I was clearing out a big rock that was jammed in a crusher in NZ 48years ago when I heard the electric motor that powered the crusher start up! I was so lucky to get up and out within 1 or 2 seconds before it was in full crushing motion again. The stupid old bugga in the control tower got fired on the spot. I got one helluva fright. It was locked out but it was overridden by the control tower. The company was River Shingle and Sand, a Lower Hutt based company. Floods were also a common thing, the Hutt River being notorious ever since colonial occupation in 1840. The company was shut down permanently after another fatal accident occurred. An electrical maintenance team were doing a regular check on the switching board and there was an explosion in the faces of the two men that had the force to elevate them ten meters up and over onto the state highway to be hit by fast moving traffic. Health and safety wasn't around in the early 70's to my knowledge and the management frowned upon it when the labouring staff brought the issue to mind. Sorry for the late replies to everyone but I'm not computer savvy and was unaware of your reply's.

I worked at Fresh Kills Landfill for 28 yrs as a Tractor Operator. We had our own Rock Crusher. We loaded the Crusher with a 6 yd loader. The material came from all parts of the City, mostly demo from raised buildings and roads. But, sometime we would get in material from excavations. We had to be extra careful of "dinosaur eggs". Smooth sided oblong shaped rocks about 4-5 in diameter and 6-8 feet long, that looked like giant dinosaur eggs. The jaws couldn't get a grip on them, so they would end up bouncing up and down continuously. Like a child trying to hold a slippery bar of soap. We would have to stop operations completely, and use the hydraulic hammer to break them. But, sometimes they were very hard. When that happens, we would have to put chains around them and pull them out. We lined the entry road with the rocks. Visitors would exclaim, "What lovely rocks." If only they knew that each one cost us hours in lost productivity. The crushers gone now. They 'spun' a main bearing, and since the dump was closed (We used the stones from the rock crusher to build roads in the dump.) the City didn't want to spend the $125,000 to replace the bad bearing. So, they sold the entire crushing plant. (Crusher, shakers, and 4 mobile conveyors.)

@AKUJIVALDO Yes, the whole flywheel assembly was fused solid. Not an easy fix. It's not like you can just press out the bearing and press another one in. That machine cost more than $5,000,000 dollars new. The flywheel assembly is the "main" part.

I used to operate crushing plants and it wore my back out before I was 27 years old. I used to get up into the hopper to break down oversize boulders like this one. Not bragging but I could've broken this rock (and much bigger) with a spalling hammer, in most cases. You've got to be able to pick the right places to hit, and just work your way around the boulder. Sometimes boulders were incredibly hard and would just bounce up and down in the jaws, shaking the shit out of everything. I had to often take the crusher out of gear after idling down, and then I would have to get into the jaws and sling the rock with chains so it could be lifted out with an excavator. Bloody hard work in a quarry but I was exceptionally fit from it. One day I was operating a mobile crusher with much smaller jaws than this one and the bloke loading the hopper had missed a boulder that was about twice the size of the one in this clip. He tipped the load into the hopper and the boulder rolled down and just ripped off the walkway beside the screen like it was made from paper. I worked HARD and unfortunately it wrecked my back and my boss (family company) paid me very poorly in the process. I cared about the company but they just used me. They are now multi-millionaires and I'm on a disability pension. Justice will catch up with them one day, I know that. God will punish those greedy people.

I worked in a quarry. I was in a 400 size excavator separating rip-rap from a blast. I was tasked with sorting out the big chunks from the more granular stuff. I was more than fast enough to overwhelm the loader guy, and he had a 7 yard bucket, which he would feed into the shaker. The idiot that monitored the jaw was CONSTANTLY in the hut, smoking his whatever, even though it was in the high 90s, and no A/C in the hut! I was a good enough operator to hide the occasional boulder in the part of the pile that the loader guy was scooping from, without him seeing it. He would be shaking the bucket, and, BROAM, here comes this huge rock! He would look over his shoulder at me, and I would shrug. The guy in the jaw would come out of the hut, and give me the finger. I would give it to him back, and mutter, “I love you, too!”

I worked in a limestone quarry as an operator. And depending on what I was loading the trucks with, and what all was in the shot, I’d have a different number of beeps I’d give them so they knew what they had in their truck and where to go with it. No more than 3 different things tho. It’d be 1 beep-blue stone, 2 beeps-red stone, and 3 or more beeps was BOULDERS. Now, I always made sure to emphasize the trucks with the big boulders so they would know to not head to the crusher. It’s one thing having a load of red getting mixed into the blue surge pile, but a load of boulders could shut us down lol Well, needless to say, they still did it a few times anyways, this one time being the absolute worst lol I loaded the truck up with 2 boulders, as they were an entire truckload by themselves, and sent them out. Now, they should have been back fairly quick as our hammer pile was just up the hill. But when I saw a different truck come down the hill before him I panicked lol I HEARD the rocks land in the crusher, and someone on the radio say,”Holy $h1t, those things are bigger than my pickup truck!” Lmao That was almost worth the week they took to repair the damage

@@dangeary2134 He was definitely in the chute to start. Aside from that, there are still some issues here. He's standing on a half inch piece of steel siding on the shaking conveyance, not harnessed to anything for fall hazard. He is swinging a 4lb sledge at a boulder not wearing safety glasses which is a hazard for chipping rocks. And I know rebar is technically not incorrect, but get this poor man a real scaling bar.
