Harold is in the 4th grade, but he's a few years older than the other kids in his class due to being held back, turning 13 in the series. He's kind of a bully, but he's also insecure and can be a huge crybaby at times, often screaming "mommy" and running away when his actions get him in too deep. This isn't the only time he gets into some serious trouble with Principal Wartz. Speaking of Wartz, I only now see re-watching this show as an adult how unprofessional and petty his short temper is. I really would love to see this "school constitution" he keeps citing, because some of the claims that he has made about what it says are suspect, and even ludicrous in some other episodes. At times, I'm convinced he's making this stuff up and hoping the kids don't notice.

Hey, arnold is a show that's very unique among its contemporaries because it discusses a multitude of topics that aren't usually explored for a younger audience. Alcoholism is explored through one of the main characters' mom of all people, and world history is shown through a neighbor's past in the vietnam War and a grandpa's in WW2, where he supposedly give Hitler a wedgie. The creator really wanted to show that complex topics should not be off the table for kids as long as they're handled with understanding as well as entertainment.

"Hey Arnold" is one of my top 8 favorite Nick shows of all time! The show explains about Arnold (the main character of the show) who does all he can to help solve everyone's problems on a daily basis. In my eyes, he is the most reasonable character in Nickelodeon history. Speaking of suspension ... I've never had out of school suspension before. But I did serve IN SCHOOL suspension, all day long, when I was a freshman in high school! Couldn't go to class, or go to lunch. Nothing like that. Had to stay in there due to an altercation I had with another classmate who was nothing but a bully. Reason I got it was because I picked up the table that he was sitting on and he fell. And I wound up getting it. I only did it to stand my ground to him because of the way he treated me. After the entire day of ISS, I came home with a pounding headache, couldn't do anything but lay in bed. It was horrifying. Now if you're going to think about doing more "Hey Arnold" episodes, I would recommend reacting to "Teachers Strike" (season 2, episode 18b).

In my school people did get suspended for different reasons. There was also a thing called isolation where you are still in school but just not in any classes for the day. Just working elsewhere. And that can happen for different reasons. I remember a girl that once got taken out of class because she came into school with a pink streak in her hair. Also, the teachers were able to call for a senior member of staff at any time if they felt they needed to and have the student go with them and be dealt with by them.

I always wondered why Principal Wartz, Mr. Simmons or the school in general never contacted Harold’s parents regarding his suspension. With all the stunts Harold did as well as his behavior, the school should have contacted because regardless if he is suspended or not, they are still responsible for his safety since he’s a minor and the parents were not present or notified. I know this show was in like the late 90’s and early 2000’s, but there is no way this would exist today since schools would be liable for student’s safety.

It would be its own video.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't Wolfgang spraying Warts outside the school at the end with the fire extinguisher qualify as assault at that point?
@SchoolPrincipalReacts5 ай бұрын
It could be, yes. It would be up to the police (if called) to decide that. With things that are not only illegal but against the school handbook, police actions and any action taken by the school are separate.

I never got suspended in school. However I found that often times the punishments were a bit harsh. I always though a week for swearing seemed very excessive. As someone who swears a lot (even when I was in school) I just learned to be careful not to do it around staff (and of course never in a way that could be considered bullying) Also 5 weeks suspension? That’s basically impossible to catch up on
@SchoolPrincipalReacts9 ай бұрын
Yes, a week for swearing seems a little excessive.
@Brandon992299 ай бұрын
When I was in school, a student could only be suspended up to a week. A suspension of a week could be appealed to the city Board of Education. If the Board heard the appeal during the week, and ruled in favor of the student, then the suspension would be overturned and any days already missed would be counted as excused absences. If the Board heard the appeal after the suspension was over, and ruled in favor of the student, then the week the student was gone would be counted as a week of excused absences. 9.9 times out of 10, the Board would rule in favor of the Principal though.
@Brandon992299 ай бұрын
Also, If a student had enough suspensions where their time suspended amounted to at least 30 days of being suspended in a school year, they were sent to an alternative school for the rest of the year.

The thing is Harold is approaching the situation like a cartoon..whIch yes hey arnold IS a cartoon but one that runs of a flexible reality that can vary in how it works. His schemes dont work cause while this is a cartoon its not a zany wacky cartoon like say looney tunes or ren and stimpy. On the flipside wartz is also acting a little exaggerated to how a disciplinarian would be in real life but not too unbelievable from what might happen in real life.

Since you’re doing Hey Arnold episodes here’s some episode suggestions if you’re interested. "Hookey": Arnold and Gerald skip school, but their day is ruined by their fear of being found out. "Phoebe Cheats": In this variation of "The Tell-Tale Heart", Phoebe plagiarizes from a poetry book and uses one of the poems as her entry in a poetry contest. She wins, with her prize being a trophy resembling poet Emily Dickinson. Then, the trophy haunts Phoebe into confessing. "Crush on Teacher": Arnold becomes infatuated with Miss Felter, a substitute teacher, thinking she returns the feelings and that they are having dinner at her house. He later realizes that the one she invited was her fiancé, whose name is also Arnold. "Hall Monitor": Phoebe becomes hall monitor and asks Helga for tips. She becomes overwhelmed by the "power" and soon everyone wants the old Phoebe back - even Helga, once she realizes Phoebe's also giving her detentions. "Harold the Butcher": As punishment for shoplifting a ham, Harold is forced to work for Mr. Green at his butcher shop for a week. At first all he does is mess up and annoy Green. Later, after his work shift to pay for it is over, he soon learns that he actually likes his new after-school job and does not want to stop working there, much to the dismay of Mr. Green (at least at first). It is not until Mr. Green's annual big sale that the butcher realizes Harold's help is needed and appreciated. "The Aptitude Test": Helga thinks she's dim because she failed an aptitude test at school, only to discover she received Harold's test score, and vice versa. "Career Day": Arnold gets paired with the grouchy Jolly Olly Man as part of Career Day, while Helga gets paired with a police officer, Gerald with a fire-fighter and Phoebe with Ernie at the demolition site. The other kids think it is the best job, as he gets to be around ice cream all day. Arnold helps the Jolly Olly man be nicer to his customers and please his boss, who happens to be his dad- whose just as grumpy. "Student Teacher": Helga's sister Olga comes home for spring break and becomes a classroom aide in Helga's class, much to Helga's dismay. "Phoebe Skips": Phoebe is promoted to the sixth grade, but ignores Helga when she tells Phoebe that her new so-called "friends" are just using her to do their homework. She learns the hard way when a younger girl is also moved up to 6th grade, and her "friends" ditch Phoebe for the new girl. Phoebe runs crying to Helga, who welcomes Phoebe back and plots to get back at the older girls. "Back to School": After Grandpa tells Arnold that he never got his grade school diploma, Arnold convinces him to come to go back to school at P.S. 118. "Egg Story": Arnold and Helga must care for an egg for a school project about parenting. Meanwhile, Rhonda and Harold are project partners and must also take care of an egg

I remember when i was suspended and i wasnt even told..didint go over well when my principle went a little nuts when he saw me. In fact every year id get suspiciously suspended without explanation..i found out later that it was only durring standardized test periods. Cause of poor academics of some kids he dididnt want them to make him look bad so hed just boot them out so they wouldnt be there to take them.
@blankblankness29719 ай бұрын
That sounds awful. When in doubt, refer to the student handbook and try to find the offenses that warrant suspension.

Would have been more realistic if all that was on TV were old reruns or daytime talk shows that wouldn’t hold a kids attention. Kids would be at school, it’s after school hours when new episodes for kid’s entertainment get released. But it’s certainly more entertaining. Keep it up. I like your insights.

I can see why getting a D in school was different than from getting ABC in an F. I could definitely see why that it was different back then but the point you made was pretty awesome. I’ve gotten amazing and I was in school most of the time, but you know I wasn’t really that smart lol but the point you made was pretty cool. 👍
@ranelgallardo70319 ай бұрын
The fact that Ds don’t exist anymore is shocking to me. I graduated high school in 2009 so this is news to me. Also I have to say as someone who has been suspended (I hit another boy in class btw, I was that combative in class cause of bullying) I agree with you that the fact the school NEVER called the parents that he’s suspended was the most unrealistic part of the episode. My parents took away the TV, video games, and computer (Internet was around then) when I was suspended. So that’s another unrealistic part.
@joecrazy98969 ай бұрын
Wait, they removed the "D" as a grade? Why? That just seems like a pretty odd decision.

Harold is mostly a bully he's actually a teenager and got left several times and is in the 4th grade when there's no episode focusing on him he's just a background character unless there's a scene with him.
