but then I would have to upgrade my dac/amp, didn't, and still do, know anything about the power and so on that they would require. It's really it's very difficult for a novice to start and the prices are all over the place.

I've bought a pair of PreSonus Eris E4.5 BT speakers during the Summer. Connected them through their Bluetooth connection with my MacBook Air, and they have been happily streaming Apple Music through Apple's Music app. And streaming Qobuz and my own music collection through Audirvana Studio. Their sound quality is a huge improvement over my old HK 5.1 set. Not very expensive either, and they are more than enough to be used in my appartments living room. For me, I prefer to listen to music. And for me, it doesn't have to be a highend system and speakers to make me happy :) Judging your review, these Kanto's would fit me just fine :)

I have the Kanto YU on my desktop. My source is Spotify on an old iTouch. They are on 9inch speaker stands so it's almost like wearing headphones. I love them! My main system is Cambridge Audio AXA35 integrated amp, AXC35 cd player and Pro-Ject EVO Carbon TT with Klipsch RP-600mii's. I'm actually considering selling the Klipsch and buying the Kanto Passives. I feel like the Klipsch are too big for the room.
