Seeing these older episodes where Prickly and Finster are very antagonistic is interesting, considering how much we learn about these two in later episodes regarding their personal lives and relationships (especially in the movie). Also, to answer your question regarding Menlow serving a mint to Prickly. It's not shown here, but in later episodes, it's revealed Menlow is the Student Aid for Miss Lemon (Principal Prickly's secretary). He spends his Recess time in the Office helping her. The mint thing was something he did by choice since he's also a pretty active Brown Noser.

The reason the faculty is ‘mean’ is because this show is partially based on Hogan’s Heroes. As such, Principal Prickly and Ms. Finster are the elementary school version of Col. Klink and Sgt. Schultz, with Ms. Grotke taking Schultz’s nice aspects.

@@kelsey1467 I don’t think the length matters. I think about the episode Economics of Recess and how the writers were able to condense capitalism into a nugget that’s digestible for kids but something the adults can look deeper at and both can still follow the story well. Then the Christmas episode which is a 22 min special, but the crisis of knowing if Santa is real is monumental for kids. It depends on the stories and again the fact that they can get into some real effective commentary in 11 mins is impressive

Now that I think about it, the schools I went to never had playgrounds that close to the school. Same goes for the ones I see while I'm out driving. They were a moderate walking distance away from the building, and were often separated by either a small road used by the school buses and/or had fencing around the playground. I never gave much thought to it at the time, but I presume it's to prevent potential damages to the buildings if any students are using sports equipment.

@Nintendotron647 ай бұрын
Regarding why principals tend to get portrayed like Prickly, I think I might have some insight. Recess (and many shows like it) was produced in the 90's. As someone who grew up during that period, I and most of my peers saw the principal as an iron-fisted authority figure whose role was to keep the status quo. At the time, the "status quo" was an authoritarian educational environment in which every apsect of a student's life was dictated for them, and the golden rule of the classroom was, "Sit down, shut up, and do as you're told." An artifact of the past, which, to be honest, has taken some time to completely neutralize. While I am aware that education today has begun to move past this image, the stereotype is, unfortunately, still alive and well in society.
