I really cried at this episode when I was a kid. I wished for a teacher like that guy but never realized that I could find a teacher like that if I just paid attention at the people around me. I was such a goofy dumb kid who didn't know anything at all.

Thanks for sharing this. I think a lot more students than we realize need this. 👍

5:02 Maybe it's different now but when i was in elementary school, we did indeed have student council, first 1 boy and 1 girl got elected from each class, then they went on to the whole school elections: 4th graders were running for secretary, 5th graders ran for vice-president, 6th graders ran for president. Everyone who lost those elections still went on to sit on the council. They started skipping the individual class step by intermediate school. But that was a LONG time ago and i'm from Canada. Watching this reminds me how fortunate I was to have several really amazing teachers growing up. In particular in 10th grade Ms. Cross my drama teacher who played a huge part in helping me overcome my social anxiety issues. Without her I never would have had the guts to get up on front of the school and act on stage. It helped me find my identity and the bullying I dealt with up until suddenly stopped because I gained self-confidence. Sadly, she passed away about 2 years ago. But she is pretty much a local legend, a lot of kids she taught have now dabled in acting & music and have found some success. The other was Mr. Earle, who was a very smart man and was a perfect teacher in 12th grade for "introduction to Law" since he loved debating things with us. Often at the end of class he'd quiz us on current events or other trivia and give out small prizes for the first one to get it right. (I remember ending up with tons of bags of caramel corn the day after halloween killing it on world capitals 😂). Kept in touch with him for a while after I graduated as he lived in the same neighborhood very nice man. Sadly, he passed a few years ago as well. 😢 I could go on for hours here, but those are the two that stand out to me.

Hey! Thanks for sharing some of these experiences. So many of us have that one (or more!) teacher that had a positive influence on us and helped us get through school by showing that they really cared. I'm sure that if you feel this way about them, that others carry them in their memory also. Thanks for watching!

Ever seen the Peanuts special "You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown"? Linus does in fact learn the hard way that a school/class "President" has no real power. I think there was even a Sabrina the Teenage Witch episode about that where the principal flat out admits that student council/"gov't" is in fact mostly a popularity contest.

If you look closely at Mr. Bergstrom’s belt, you may notice that the Texas outline is the same shape it is today. The outline of Texas looked very different in 1830, when it was under Mexican rule; back then, the border was marked by the Nueces River, and the modern border marked by the Rio Grande came much later.

True! Maybe he had a hard time finding an 1830s Texas belt buckle on Amazon. 😂

It’s crazy how much this episode mirrored my life! Was it written about me? My high school English teacher was also “Mr. B.” He wasn’t Jewish but had the same dark-haired Mediterranean look and deeply cared for every student, just like Lisa’s teacher. I felt so understood by him and admired his empathy. I didn’t have a crush on him, but I worried it looked like I did. By senior year, I wanted to thank him before graduating, but it never happened. The last time I saw him was in the stadium audience after I got my diploma-we locked eyes but didn’t wave or smile. Two years later, when I went back to visit, he’d already left for another school. That’s why the train station scene nearly brought me to tears. Not even once did I verbalize my gratitude. Watching this episode reminded me I’m not alone and helped me move on better. How art imitates life.

I grew up near a public magnet combo-middle-high school (HB Woodlawn), and it operated on this model that, as I understand, was semi-popular in the 70s and then faded basically everywhere else-teachers aren't teachers but co-learners in a learning community, students call teachers by their first names, etc. And, the reason it's a little relevant here: the students in the school actually have legitimate-to me, shocking-authority/responsibility. For example, they recently relocated after like 5 decades in one location, and I randomly look at the minutes of a student board meeting ... and I saw that the students had voted to have a railing installed on the roof, which students were already able to access, for safety purposes. FWIW there's a lot of reasons to be skeptical of the model and its scalability, but I find the fact that, under the right circumstances, it can work ... just really fascinating.

11:52 You’re not going to believe this, but the ancient Egyptians didn’t really know what the brain was for (they thought thoughts came from the heart), so they ground the brains of the mummies up into a liquidy substance.

That subplot about Bart running for class president reminds me of the SML video “President Jeffy!” that I want you to see. It starts off with a student running for class president, but it doesn’t take long for it to escalate to him abusing his alleged power.
