Jay P., I finally gave in and purchased my Baja B4 after watching this video. I used it for the first time this weekend and it performed like a charm - and NO cables! Yay! I was on the beach in Toronto with a monoblock, just great stuff. Paired with a 80x100cm softbox, the light was dreamy. Thanks for the info.

I still have to use speedlights and variable ND-- and hope the subject doesn't plan on moving faster than 1/200 second, but that's alright. Thanks for all your video assistance to make all my pictures look good. Talking about Flash High Sync, this a good way to shot in DSLR above 1/4000 with flash. To shoot high speed 1/4000 or above, is not necessary Flash Slave Trigger Hot Shoe Sync Adapter. The only thing that you need is a flash with High Sync, Camera with flash sync speed option. First mount your flash on top of your camera, set it up to Manual or ETTL mode full power, enable the H sync. turn on the strobes or flashes synchronized to slave 1. Thats it.

You can also achieve the same effect-using an - ND1.2 - 4/f Stop Neutral Density Filter if you normally set your flash exposure to F/11 you would then set your aperture to F/2.8 when using a - 4/f Stop Neutral Density Filter. This gives you exactly the same exposure but significantly less depth of field.

Is there really a need for HS sync in this shoot? You can easily change ISO 320 at 1/500s to ISO 100 at 1/160s and keep the same f stop. The 5DIII he is using is fully capable of syncing at 1/160s. Am I missing something?
@TheSlantedLens9 жыл бұрын
aluzexp I used ISO 320 for this particular shoot because it was a little overcast the day of the shoot. If it had been a bright sunny day, I would have dropped my ISO to 100 but 1/160 would have been too bright for the background.

What's the downside to using a Variable ND filter instead of HSS? Obviously HSS will work with fast-paced action, where a VND filter will not, but for portraits this is not an issue.
@michaelayap17825 жыл бұрын
Using nd filters will degrade the quality of image because you are adding element in your lens it makes the background dark and so is the subject. So you still need flash when shooting portraits
@RichardBrownPhotography9 жыл бұрын
I just testing these and am finding you can't really use HSS above 1/4000th because of the falloff. This means that you are not going to be able to over power full sunlight in a situation you might end up in sadly. however the recycle time is much better than the off brand units I had purchased to test a couple months ago.

Besides possibly degrading image quality a little bit, what's the pros of using HSS compared to just using a ND filter to achieve the same result?
@gouravandgourav4 жыл бұрын
Such shot can be easily taken by normal TTL settings. If you are not darkening the background by exposing the subject i dont think HSS is required. With HSS you can have increased the shutter speed till 1/4000 to 1/8000 to get some better HSS shots.

A bit overly complicated in my mind. 1) With flash off, expose for the background. Ie. Make the background look how you want it to look 2) Turn flash on. Test shot. Now expose your subject using flash power 3) Done. Not sure what the whole thing about syncing aperture to flash power was about.
@TheSlantedLens Жыл бұрын
If you don't care what your aperture is then what you said is absolutely true. But if you are controlling your photography and you want a shallow depth of field you can only get it by using an ND filter or high speed sync in direct sunlight.

@beerbaron30037 жыл бұрын
Hopefully people will find the HSS explanation useful... but HSS wasn't even necessary here! The ISO was increased, just to put the shutter speed into HSS territory. If your settings were 1/500th, f4.5, ISO 320... then you could get the same exposure without going into HSS (1/200th, f4.5, ISO 125)

You should be able to find that in the specs of the camera online.
@ke4uyp6 жыл бұрын
At full power output the B1 and the B2 has a flash duration of 1/1000 of a second. So if you set your shutter speed on the camera to 1/2000 of a second or higher you do not need the option of high speed sync because the shutter speed is now twice as fast as the flash duration. You can use this option over high speed sync with any flash or speed light because At full power output all electronic flashes have a flash duration slower than the maximum shutter speed of any camera. This technique makes it possible for anyone who has even a inexpensive or old speed light the ability to achieve the same affect as high speed sync.
