I saw one in a private collection in New Zealand 30 years ago. I asked how the hell did he get one of these? He said funny story, he was at a gun show in the US and High Standard gave him one as a sample to take back to New Zealand for the NZ Police to review. The thing was he had nothing to do with the NZ Police Department apart from having a general Police issued firearms liecence for a citizen to own a rifle, which he showed them. At that time the liecence of the day had in large letters across the front "New Zealand Police" and HS assumed he was part of the NZ Police Department. He said he transported it back to New Zealand as carry-on hand luggage and was never stopped or asked about what was in the bag and High Standard never asked for it back. Lol

Great video, as usual, you keep my interest indeed. I was a cop back in the 70's, and I can assure you though that the Kel-light was the top of the line, the mag light came later. The kel light had the advantage of being solid aluminum, and could bust a skull wide open if need be. We had them in hand at every traffic stop, and when clearing buildings. Very comforting in hand, and they had a great light output as well, this before the ultra bright bulbs were invented. An 8 cell "D" kel light would last through an accident investigation on a dark highway, and would continue to serve the rest of the shift.

It doesn't seem like it's a flawed design. If the pin is the only problem then the problem might be the pins not being well-fitted.
@Skyliner04s9 жыл бұрын
+Shoes Either that, or the drillbit, that was used to drill the hole for the pin, was sharpend wrong. A drillbit, with one egde bigger than the other, drills holes too big. I find the thought, a faulty drillbit rendering this gun useless, very amusing. :)
@aserta9 жыл бұрын
+Skyliner04s It's not that. I think it's put backwards. Check that it has two holes on either side of the housing. Couple that with the serrations, (parallel to the axis of the pin at that) and you can assume that someone at some point swapped it backwards.
@TheInflicted9 жыл бұрын
+aserta Possibly. If the pin were only supposed to be knocked in one way you would think it would be marked. If it were me, I'd just give the pin a good whack with a hammer at its midpoint, to bend it slightly. That way it would fit snugly when tapped back into place. But yeah, this seems more like a manufacturing flaw than a design defect.
@webtoedman9 жыл бұрын
+TheInflicted If you look at the lifter arm, one side is higher than the other. If the pin was pushed through from the other side I am willing to bet that i) The serrated end would grip properly, and: ii) even if the pin moved sideways it would not interfere with the low side of the lifter arm. Seems a pity that nobody tried it that way, but if it wasn't Ian's gun, then perhaps he didn't want to to tear it apart.

As pointed out in the comments the Maglight came after the Kel light. In the late 60s and early 70s police officers had two choices on aluminum flashlights. The Kel light or the B light. The B light was sold by Bianchi and the Kel light was sold by Safariland. I was an officer during that time and I used the Kel light. The one on my High Standard Model 10B still works to this day.

@petesampson42737 жыл бұрын
I had a similar problem, a floating pin, with a Remington Model 1100 lightweight 20 gauge. It would work flawlessly with light field loads but when I stepped up to magnums for ducks and pheasants it would run into the same problem every time. The first shell would eject normally, the 2nd would drop in my lap (or on the ground or into the swamp) and the third would remain in the magazine. Manually racking the bolt would then feed the 3rd shell. So? I had a ergonomically challenged two shot bolt action shotgun if I loaded three shells. I went through that gun again and again and everything seemed normal but the problem would crop up whenever I used heavy loads. I took it to a gunsmith (who I later learned was an incompetent drunk) and he said something like "the gas port corroded so too much gas is going into the gas block" but that didn't make any sense because I had the same problem with two different barrels. By this time steel shot became mandatory so I bought a 12 gauge Browning BPS for duck hunting and started using a Ruger Redhawk for deer. One day shooting trap the loading gate on my 1100 stuck solid. While I was disassembling it I noticed that the hinge pin was all the way to one side. Ah-ha! Now everything made sense. What had been going on is that the heavier recoil of heavy loads would provide enough shock to move the hinge pin and it would lift the loading gate before the magazine released the shell and prevent it from dropping as well. I centered the pin and gave it a couple whacks on each side with a punch and, low and behold, that gun has functioned flawlessly with every kind of ammo I run through it ever since. I seldom shoot the old 1100 myself because I have since acquired a 20 gauge Beretta Silver Snipe over-under that is far superior for trap and grouse but, since the old 1100 throws slugs very well, it's the gun that I loan out to nephews, nieces, and my friends' children if they need a deer gun. I've lost count but the old girl has taken between 15 and 20 dear over the years and all but one of them was a one shot kill so, in hindsight, the ability of taking a rapid second shot hasn't really come into play! But? No one has had a failure to feed the second shot, if needed, either. What's the moral of the story? If your semiauto has feed problems the first thing to check is if any of the pins are floating around. BTW. My best friend's nephew used the 1100 to take a really, really, nice white-tail a couple weeks ago. It has an above average 12 point rack and weighed out at 232 pounds. It's a very nice deer by any standard and he dropped it with a single slug through the spine, just in front of the shoulders, at 63 paces. A "perfect shot" if you will. He, understandably, got excited when he saw it start twitching and jerking and fired 3 more shots in its general direction but all of them missed and it didn't move more than 6 feet. It was basically dead before it hit the ground. And, best of all, it's a young deer so the tenderloins and steaks have been very tasty and he contributed almost as much sausage meat as the rest of us combined. Good job, Tyler!

Very informative as always. However, I feel I should correct you on one point. The Kel-Lite was very much NOT "a knock-off Maglite." Kel-Lite was in fact the original heavy-duty law enforcement flashlight and originally was not available to the public. I'm not sure when they began to be produced, but by the late 1970s, the Kel-Lite was the default flashlight for virtually all law enforcement officers. I still have the one I bought at J. B. Battle Uniform Co. in Oklahoma City in 1981. Mag-Lite was a relative late-comer to the "indestructible flashlight" business, but arguably developed a more user-friendly product (primarily with regard to their sealed switches which are less susceptible to damage) and thus has captured most of the market. Kel-Lite is still in business, however, and still enjoys sigificant popularity among first responders.

Bought a pair of them way back in the 90's and A & B (caused they looked cool and I'd seen the B model in a police station in the 70's) have never shot the A and took awhile to get the flashlight to work on it, as for the B I've shot it quite a bit with everything from light bird loads all the way to heavy buck & slugs - never had an issue with it feeding/shooting & at 50 yards can still hit beer cans with the slugs - but I have heard similar shooting stories from others so maybe I just got lucky!

Way back in 1976, when I started out in Law Enforcement, the HS 10B was being passed off as the replacement for the pump action shotgun....The only one I ever encountered had the exact same problem(s) you had with the one seen in this video. We tried every brand of "high powered", high brass ammo then available and failure to feeds were VERY common. So my department, at the time, passed on it and stuck with the 870s then in inventory. I don't know how many were actually manufactured with Law Enforcement in mind but I do know that while I was in the Army in the 1980s it's twin was tested by the Army to replace the pump action "combat shotgun"....That didn't go anywhere either.....I'm kind of surprised anybody ever bought one thus giving you the chance to test the example in your video. With some tighter specs it might actually have been of some use other than as a door stop, but as it was, it was a failure.

I got screwed out of a Model 10 at a gun show in Alaska back in 79'. The guy wanted $200 for it. I had a $150 on me, asked him to hold it until I got back from the credit union on post (a 20 minute turn around drive) with the other $50 bucks. Got back in just under 20 minutes, went up to the table and the guy says "sorry, I sold it to this other guy". I was pissed. This is an older video (2015) and after seeing the wear marks on the weapon you can tell it was shot quite a bit. The maintenance on the shotgun was not kept up, hence the thru pin losing grip and not being replaced. Normal upkeep on this gun would have provided a better showing than what Ian experienced. I have had some firearms that didn't work or even cycle initially for shit until a little love was shown them. Re: the offending pin: It looks like you could get a pin machined to correct the problem (head machined for an interference fit). If a fair # of police agencies adopted them, & they were made from 1967-1977, this says something - either HS cut a heck of a deal or put a ton of $ into advertising them in Po-lice journals of the day. I see lots of high quality manufactured components in this shotgun. Thinking about it, the plastic bits, even if they are from 1977, are high quality. Thanks so much for posting. :-)

Cool memorabilia for me. Along with an interesting back story. A block of material to prevent the misalignment of the trigger assembly would present an easy and permanent fix I'd suggest. The bull pup design certainly makes it a very short weapon, easier to weild for the police. One of these in fine fettle would seem preferable to a full size shot gun.

Put a dab of blue locktite on the end of the pin should keep it from walking out, for a little while at least.

Great video. Quick clarification- Kel-Lites are not off-brand Mag-Lites. Tony Maglica actually worked for them before he started Mag-Lite. They're excellent flashlights if you can come by one for the right price.

Get your hands on an 11-48! Or even better and less known, the Mohawk 48. The Mohawk 48 is my favorite shotgun I've ever owned

It seems pinning that problem pin would fix the problem. But that is a delicate operation for a gunsmith. Custom work like that may be rare and expensive.

If you want a semi-auto, or auto shotgun in bullpup configuration then AK-style Saiga or Vepr with bullpup conversion kit is probably the most reliable one to get. Just make sure you feed ammunition that develops enough gas pressure to cycle the gas-operated system, remember, this is basically an AK. Another note is from my own personal experience, paper or plastic shells tend to get dented on mag lips and jam when chambering. Steel or brass cased shells work better with mags - Russian factory ammo I used was steel cased, and performed optimally and resolved all the cycling issues I had with cheap store bought ammo.

Take some Solder or brazing and just mildly braise the tip of that pen inside flush with the metal so that it doesn’t cause a problem anymore. To disassemble, you could just cut the pin and replace it.

High Standard made pretty good shotguns. I had a chance years ago to pick up one of these, but I didn't have the money. I do have a High Standard k1200, very well made.

Like so many things, an interesting and valid concept, poorly executed. Something like this would be great for urban areas and inside buildings, where a compact weapon is a great aid. The mounting of a light was visionary for the time. Many is the time i left my 870 in the car on building searches because of its length and bulk. I would rather have had it with me. If these had been reliable, we might have seen LE switching to semiauto shotguns sooner (many still have not). Some agencies only use the shotgun for less lethal and special purpose ammo, which is a mistake. I carried an 870 and my Bushmaster in a side by side electro lock, and i pulled out the 870 about as much as i did the AR. The other guys were glad to see the 870, without exception. Never had to fire it thankfully, but it was a confidence booster.

I have a pump action "Flight King" which IS the Flight King, aka Model 200 (or Sears and Roebuck/JCHiggins Model 20). The semi auto action is not actually a Flight King. The pump action and semi-auto DO share many of the same componants. The receiver is actually the same when going into machining. With 1 or 2 additional. Things done for the semi-auto.

Back in '73 Argentina bought a few of those guns for the presidential bodyguards. They had the one with the incorporated flashlight. I think it took them about 6 months to get rid of them. They were never able to make them work.

Kel-Lite was not an "off-brand Maglite." Kel-lite was the original all-aluminum flashlight. Maglite was originally a cheaper knock-off of Kel-lite. So you got that EXACTLY backwards. I own one of these. From the rattling sound yours makes, mine's in better condition, but mine showed little signs of wear when I got it and I haven't put more than a hundred rounds through it (no jams during that hundred, though). Mine cycled quite reliably with 00 buck so long as you don't use low-brass shells (the extractor will sometimes mangle them), but since nobody I know of sells low-brass anymore that's hardly a problem (several of the early autoloaders would tear up low-brass shells during extraction).

The 10B I looked today at had the mounting bracket attached to the side of the light, and the light was much shorter in length. It was still in the factory box, in almost unfired condition.

+gunfuego It's neat on paper but as Ian explained not long ago in his Q&A video, the gun had a million small tiny parts, like a pocket watch, and the ammo had a ton of problems. If you had a misfire due to a cracked round, you'd have a caseless bullet stuck in the gun, with no way to manually eject it without disassembly. It's a neat sci-fi gun but it was just never gonna be.

I own one, I've put a few hundred rounds through it, definitely much more reliable than the one in the video. I wouldn't trust my life with it, but it doesn't jam or catch up nearly as much as that one.
