Hi, Dye Hawley here, Dye the Safe Guy to talk about high security safes. But first a little background.
Before modern day safes, all they had was steel plate safes with a 1" steel door here and 1" of steel in the body, they were rated by Underwriters Laboratory TL-15.
Higher rated safes, TL-30, have a 1 1/2" steel plate in the door and 1" in the body.
About 50 years ago manufacturers came out with composite safes. Unlike steel plate safes we just saw, they also have a 1 or 2 hour fire rating.
So the new UL standards (Underwriters Laboratory standards) say that the composite safes have to be equivalent to 1" of steel in the door. As you can see this door is nearly 5" thick with a combination of composite material such as this and steel in the door on the outer and steel on the inner.
Composite aggregate is a special mix of concrete and other high tech materials including fiber glass and metal to stop a burglar attempt, but it also serves a dual purpose. It has anywhere from 3" to 4" of thickness of the concrete and fire retardant material.
The different between composite aggregate in a high security safe is this one is 50,000 PSI of density which is required by Underwriters Laboratory to meet the specification. Your every day burglar fire safe has much lighter less dense composite aggregate. Still good but not nearly as heavy duty as the high security composite aggregate.
Remember at the beginning of this video we showed you the steel plate safes with 1" to 1 1/2" steel in the door and 1" of steel in the body. The new composite safes now are equivalent to 1" or 1 1/2" using that composite aggregate material and steel and the 50,000 PSI, these newer composite safes are equivalent to the old steel plate safes.
High security composite burglar fire safes have a 1 to 2 hour fire rating.
Be sure to look for the TL-15 metal tab riveted inside the door of all high security burglar fire safes. You will also find the fire rating there as well.
Now an explanation of what TL means and TR means. TL means tool resistant. TR means torch resistant. If the label says TL only it is only tool resistant. If it says TLTR it is both tool and torch resistant. One common misconception is the 15 for the 15 minutes or the 30 for the 30 minutes means that a burglar can break into that safe in 15 or 30 minutes. Nothing could be further from the truth. The 15 means the UL safe crackers (and they are the best in the world) took 15 minutes of tool time on the safe. That means the tool was on the safe for 15 minutes. It could have taken them an hour or an hour and a half to break into the safe.
High Security Ratings and the content value guidelines*
U.L. TL-15 - up to $200,000
U.L. TL-30 - up to $375,000
U.L. TL-30x6 - up to $500,000
U.L. TRTL-30x6 $1,000,000 and up
*with monitored burglar alarm

I like my plate safes. Nobody is going to carry it off. The door is 1.5" thick with a 1/2" hardened steel anti drill plate that the lock mounts to. It also has a couple of relockers if someone tries to breach it.

These aren't like those pretty safes you see advertised at big box stores with the shiny pretty paint jobs . These actually keep your things you put in them safe .

Great video. First time I've even heard about TL/TR ... sure simplifies things.... better than listening to a salesman talk about features that may not matter.

One not-so-small point that should be mentioned in any discussion of high security safes is that the weight of the safe can be so extreme that it can literally crush a residential stair. Even if it's a straight shot down one stair into the basement, it can be thousands of dollars for a team of professional safe movers to block & tackle, electric wench and brace the stairs to get up or down stairs. Those cute automated heavy lift stair climbing hand trucks stop at 1500 lbs! And your floor joists may not like the weight of one or two tons over a period of years. I think I can try it at my house where the Nascor joists are supported by an epic 18.5x10" steel I/H beam, but it is probably going to be a good idea to seek advice from a real safe expert on your specific situation.

I use to work for a company that sold high end jewelry and we moved some safes around before a construction project. Talking safes the size of a 30 gun safe weighing almost 6k. But its about meeting guide lines and when 6 figure items that can be held in your hand are packed in one spot it has to be strong.

Great video thank you! On a TL30 with the composite is there still a steel plate thickness requirement or can it be very thin metal filled with the composite material ? I'd like to have the 1.5" steel plate door and 1" steel body plus the composite material, thanks

Do any of these ratings, even the TLTR rating, mean that a plasma cutter can be defeated by them? Or does torch mean acetylene and lesser cutting methods?

a UL-rated TXTL-60 will withstand an 8,000 F thermic lance for an hour. it's also resistant to TNT, but costs $34,000. source: ISM Super Diamond TXTL60

You'll end up going back and forth between the plasma cutter and the pneumatic chisel (jackhammer). Some of them have such a complicated structure, your best bet is a water cooled diamond tipped coring tool.

doubt they stop plasma cutters (cheap and portable these days). In and out in two minutes and your savings is GONE. they don't car much about how thick steel plate is. Only matters against bars and 1940s blade cutters. I've held off buying such a safe for ten yrs due to no one ever being able to help me out with this concern.

You watch too many movies. A real deal safe like a TL you aren't just zipping through in 2 mins. w a China cutter. If this was the case there would be a whole lot more robberies and whole lot more people becoming professional burglars.
@teller1290
@teller1290 Жыл бұрын
@@funkfarmer7125 Never saw a plasma cutter on TV. Just a well-intended question after seeing one on KZbin cut through a steel plate like butter. Seemed like a logical concern. I suspect they don't get used much due to most burglars being low-brow tweakers who never heard of such a tool. I was concerned about the burglar who might learn of quality safe in a home (via big mouthed contractor, home health nurse or aid, plumber, exterminator, guests, etc.) and decide to make a bit of a project of it; a burglar who might be smarter than your avg bear.

No, you can safely store 200k of valuables, per your insurance company valuation. In other words if you have a $200,000. Coin collection they're going to want it stored in a safe rated for 200k of protection.

Sure wish you would quit gutting the industand selling safes online for wholesale prices. Your putting the good guys out of work. I quote a safe for retail price and my customer finds your site with same safe at 40% reduced cost, and then expects me to service and install the safe you sold. You are the problem with today's non profit market.
@googlesucks7975
@googlesucks7975 Жыл бұрын
Maybe you're the problem with today's market? First off, they're not "your" customers, they're the market's customers; and if your prices were more competitive then I'm sure people would gladly purchase through you. If it's going to cost them and additional 40% for not having to wait 2 or 3 months for the safe to be built and shipped to them, then don't be surprised when people decide to make that wait if they're going to pay almost half as much as what you're charging. And by the way, if someone hires you to service and install a safe, who cares if they bought it somewhere else, they're still hiring you to service and install it, aren't they? Either accept what the market is telling you and make servicing and installation a bigger part of your operation or fade into irrelevance and bankruptcy holding on to your 40% fee for being nothing but a glorified middleman.
