Although archaic, it’s actually correct. The origin is from the Romans. If the emperor thought you did a good job he would stick his thumb down to signal you to go back to your cell and recover. If the emperor thought you did a bad job, he would stick his thumbs up as a way of saying “you’re getting executed”. For some reason, these interpretations flipped somewhere along the line.

I went to Aviation HS in NYC, and for about 30% of people in my school, they come from far away places like the bronx and long island. They have to be awake and traveling by 4:30 or 5 if they even hope to reach school by 7-8 am. For them, 6am isnt bad at all.

Highschool absolutely sabotaged my mental health because my parents could see every single grade and what assignments I didn't get perfect. In college I have nobody breathing down my neck about my assignments being perfect and I'm much happier in college, having the freedom to learn what I want whenever I want and talk to whoever I want to, compared to highschool where everything is determined for you except only being allowed to pick a single elective.

I had no intention of going to college because I jumped right into the workforce. And the best part about it all: I could save money on more pleasure things that were more enjoyable to me like traveling. College just is not worth it to me. There are so many other ways to be successful in life besides just having a degree or certification.

There really are a lot of different ways one could be "successful"(very subjective term honestly) and live a comfortable life compared to going to college where student loans may be huge(eg.the US). Idk if anyone will notice this comment but it will definitely vary from person to person - I had the dead opposite results where highschool felt awful and grinding but college actually feels LOADS more balanced + social + easier to accomidate my sleep schedule around, so who knows! I'm still just 2 weeks in to college, but I can notice a couple of differences: - You are expected to be responsible of your own works. Teachers in school would remind you about homeworks and even extend the deadline just for you to at least finish. In college, being late by 1 second already means 0 credit, you can contact the professor for a replacement assignment but sometimes they don't care. - The amount of assignments per week is larger than it would be in highschool. You might even need to dedicate all your free time to working if you're bad at time management. It depends on the major though, some are more free. - Events are now mandatory. Back in school you can just choose to not attend competitions or exhibits, but my college has an activity credit system that is required for graduating. So you need to manage time for assignments AND attending events, it can be exhausting. College is simultaneously flexible yet also busy. And for an ADHD guy like me, I can tell I am not going to do well...

For me, high school was the 3 easiest years of my life... I did go to a shit high school and learned close to nothing and our classes started at like 10:00. I'm going to college now and I'll say the biggest difference is that I actually learn stuff. The schedule isn't that much different and it's mostly self-studies so I decide my own schedule which depends on my assignments and if there are upcoming exams. But I don't go to a high prestigious school like MIT so probably a lot different there.
