Low Position, High Sound: Mastering Vocal Projection
The voice has to go up while the position remains low and open, projecting the sound into a low larynx and open throat-‘Gola Aperta.’ This causes the sound to reflect upwards, enhancing the natural vocal color of each person.
Training to develop an open throat and a low larynx is essential, eventually becoming a natural reaction of the body. This old-school approach might be challenging for beginners to grasp or explain, but it’s rooted in traditional vocal practices.
The voice must always be ‘covered’ yet remain open. As one of my mentors; Martinucci would say, ‘Aperto ma coperto’-open but covered. ‘Si copre fuori, dentro rimane sempre aperto’-it covers outside, but inside it remains always open. The key challenge is to avoid modifying the pharyngeal and tongue positions to ‘cover’ the sound, which can create a falsely dark color. Instead, a true open throat brings out the voice’s natural color, the real dramatic or lyric sound; reminiscent of classical techniques from the past without artificial color manipulation.
